$1000 - 2009 Tomos moped conversion - SOLD

Post by Jordan325ic » Feb 24 2021 11:01am

Located in Austin, Texas. $1000 obo.

Selling my converted 2009 Tomos Sprint scooter. I built it for bike-lane commuting and a discrete form factor, not for speed. When I lived in the city it was amazing. I could jump on and ride around the city at any time of day, often arriving at half the time it would have taken in a car or regular motorcycle by avoiding traffic. Where I am now the nearest grocery store is a 24 mile round trip down a 60mph road, so sadly the moped has no use here. I built it to be as simple, bulletproof and reliable as possible. It has no issues, I hate to see it taking up space, maybe somebody here can use it.

Specs:
- Golden-Motor 1000W Magic Pie motor, external controller. 20" cast wheel running 16" motorcycle tires.
-48v17.5ah (840Wh) Samsung 35e cells w/ BMS 30A continuous, 50A peak discharge custom sized, by UPP
- Switchable DC/DC converter running LED headlight, tail-light and brake-light, speedo backlight.

I did a full, real-world test when the motorcycle was completed:
With a 200lbs, 6'5 rider: 20mph cruising speed on flat, 22 mile max real-world range.

With a 140lbs, 5' 7" rider
25mph cruising speed on flat, 25 mile max real-world range.

Assuming some battery degradation since new (~300 miles, 1 year) I would guess it has a safe 18 miles of range for a heavy rider. The gas-tank frame was welded to fit an access door with external support brackets. The charge port is mounted under a cover in the gas cap.

Other features
:-OEM backlit mechanical speedo/odo, Voltmeter mounted into headlight bucket.
-Cruise, regen, reverse, horn.
-160mm mechanical rear disc brake conversion (brackets welded on.
-"Electric Bicycle" plate on headtube.
-Hidden ON/OFF switch mounted under seat (like an ebike, it should be locked up when parked in public)

Included:
USB programming cable
Charger
Bike lock
Some original parts if desired (original rear wheel, etc...)

Videos:
Overview: https://youtu.be/EUtiOFQqViM
In motion: https://youtu.be/jZ5Rn-gIeUY

I spoke with the DMV pre-pandemic, and checked the VIN. The moped has never been registered, and was ineligible for plates/insurance/etc.

$1000 obo.

Before this excellent build fades away, do you have any pics if the build process? Especially the battery build and controller mounting?

Sadly not, I didn't document the build process.

The controller plate was cut out of aluminum sheet. The plate has two tabs at the rear that slot into the seat support/latch bracket. There is a single screw in the front which screws into the original (still functioning) storage box mounting plate. So removal is just one screw and then slide forward. The controller had two mounting holes, which are held to the plate itself via long 5mm bolts. The edges are trimmed with some sort of door seal trim from amazon.

The battery build was as follows.
48v 17.5ah Samsung 35e cells, 30A BMS, cannon charge port, XT60 discharge port (dimensions not to exceed 300mmx90mmx80mm). +2A cannon charger (USA) +matching XT60 connector. 30A continuous, 50A max.
UnitPackPower on Aliexpress shipped $368

The battery is very snug, it does not move around at all when the door is secured. I used yoga mat material to cushion the battery all the way around, There is a plastic 'end cap' protecting the end of the battery from some metal internal supports at the point where the frame bends horizontal. The bolts holding the battery door brackets were welded to the frame.

Any way to get some good pics of the battery outside of the scooter, and a pic of the controller where its mounted?

I know it may already be delivered, but there are not enough pics of examples of this...
