LAS VEGAS (KSNV NEWS3LV) —
51-year-old Kayvan Khiabani will be greatly missed here at UMC. One of his specialties was microsurgery.. for instance, replanting a hand, or thumb that a patient might have lost in an accident. But beyond that, those who knew him say he was an amazing friend.
"It was a very tough day. You're using all your training to try to save a colleague", says Dr. Dale Carrison of UMC.
Dr. Dale Carrison knows it's bound to happen.
As chief of staff at University Medical Center, seeing a familiar face come through the trauma center is always a possibility.
On Tuesday, it was a fellow doctor, Kayvan Khiabani. He was hit and killed while riding his bicycle near West Charleson and Pavilion Center Drive.
"He was very well liked in the operating room. He was a nice man. You've seen the picture, the big smiling face, he always had that", said Carrison.
Doctor Khiabani also worked with the University of Nevada Reno school of medicine. He was helping to train the next generation of medical professionals.
His area of expertise wasn't limited to microsurgery.
In 2011, he appeared right here on News 3 for a discussion about the benefits of botox on migraines.
While Tuesday's accident is still under investigation, police say it appears the doctor lost control of his bicycle, and veered into the side of a tour bus. First responders acted quickly.
It's a loss. It's a loss to the community and it's a loss to his patients", said Carrison.
Carrison says while Khiabani's legacy will live on thanks to the countless doctors he helped train, the focus now, is on his family.
He says you learn quickly at a major trauma center to care for the living.

Police are searching for an unidentified Chicago man who’s been accused in the attempted kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl who fought him off at the park.
The eerie event took place Sunday afternoon when family members of the child say a group of local kids were playing together when the man approached and grabbed the girl, according to WGNTV.

The child claimed she fell off of her bike in the attack when the suspect placed a plastic bag over her head in attempt to keep her quiet without getting a visual of his face.
She then kicked him in the face, able to flee the scene unscathed — and rushed to her grandmother, Teressia Kidd's house.
"We thought everything was fine because around here we kind of look out for eachother, you know. So something like this you don't really just expect to happen," Kidd told ABC 7 Chicago.

Residents of the neighborhood were shocked when they got word of the reported kidnapping attempt.
"That's actually frightening. I actually never seen anything like that, I live right here," Gerardo Yepez said.
"Makes me don't even want to come to this park anymore," resident Janee Walker added.

The child’s mom, Cheniece Kidd, said her daughter stayed home from school Monday and is still “shooken up” from the incident.
The victim described the suspect to police as an African American male, around 5 feet, 5 inches tall with a medium build, brown eyes and dark hair.
He was wearing gray sweatpants and a red hat at the time.

TEMECULA: Bicyclist, struck by pickup truck yesterday, dies at hospital
By Trevor Montgomery on April 27, 2017·1 Comment
TEMECULA – A bicyclist has died after he was struck by a pickup truck Wednesday evening, April 26. The deadly accident happened in the area of Temecula and Pechanga Parkways in Temecula. Despite life-saving efforts, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff today, Thursday, April 27.
The victim has not yet been identified, pending notification of the his family.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Temecula Police Station responded to the accident about 8:52 pm, after emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting a major-injury traffic collision involving the bicyclist and the truck, Riverside County Sergeant William Pratt explained in a written press release after the accident.
When emergency first responders arrived at the scene, they found the bicyclist down in the roadway. Medical personnel quickly determined the victim had sustained major, traumatic injuries in the collision. Firefighter/paramedics treated the victim at the scene, before AMR medics transported him to an area hospital. He was listed in grave condition.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Temecula PD’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
During their investigation, Traffic Unit members determined “a pickup truck turning right from Temecula Parkway to Pechanga Parkway collided with a bicyclist,” Pratt explained.
“There are no initial indications alcohol played a role in the collision,” said Pratt.
Part of the intersection was closed to traffic for several hours while officials conducted their investigation, which is active and ongoing.
Anyone with information about this incident or who witnessed the deadly collision is urged to contact Officer Carpenter at the Temecula Police Department at (951) 696-3000. Callers can refer to incident file number TE171160196 and can remain anonymous. Citizens may also submit a tip using the Sheriff’s CrimeTips online form.

HALF MOON BAY — A driver was arrested early Saturday after hitting and killing a bicyclist, then fleeing the scene while dragging the victim’s bike away, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers were called about 7:05 a.m. to Highway 1 south of Furtado Lane after receiving reports of a collision. They found a 44-year-old Half Moon Bay man on the right road shoulder, gravely injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While there were some remnants of what appeared to be a collision, no bicycle was found at the site. But officers found a debris trail that actually led them to a home about a mile away. There they found the 1999 Ford SUV they believe hit the victim. They also found the Trek road bike that the victim was riding.
Angel Gabriel Gongora Mis, a 29-year-old Half Moon Bay resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter and destroying evidence.
“Investigation revealed that the detained subject was driving the Ford SUV which struck the bicyclist, and fled the scene with the bicycle still lodged under his vehicle,” the CHP stated in a collision report.
Investigators suspect that Gongora Mis “failed to see” the bicyclist and rear-ended him, then drove off, according to the CHP. There were no immediate signs that he was driving impaired.
The victim’s identity was not released by authorities Saturday pending notification of his next of kin.
Anyone who might have witnessed the collision or has information for the CHP can contact Officer Cesar Perez at 650-369-6261.

SAN LORENZO — A local school was in mourning Wednesday after an 11th-grade honor student riding his bicycle to school was hit and killed by a freight train, authorities said.
The name of the 16-year-old boy, a San Lorenzo resident, was not immediately released. He was a junior at KIPP King Collegiate High School at 2005 Via Barrett, which planned to keep the campus open until 8 p.m. Wednesday for students and families looking for support or to grieve with other members of the school community.
“This was a beloved member of our 11th grade class and the entire school community, and he was an active member of leadership and the debate team,” KIPP King Collegiate Principal Kelly Lara wrote in a statement. “He had a big heart, and he was able to build close friendships and earned the support and loyalty of those around him. He will be greatly missed.”
Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said the boy was a 4.0, AP honors student who “was really beloved. He was happy-go-lucky, a very intelligent person.”
The school on Wednesday was in mourning and its counselors were being joined by counselors provided by the sheriff’s department, to aid students and faculty.
Authorities said the boy was riding his bicycle on the tracks, on a narrow trestle a couple hundred yards north of the intersection of Grant and Railroad avenues, about 8:06 a.m. Wednesday when he was hit by a southbound Union Pacific locomotive pulling numerous cars.
Kelly said the train had its horn blaring and tried to take other preventive actions before the boy was hit.
No other injuries were reported and the death is being investigated by Union Pacific police and the sheriff’s office.
Justin Jacobs, a railroad spokesman, said “our hearts go out to family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.”
He also said the locomotive engineer and conductor were immediately put in touch with peer counselors.

POSTED: 05/05/17, 6:26 PM PDT | UPDATED: 4 HRS AGO
A 13-year-old girl on a bicycle was struck by an MTA bus and killed Friday in south Redondo Beach.
The crash occurred about 5:40 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway and Knob Hill Avenue, Redondo Beach police Lt. Shawn Freeman said.
The girl, reportedly a student at nearby Parras Middle School, was pronounced dead at the scene. A friend she was riding with was not injured, police said.

Police said the girl was traveling east on Knob Hill Avenue to cross PCH and that she somehow rolled out into the street when the bus was traveling south in the lane closest to the curb on PCH.
The girl may have rolled out into the street and made a small circle to come back to the curb, Freeman said. Police are not sure yet whether she was hit by the front or the side of the bus.

The collision occurred at an intersection with many witnesses, including employees of an Exer Urgent Care facility who came out to help the girl, but there was nothing they could do to save her, Freeman said.
Police took statements from the bus driver, who stopped after the collision, as well as several passengers.
They believe the bus was traveling at a safe speed, Freeman said.
“There’s no reason to believe this is anything other than a tragic accident,” Freeman said.

The Daily Breeze obtained the name of the victim from a friend at the scene, but police would not confirm it.
The friend, Alisa Iwai, 12, identified her as a classmate at Parras Middle School.
Alisa said when she heard about the accident on the news, she suspected it might be her friend because she knew the girl liked to ride bikes.
“I saw her bike and recognized it from Snapchat,” Alisa said. “I was so shocked.”
She said she has known the girl for two years and they both were in the same physical education class.

“She was really nice. She did tennis, she would always talk to me about her life,” Alisa said. “We were really good friends. Our lockers were right next to each other.
“I can’t believe this happened,” she said. “I don’t know what to do. I didn’t get to say goodbye to her.”

The girl’s crumpled bike could be seen on the northwest corner of the intersection. PCH at Knob Hill Avenue, Topaz Street and Avenue A, and Knob Hill Avenue at Elvira and Gertruda avenues were expected to be closed for hours while police investigate.
Metro spokesman Rick Jager said the bus, traveling the 232 route — which runs between LAX and Long Beach — was operated not by Metro, but a contractor, MV Transportation.
Jager said initial reports indicated the girl rode her bike into the side of the bus.

In February 2015, a LADOT bus operated by MV Transportation struck an elderly Torrance couple, Allen and Lynn Shall, while they were crossing Avenue I just east of Catalina Avenue in the Riviera Village. Allen was killed and Lynn was severely injured.
MV Transportation, LADOT and the bus driver, Mitchell Curtis Floyd, were named in a wrongful death lawsuit Lynn Shall filed in December 2015 that was later settled. Floyd later pleaded no contest to a single misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

BARSTOW — A bicyclist who was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle Monday afternoon succumbed to his injuries, authorities said, and the man believed to be responsible remains at large.

The victim, identified as a 40-year-old Barstow man by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, was struck near the Deluxe Cleaners store in the 1000 block of East Main Street at approximately 12:53 p.m. Monday.

The Barstow Police Department identified the man as Bennett Warner, a longtime Barstow resident.

Police said it’s believed Warner was struck by a man in an older model pick-up truck, later identified as Raymundo Alberto Rodriguez-Cordova, 22, of Barstow. The incident was reportedly intentional after both men were involved in an argument.

According to police, an investigation revealed that Cordova approached Warner while he was riding his bicycle westbound on Main Street. Cordova exchanged words with Warner and a verbal argument ensued. Further details on what the argument was about weren’t available.

Cordova then followed Warner into the parking lot of Deluxe Cleaners, accelerated his vehicle, and intentionally rammed Warner, forcing him into a parked vehicle, police said.

Cordova then fled from the scene southbound on Muriel Drive. He’s described as a Hispanic man with brown hair and brown eyes, is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Witnesses describe the vehicle as an black, older model pick-up truck, possibly a 1993 Chevy S10, with red or primer markings on the front. The truck has a Kansas license plate with a license plate number of 180GRS.

Detectives were also able to locate surveillance video depicting portions of the collision and the suspect’s vehicle, which have been released to the public. However, Cordova remains at large as of Tuesday evening.

The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Tom Lewis at 760-255-5187. Persons wishing to remain anonymous can contact the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-782-7463 or online at http://www.wetip.com

Long Beach police arrested two men this week for allegedly intentionally slamming their car into a bicyclist as part of a possibly gang-related attack, according to authorities.
The two men fled after crashing into the cyclist near the intersection of 55th Street and Atlantic Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on May 10, Long Beach Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said.
The collision left the rider in critical condition, Johnson said. Paramedics took him to a local hospital, according to police.
After investigators determined the men targeted the victim on purpose, police found them on Tuesday and took them into custody, Johnson said.
Police arrested both men on suspicion of attempted murder, participating in a criminal street gang and probation violations, according to jail records.
Authorities identified the men as Ronald Maldonado, a 20-year-old Long Beach resident, and Michael Nunez, a 35-year-old transient.
Both are being held without bail, according to jail records.

Police said it appeared he was a victim of a hit-and-run crash.
"He didn't deserve to die this way," Jessica Martinez, Castillo's daughter, said. "They could've at least pulled over, rendered aid. I mean, you don't leave somebody thrown on the street like that."
Martinez was one of several relatives who gathered at his home Tuesday morning, grief-stricken and angry over his death.
Police said the driver of a dark-colored SUV kept going after running over Castillo.
Based on the police markings and scrape marks still visible at the scene Tuesday morning, it appeared Castillo and his bicycle were dragged possibly as far as 50 yards.
Linda Garcia, another of Castillo's relatives, said that a neighbor who reportedly has surveillance video of the crash told the family there were two vehicles that hit him. She said one driver stopped to remove Castillo's bicycle from his car.
"So they had enough time to get that out of the bumper, but they didn't have enough time to wait there with him," Garcia said.
The relatives placed a wreath in Castillo's honor steps away from where he was killed.
Garcia said she hopes the driver responsible for his death will feel her family's pain.
"The family needs closure. They need to know what happened," Garcia said.
Anyone with information on the crash or the driver is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867).

A bicyclist was killed and another was seriously injured early Wednesday in a hit-and-run crash in Winnetka that a witness described as "on purpose."

Los Angeles Police Department investigators are working to determine if the driver intentionally struck the cyclists.

The crash was reported about 12:45 a.m. in the 6500 block of Winnetka Avenue, according to LAPD.

Both bicyclists were traveling north on Winnetka Avenue when they were struck by a utility truck in the No. 3 lane, Capt. Paul Vernon told KTLA.

The driver, believed to be a man in his 30s or 40s, swerved and crashed into one bicyclist, then the other, a witness told police. He then stopped and looked at the scene before leaving the area at a normal rate of speed, officials said.

"I'm sure it was done on purpose," a witness who gave his name as Vladimir told a freelance news photographer on scene. "After he look at them and see them down on the ground, he just left."

Vladimir said he was driving behind when he was the collision.

"He was driving behind the bicyclists. He saw them, he changed the lane on purpose, hit them from the behind," Vladimir said. "Run over the bicycles and took off."

The victims were taken to a hospital, where one of them died. The other bicyclist suffered serious injuries, police said.

"The question is what was behind the intent of doing this. Was it intentional, was it accidental, drunk driver or otherwise or was it intentional?" Vernon said. "What we do know is the driver left without rendering aid, without identifying himself and that is against the law."

The roadway has three lanes in each direction and a center turn lane at the site of the crash.

The suspect vehicle is described as a Ford or Chevrolet pickup truck with tool beds on the side and possibly some collision damage, Vernon said.

The driver is described as having close cropped hair or a shaved head and facial hair.

The victims were on their way home from working at a restaurant at Ventura Boulevard and Tampa Avenue.

Another driver, who apparently witnessed the crash, stopped and remained at the scene.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Family and friends of 25-year-old Justin Vega, who was killed in a hit and run accident, are asking the community to help catch his killer. Vega was riding his bike to his new job at FedEx on Elder Creek Road in Sacramento, when he was hit from behind.
Police say Vega may have been hit around 11 p.m. on Thursday, but his body wasn’t found until almost four hours later. His sister, Antoinette Aguirre says, even if the driver just made an anonymous call to 911, she believes her brother might still be alive.
“To hit somebody and not stop. To know that you hit them, and didn’t stop. That could have changed the whole situation,” said Aguirre. Aguirre says when her brother didn’t come home Friday morning from his graveyard shift, she called the company. They told her that Justin never clocked in, but that they did hear of an accident down the street. Aguirre then went to crash site and saw emergency crews cleaning up the scene – and removing a bike.
“They were walking his bike at the scene and I kinda knew at that point, that it had to have been my brother,” she said. Saturday afternoon, Aguirre held a small gathering to honor and remember her brother, who they jokingly called “The Beast,” for his ability to always step up to a challenge. Hunter Everly, who was at the function, called Justin “a brother.” He says Justin always had solid advice for his friends. “Stay out of trouble, and keep my head on straight,” he said was one piece of advice Justin once gave him.
Everly says there is a sense of anger among his friends, knowing that the person who killed Justin is still out there. “It’s not right at all. If you did something and you know you’re wrong for it, you should come up and confess. We are sitting here not knowing what happened. We would like some answers,” he said.
For Justin sister, there is a sense of frustration, believing that a phone could have saved her brother’s life. “If anybody called. Even if you did it and you called, and said, ‘I saw a car accident.’ Anything. It could have saved his life,” she said.
Aguirre says police say they don’t have any leads on a suspect, but they did tell her that pieces of the car were found at the scene. She hopes that evidence will help in the investigation.
A GoFundMe account has been set-up to help the family plan his funeral.

How Denver rates on bike-friendliness; Wash Park improvements planned
Jun 7, 2017, 11:35am MDT Updated Jun 7, 2017, 12:10pm MDT
Making Denver a friendly place for cyclists is a big issue for city leaders.
At a city council meeting last March, Denver Council President Albus Brooks said that decreasing reliance on cars is "the area that most of us on City Council agree on — that this is the direction that we want to go."
Some argue that putting so much effort into this is bad news for cars and will only increase congestion further. Others advocate for it as being a way to provide routes for all modes of transportation and promote exercise and better air quality.

For now, it appears city officials are making progress on bikes. A pair of recent reports named the Mile High City among the best in the nation for being bike-friendly.
RewardExpert, an online travel service company, said Denver was the 10th most bike-friendly city for tourists.
The report ranked the U.S.'s 53 largest cities based on 13 metrics, such as biking infrastructure, city profile, bike-sharing availability and biking safety.
"Denver is historically a very bike-friendly city. It scored well across all our dimensions. The city has 267 miles of paved biking paths, which ranks third of all the cities we analyzed," RewardExpert's report said. "Denver’s B-cycle has many stations and bikes in its fleet. Denver ranked fourth in regard to number of bike share stations per capita. Travelers should have no problem biking through the city."
And late last month, WalkScore.com ranked Denver as the 4th most bike-friendly in the U.S.. Denver received a bike-score of 71, calculated by measuring bike infrastructure (lanes, trails, etc.), hills, destinations and road connectivity, and the number of bike commuters.

Denver also receives relatively high marks for its walkability, a long-time focus of state leaders. In the WalkScore report, it ranked 16th overall, and a recent Thrillist ranking put it 10th in the nation.
Adding to both Denver's walkability and bicycle-friendliness is something Denver Parks and Recreation is tackling, too. The city will begin improvements to the Washington Park Loop Road with the of goal of making it safer for visitors.
The 2.2-mile road follows the perimeter of the park and is popular for cycling, walking, rollerblading and jogging. Modifications will include a new configuration aimed at addressing major congestion points along the loop (see photos).

They include:
▪Lane configuration improvements comprised of a two-way pedestrian lane separated by a two-foot painted buffer from two unidirectional lanes that accommodate wheel-based recreation
▪Crosswalk and car traffic zone improvements with hatched buffers, flexible bollards, green dashed pavement markings, shared lane markings, pavement markings, and painted crosswalks.
▪Signage improvements and the addition of new lane configuration signs, speed limit signs and vehicular regulatory traffic signs. These signs will be installed in strategic areas throughout the park to ensure maximum opportunity for education and awareness of the rules and regulation along Loop Road and throughout Washington Park.

Construction on the Washington Park loop improvement project will begin June 19 and is slated for completion by the end of July.
