Its a little known fact that you can do that, I dont think Fido is anything special in regards to this type of plan. Their customer service is regular 9-5 Eastern Time Zone, Nigerians usually answer with a North American name like Bill or Bob or Sue.

Under "By the minute" is what I term....The "Let it slide" Plan.
Says right there unlimited incoming text. Which is good!
No monthly fee, except for the $0.75 emergency fee.

Its a free plan, its a pay per use plan. So they want to snag you into $0.40/min talk and $0.30/outgoing text.
I use these guys a lot, but tend to switch the plan over to Bell network Virgin Mobile. Fido has good phone numbers depending on the geographical address you put in.

I am wondering if they charge the $ 0.30 outgoing text wheb the gps device send to you to give information on the location, speed ,etc, on your phone message text.
 
That is the issue at hand, the lowest price I have seen is $15/month and that is expensive for a GPS text message sender. Maybe a high Gigahertz transmitter is whats needed in the GPS unit, and a mini FOB to receive the signal. Those seem to be about 1200ft or more with signal gain technology. Not counting concret or brick buildings.

Wireless USB Dongle configured to constantly be searching for open Wi-Fi networks. Once connected to the internet, notify the owner / operator of the E-Bike the GPS coordinates, Battery Statistics and Cycle Analyst data.

As with most of these (over)hyped tracking solutions, this uses a peer to peer network which relies upon others to also have the app installed.

IMO, the only tracking solutions that can be relied upon use the GSM comms network.

I needed to buy a $5 prepay SIM card and top it up with credit to send me SMS texts. it sends me a txt with a link to google maps showing me the location when I send it an SMS in the required format... the instructions are chinglish. It is a bit obvious for someone looking but there is also a power off alarm - sends me a text when the power goes off ... must be enough capacitance to fire off a dying txt. So if it is ripped off I get a txt.
There is also a cool web-site that tracks the device in real time

This is a very interesting thread and very informative too. Like many others, I'm wanting some sort of tracking, especially one that contacts me if my bike is being disturbed. It would be nice to shop or eat without thinking about the bike.

For now, I'm using a 10mm Security Maxx chain and Abus 34/55 lock when on a ride and an Abloy 367 lock when at home. Second lock is a Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit mini U lock. Next step is a Kryptonite New York Noose for parking the bike at home, it has a 12mm chain, probably the biggest size chain size for actual carry. Also, the bikes battery goes with me, when the bike is parked, that will continue even if I get a tracking / remote alarm system.

Our son had both his race motorcycles stolen a few months ago. He found them through social media, and got them back. He provided Houston PD with all the information they needed for arrest, indictment, prosecution and conviction. HPD did nothing except ping pong him between HPD offices. HPD did nothing, they were of no value at all, zero value. Law enforcement can not be depended on to recover stolen items. If you have had a LE agency help, you have been lucky.

Since the bike has a battery, why not use the bike battery to power a normal GPS and you don't even need to hide it--just connect the device without label to the battery--the theft will think this is a part of the ebike... @phild, why do you use a DC-DC converter? The device seems supports 10-75VDC wide band voltage input, but I have no experience with this.

As pointed out above, the ANKR GPS tag looks interesting. But it seems the sale has ended (see https://www.touchofmodern.com/i/WYUQ8CAC for the promotion page). So, $25.

Thinking is to install... somewhere on trike frame. (Watts better than deterring theft? Catching a thief. Hehe) Anyway, it'd take many months before equaling the cost of any lock, chain, wattEVer. `Been sorta getting used to/liking not having to carry any lock or find somewhere (not always handy) to lock up to. Having to carry a key around... etc.

Your son's story is typical. The hidden-from-the-naive "game" is that the victims are suppossed to collect insurance money, then buy another bike/motorcycle/car etc. The police 'think' that the victims should be happy, now that the victims got a brand new model, and the victim got rid of the old stuff.

What you've posted is the same as a "wireless luggage alarm" that buzzes the receiver when the luggage is moved out of the transmitter's range.

BTW, nice seatpost! Had two e'cycles with those suspension seatposts, stolen. Btw, the company that makes that had (has?) a virtual monopoly and at one time managed to get offshore, cheaper, clones blocked at the port, by their lawyers. That compnay also bought out their only North American competitor at one time.

What is the monthly subscription cost? Don't you have to get a full-coverage wireless company at $35/month?

My uncle recently bought a very flexible home alarm with enough components and programmability to cover bikes, garage, bike lockup, etc. It's the "Fuers G18 GSM SMS LCD Wireless Home House Burglar Alarm System Kit Solar Siren" from Amazon.ca

N.B. Amazon censors reviews, surf for "Amazon censorship like Big Brother". Most of Amazon reviews are "paid for" by professional reviewers who get product free, or at a discount.

Anyway this "Fuers G18 GSM SMS LCD Wireless Home House Burglar Alarm System Kit Solar Siren" system was $125. Now, Amazon has jacked up the price to $267.

This is what my uncle stated (his review) of this Fuers G18 GSM SMS LCD Wireless Home House Burglar Alarm System Kit Solar Siren:

SUMMARY: This system is awesome value for the price of $125, but it took me two weeks to program the settings, and to finally get the solar siren working. The user manual is missing some important "keystrokes" for setting parameters. I like solving "puzzles", so I persisted in making it work, rather than returning it. Spent more than 10 hours total in programming the system.

BREAKDOWN:

There is a lot of "hardware" for the $125 price, but customs fees was another $22 on top. Still, this system is probably worth $350 if it was easier to set up. A video clip would have been more useful for this particular system.

This hardware, generally, is sold under 3 brands, or more, with different controllers and sirens. This particular system is actually the solar siren (which is a stand-alone alarm already) and the security system. Confusion results from having two manuals, both of which are needed to understand how to use the solar siren, in particular.

PRO's:
- Made up of very high-quality plastic. Includes batteries.
- In two weeks of use, has not made any false alarms.
- There is sufficient "hardware" and an internal "battery backup" to protect an average Canadian home.
- The solar siren has a low-energy ussage warning blink-light to warn potential intruders.
- The solar siren has internal protection against tampering, disabling, or removal. (I took it all apart) Designed by a genius, probably. Cannot be modified without setting off an internal alarm (constant blue light.) The circuit board has 2 resistor-wires in case there is too much solar power -- that's brillant.
- The controller is made of very, very high quality.

CON'S:

- Solar siren not suitable, if no sun for a week.

UPDATE: One of the remotes is no longer registering on the controller.

 
If i lived in a dense city, where would be thieves would be taking and using my bike within a few miles, i would get a crowd powered (or whatever it's called) device. I would probably use it as a back up while helping to launch it's viability. But i live in the mountains and work and sometimes ride around a city nearby. If some one stole my bike from the coffee shop they would likely throw it in the back of a pick up and be off dozens of miles away in some back country area never to be seen again. And going after some redneck who stole my bike and brought it back to their place... well.. :roll: I wouldn't risk getting shot to get my bike back after it's stolen..

For me, it has to be prevention and deterrence. I maybe will get a motion/movement activated system, 110dB thereabouts. And i like the kryptonite locks. I'll replace my substandard U-Lock or supplement it with a heavy chain lock. I think making the bike look (and be) way more work than it's worth is the best deterrence. So the U-lock holding it (hopefully) to a bike rack or street sign, and the chain going through both wheels. At quick glance a would be thief can tell it wouldn't be worth the effort to even try.

Worked for me for 3 years in Savannah GA. Bike theft capitol of the USA (Not a real fact but my personal exp.)
