Interesting new gear box for bikes, gets rid of the Front Derailleur , and Rear Cog Set and Derailleur .

Connect the PInion front Chain ring with a small and light weight motor with a Belt or Chain just like the cyclone motors , to make a excellent mid drive .

looks great however I looked into bikes with this in the UK and the one sold custom in Sheffield is £3000 so not for the masses. :(
 
I see it more in combination with a (huge) motor in the rear wheel. You only need to mount one sprocket and if you want to add your pedal power at 70km/h this should be possible, too.
 
A youtube.com review I saw on it did say it is expensive, like all new technology, I and many others will be waiting for others to start making them and the prices to come down.

And the reviewers also stated that you can not shift under load, among other things, Looks like this technology would best suited to a small mid drive motor.

Yes, it is VERY expensive.

It's a niche product, engineered and made in Germany. you either pay or look elsewhere...

shifting under load is not ideal with ANY drive train (maybe except Nuvinci), so t is bets to use a motor drive that does not put power on your drive train, I suggest a rear wheel motor :)

If you have a mid drive better use a Rohloff speed hub, also an expensive made in Germany product, but significantly cheaper than a Pinion drive. And it will withstand the extra load from a reasonable powerful mid drive motor.

...i will asume that was a joking comment.....Or you completely do not understand why a mid drive is used ?
 
It should work the same as with any other crank assy.....simply adding power to the crank input
But, if you are suggesting the Pinion system is not strong or durable enough to handle 500W - 1000W peak power,....
...then i would suggest it is going to have problems even without a Edrive.
 
The Pinion freewheels at the front chainring. It can be configured with a 104mm spider and 2 front chainrings (one taking input from a mid-drive and the other to carry the chain to the rear wheel). The mid-drive would need a freewheel at its motor drive reduction shaft, otherwise pedal power will back drive the motor.

So using a mid-drive motor only, the two front chainrings spin together (but the cranks don't) and the main chain drives the rear wheel. No power goes through the Pinion, so you won't get any mechanical advantage from the transmission. But there's also no torque limit or risk of damaging the expensive Pinion drive either.

Pedaling will back-drive the middrive chain which will add a little resistance.

The rear wheel will of course coast on its own freewheel.

How do you think a mid drive should work with a Pinion?

Tried one on an Azub TiFly, shifting was impressive, but like the IGH's with less pedal pressure than the average low grade derailleur.

250nM torque rated so its stout. They use main & countershaft with stout gears. Other IGH's use planetaries only.
