Regarding the sea otter, it says "Tuned eMTBs are excluded from the competition." I wonder what a tuned eMTB is?

While I suppose they could have all sorts of ideas of what they'll lump into "tuned" for the sake of banning it, one thing that is known as a tuned eMTB is where you replace the speed limiting dongle with one that'll let it go twice as fast.

The sea otter race director's response to my question regarding what a tuned eMTB is:

"Basically a moped"

So that clears that up.

Oh, that's brilliant. A motor and pedals makes it a moped. But I went ahead and did some reading:

PLEASE NOTE: Any pedal assist eBike with unlimited pedal assistance (i.e. motor assists at speeds above 20 mph) is deemed to be a moped or motorbike, and is therefore not allowed to participate in the eMTB race.

Only eMTBs with supportive pedal power (pedal assist) to a maximum of 20 mph and a maximum output of 350 watts are allowed in this race.

As the electric-assist bikes have become more popular, concerns have arisen over trail access. Moab, Utah’s BLM office banned the bikes on non-motorized trails in 2014.

They obviously need good ole' Safe there to straighten them out.

Pedego Electric Bikes will move its headquarters to Fountain Valley on Saturday and attempt to set a world record for the most number of electric bicycle riders in a parade.
The eight-year-old company, which previously had its headquarters in Irvine, will be moving to a space nearly three times larger at 11310 Slater Avenue.
The new 39,000-square-foot building will have a showroom where people can view and test out the products, though they are not sold on site. The bikes are sold at more than 80 Pedego stores nationwide, including one in Huntington Beach at 301 Fifth Street, and other bicycle shops.
The bikes are powered by rechargeable batteries and motors tucked away in the rear hubs.
"With an electric bike, someone can peddle as much as they want or as little as they want," said co-founder and CEO Don DiCostanzo, adding the bikes can go anywhere from 25 to 100 miles with the motor. "You wouldn't know it was motorized when you're riding it."

At 2 p.m. Saturday, the company plans to host a parade down the bike path to set a record for the most electric bikes ever in a parade.
With no standard set yet, Guinness World Records has recommended the minimum of 250 people, but DiCostanzo is hopeful that about 500 people will participate.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own electric bicycles, even if they are not Pedego branded.
DiCostanzo said electric bikes allow people to go farther and ride for a longer time because it overcomes the two biggest obstacles of riding bikes — wind and hills.
"Imagine you're riding a bike and someone is giving you a gentle push if you're going up a hill," he said. "That's what our bikes are like. Anyone can enjoy them. We're not really in the bicycle business. We're in the business of fun."
