I have bought many Makita packs from Doc Bass. I believe he sells them for $10 USD per pack. I have found that they usually have ten good cells and the BMS is gone, or there would be one bad cell, with nine good ones. So basically they are $1 USD per cell

$1 per cell eh? I'm a bit surprised, but I appreciate the info. I can't bid on the cells unless I have that info.

A123 used to be fairly popular around here. I guess they aren't the darling they once were. What type of cells are hot right now?

I read some posts about samsung cells being popular to my recall...

Makita packs are Sony Konion cells. The a123 cells are still good just not as light as lithium. I ripped many Dewalt 36 volts packs apart over the years.....many! I also ran the a123's for years.

The a123 cells are 26650 cells though.....not 18650. At least the ones that came from the Dewalt packs.

Yes, Makita are Konions, I've opened a few myself.

I think maybe his point is that a high performance cell such as either A123 or Konion has a value of about $1/cell?

I've done a little more research on used 18650's based on items sold in this subforum. Packs made from Tesla and similar high capacity brand-name cells are remarkably similar about $3-4/cell, while A123 about $1-2/cell, and laptop lithium $0.50/cell or less.

Research:

Used Tesla $1250/module,
High capacity 3.5ah cells
(About 400 cells)
= $3/cell.

Used Tesla
Ecyclist qty 100, wrapped
=3.71

Luna pack on here, asking $730 for 55 cells (unsold)
High capacity 3.5ah cells
= $15/cell

Crashed A123 pack 48v 20ah = 260 cells for $300
Mid capacity, low-C 1.1ah cells
=$0.50/cell

Laptop cells 228 for $100
Low capacity, very low C-rate
= $0.48/cell

The cells I'm looking to buy come in sealed Dewalt 18v packs, so I know they're legit. They are 18650 size, that's for sure.

I have taken apart the big 36v packs and they have the larger 26650 size cells. In what size of packs did you find the 26650's?

Just make sure the 18v packs aren't the old NiCd ones. ;)

I think the pack number on the A123 ones is 9180. I don't recall the one on the NiCd packs (I don't have mine anymore but I had a big boxful of 18v Dewalt NiCds before the housefire).

I think these cells have a capacity of around 900mah to 1100mah, depending on rate of D.

I wouldn't pay much for them to be honest.

The only reason I would have any interest in them is because I already have two large capacity 36v {12s} builds made from old 18650 cells which might need repairing over time.

PM me if you go ahead with your purchase, but with due regard to the recent developments on the 18650 scene, $1 per cell would be about as far as I would go.

Thanks.

Capacity 1.1 ah (tested)
Nominal Voltage 3.3v (tested)
Continuous 30a (tested)
10s burst 65a. (I have not seen this one on the test bench though, never tried it that high.)

How much would shipping cost to UK? What's the typical capacity (wh) in the cell you got?

PM me an address and a number of cells to quote shipping.

Typical specs from my testing of ~300 cells are:
Voltage = 3.6v
Capacity = 0.95 - 1.05 Ah

Watt Hours = 3.6 x 0.95
=3.42 Wh

Factory specs are nominal 3.6v 1.1 Ah
Wh = 1.1 x 3.6
= 3.96

Ordered 100 cells, got UPS tracking already. Will use them to stiffen saggy LiFePO4 inverter battery, those cells are power beasts!
Also thinking to assemble a starter battery for my car to replace lead acid one.
Shipping cost was surprisingly low.
All around katou is nice and easy to deal with seller.

Finally received a pack of 50 pairs (100 cells) on Tuesday, unfortunately my courier screwed up and took more time to deliver then actual shipping from Katou.

Packaging:
Very nice, 2 cardboard boxes with cushioning material in between.
Inner box with empty spaces filled so cells stay fixed.
Cells (I ordered unsorted As-is cells):
Whoever took apart used tool packs (I did, dozens of Makita packs with US18650VTC3 cells) knows, there are cosmetically 3 types of cells you get out 1)good 2)regular and 3)trash, before you even take some measurements.

Those I received are pairs already cut out of larger packs.
In my case, I got only type 1 and 2, cosmetically in good or regular shape, no really bad looking cells I would throw away if they work, 6 with slightly crashed (pressed in) positive button.

Voltage (Again, those where As-is, unsorted):
24pairs (48cells) came >3.3V
10pairs (20cells) came >3.2-3.3V<
1 pair(2 cell) 2.3V
1 pair(2 cell) 1.1V
14pairs(28cells) <0.5V (almost all around 0.331V, may be some common BMS failure mode related)

Tests:
I charged all to 3.6V between Tuesday (14pairs <0.5V) and Wednesday all the rest.
11 pairs from Tuesday batch, in 24h settled at 3.34-3.39V, 3 pairs fell below 3.3V and I cut the pairs open where 1 cell of each pair kept self discharging.

By now, can confirm 3 self discharging cells, out of 100.

Next to come:
1)Watch on self discharge.
2)Settle voltage on 3.9V overcharged cells, I have couple from Wednesday batch.
3)Will try to take random measurements of DCR with several fixed points in current flow and voltmeter approach.
4)Capacity tests are compromised ATM, my last charger/discharger gave up on discharge mode, it throws control error message.

Can someone recommend reliable capacity tester/charger/discharger/cycler, in lower budget territory?

I probably screwed up with charging the Tuesday batch because was able to push almost 0.1Ah more in every cell using Wednesday procedure. They where different because of initial SOC.
Wednesday batch including overcharged to 3.9V cells levelled in 3.4-3.5V range, which is the right number to expect in LiFePO world.

BTW, I was full of crappy ECO8s and ordered Turnigy Reaktor 1000W 30A, which looks like a copy of good, old and discontinued iCharger3010B I did like a lot, before overvolting. It will take 1-2 weeks to return testing.

Hey! Glad they got there ok.

I have been using a CBA III for my discharge testing. I think I will be changing my procedure very soon. Thanks for the suggestion re: the turnigy unit, I'll be checking that out. I'm due for an upgrade.

I expect about 80% good from unsorted cells from Dewalt packs, so your result of 14 pairs lower than 0.5v is higher than I like. If you choose to purchase any more, I will throw in some extra to bring your numbers up.
