36V to 12V 2-3A converters are cheap ~ $2,
Converting to 5V usb power is becoming increasingly advisable!
4. eZip special - convert 2nd RMB pack as Lithium 3s pack for large 12V supply for:
air pump
lighting
power inverter

Bonus! - rig 12-11.1V) pack with its neg to pos of 1st 24-25.9V pack.
Battery switch position 1 will supply normal 7s 25.9V (normal 20mph - 485w).
Switch position 2 will run batteries in series 10s 37V (TURBO 25mph+ - 695w)
(requires 24-36V capable controller)

I've started in a similar direction but I'm tapping ~12V from 4 of the LiFePO4 cells in my battery pack for low load items (alarm).
 
Anybody seen/used this one? Amp hour / Watt meter with Wireless display.

Tapping Into you packs would create an imbalance issue. You are better off getting a DC/DC converter or building a separate pack.
 
It' a very low discharge so I very much doubt there'll be any issues. I do have separate batteries for heavier draw items such as the Cree lights.

I was all set to order one and give it a try.... However, I decided to first find and download a manual for it. Glad I did because there is a requirement to also provide power (different voltage) to the display unit in addition to the shunt/circuit board. NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE in the seller's post.

The display requires a separate 5v to 24v supply. So to use we would have to get a DC - DC step-down converter or a separate and smaller battery from the main ebike battery.

Not something I want to deal with.

I'm planning to give this one a try. In the following configuration:

It is self powered (10v to 90v) and can measure anything up to 120v and 200a.
 
I just spotted a meter on Hobbyking, it measures voltage to 60V, 100A, and a few other things [Turnigy 7 in 1 Mega Meter - Battery Checker/Watt Meter/Servo Tester/Optical Tacho/Temp Gauge/Thrust Calc/Battery Internal Resistance Checker]. What caught my eye was the Internal resistance option. under $40 but the full specs would need to be checked to make sure it'll be ok with the extra power of ebike batteries.

MB requires 350w to sustain 20mph ... 1000w to sustain 30mph. Upright trike requiring notably more w.
Dual motors @ 36V should be ~30mph capable ... but suicidal on a high trike?

Add #415 chain, thumb throttle and mounting hardware ... might cost ≤ $100! - Batteries not included
 
Interesting--it looks like that motor can pull the contacts apart as well as push them together, though I dunno if it would have enough force to pull apart welded contacts, with just the plastic pull/push bracket.

Stripped wire sheathing from another and modded to 3 length outputs:
cut one to 1 foot;
one at oem 6 feet;
spliced one to 11 feet.

i solder and heatshrink all wire connections.
¼" long heatshrink rings at intervals keeps wire pairs nicely organized.

Designed for years of continuous use.
Seems ... reasonably weather resistant

Its all presealed, claims to be Dust-proof/ Waterproof and appears so and its pretty small, (photo is pretty close up) and it has managed to handle my battery packs of 36v and 44v, I have manged to bbq cheaper step down DC converters that claimed to handle these voltages but didn't. If you think you need one of these I demand you buy one and enjoy it (but I have absolutely no gain from you getting one)
Just an update on this device, I decided to solder one some wires onto my back LED light and feed it into the DC-DC 5volt stepdown module as using batteries was getting unreliable on it.
While testing I decided to test the milliamps draw of this device while plugged into my v48 battery pack, the microamps DVM is connected directly to the battery pack then fed into the DC-DC stepdown module.
With the back LED off the whole thing including the dc-dc stepdown module draws about 0.38ma or 378microamps (μA) according to the meter.
With the back light LED switched on the whole thing was drawing about 1.5ma or 1500 micro-amps according to the meter.
Click on the sides of the google photos to see various outputs the meter shows when the bike light is on or off (also note that I flick between uA and mA modes on the meter)
Also note that I placed an extra led on the bike light battery connectors input to drop voltage input and cause it to draw less power while in operation.
