Razor E-300 Hoverboard motors 350w ESC with Regen

Hi, New member here from Essex UK.
I like to make stuff and learn along the way, heavily into RC, Cars, Drones, Boats.
Recently learning about re-winding brushless motors.

heres my little build using a 350w Hoverboard motor, drilled out one side and tapped to fit scooter, using a £12 bike ESC from chinabay and Hobbywing batteries 5200mAh 1p12s. only pulling 16a max so batteries and BMS are happy.

I did fit a second hub and ESC to front to get 2wd, but BMS wasnt happy below 50% battery, was probably pulling above 30A and is only rated 20A i think before BMS kicks in.
But the pick up was lovely! and the regen brake was quite good!

Next project is rewinding my spare hoverboard motor with thicker copper to hopefully handle more power... thats where im at so far, so any advice would be great!

original windings were 5x0.35mm strands about 15 turns i think AaABbBCcC...im wondering about 2x.0.9mm about 10T for some speed.

I was going to go the lipo bms route but after considering the main fail point on chineese ebike battery's is the bms going bad and draining a cell down over time I thought I run naked but monitor voltage of pack and cells as well as watthour so I can build an accurate picture of charge state.

With 18650 a bad bms creates a bit of heat as the battery depletes but no major fire unless there's high discharge parralled cells but with lipo if the bms keeps on draining them they will get hot and catch fire the larger ah cells can really get a barbacue going so make sure the bms is good quality stuff.

Nice build though it looks awesome nice and clean, i bet it weighs very little and with the regen I suppose it can cover a fair distance, With that bms attached keep the battery separate in the corner of the shed isolated from anything to save burning the ride out and anything next to it.

Scrap the cheap bms get it 2wd and run a shunt with volt amp meter display with rc battery alarms on the balance wires and charge with a server psu and dc rc charger ?

There's a decent display from China cheap as chips with a shunt

Could you share which speed controller you used to hook it up?

For some off reason, my hoverboard wheels have 6 connectors on the hall wire harness... not sure what the white one is for...

Do a resistance reading of the white to ground it may be a thermistor , the hover board motors seem to like around 500watt any more and it's going to be short burst of speed only, I don't think they have much area in the core to heat soak the power spikes or if it's alu or steel, so keep it fairly low 500w to 1000watt max.
 
I know the motors work, I can run them off of an RC speed controller with as little as a 3S lipo (although not fast!).

I assume it is a thermistor, or some other type of temp probe. I would image the wheels will work just fine by just connecting the regular 5 hall wires.

I'd love to know what ESC the OP is using.
 
I am following your lead, using a razor e 100. The frame on this scooter is too small to put a larger motor in but a hoverboard wheel fits just fine.

I drilled the side with an "H" bit and then tapped an 8mm thread. The side with the wires I threaded with m12x2.0 thread. I ground out the frame of the scooter to take the 12mm side.

Are you using 10s or 12S?
