reverse switch

Post by speedmd » May 19 2017 10:31am

Have a customer with a trike axle running in reverse direction with no switch attached. Controller has a 3 wire lead for a reverse switch, but no switch is handy and no one wants to risk bricking the controller. Any help is welcome.

If the controller has a self learn function you can connect the two wires and turn on the controller while spinning the wheel in the forward direction. If the wheel is stopped when you turn it on the self learn function has a 50/50 chance of selecting the right hall sequence but for the wrong direction. The self learn wires on the last two controllers I've done were white with matching male and female connectors.

Thanks for that. I saw that the self learn worked for AW in another older thread also. Will give that a try to get it running the right direction at least. Imagine the three wire connector would be something like connect center to side wire for one direction, and center to other side for opposite. Don't have a spare controller on hand if it goes south. Wish this was all spelled out somewhere.

You could try a jumper between any two wires on the reverse connector and slowly apply throttle to see what happens. If you want to be extra safe, use a 1k resistor instead of a jumper, but those connections are made to be grounded. One wire should be ground. You could also try measuring the voltage on the 3 wires with the controller turned on. Measure vs. battery negative.

Some controllers will be speed limited in reverse more than forward.

Thanks fechter. The 1k risistor is a great idea for this type of trial and error. Will measure and post what works out.

The self learn did work to find forward again. On the three wire reverse connector, the blue wire to ground will reverse rotation. Worked as should, showing slightly less speed in reverse. Thank to all for the help.
