what about a jet engine?
high RPM and no need for gear reduction. I think that every additional part eats up efficiency.
would a jet be better? (longer runtime?)

Oh so close! Good job! Still one of the few working boards. You should be proud. I always ask my kid to try my creations, and they politely decline. How nice would it be to weigh 80 lbs sometimes.

While a jet is a bit simpler in terms of construction, it has a much lower efficiency when compared to a prop.
 
Hello. I'm new to this forum and have a couple questions but first a lil bit of background. I am a designer with a number of 3D printers large and small and I want to build an efoil type board. My questions are:

Can a trolling motor be converted to operate like an efoil?
What kind of thrust is needed to get you riding and what are the thrust specs on the efoil?

I was thinking I could design and 3d print the foil/wing and infuse that with resin. Buy the motor and attach that to a board. Then build some kind of remote using one of those power skateboard controllers. Forgive my ignorance as I dont know much about this kind of thing but I'm interested in the build.

@Isham.padron - The problem with trolling motors in general is that they are not designed for speed.
From msk8's last youtube video where he manages to get up on the wing, you can see that he needed around 1.6kW of power. In terms of thrust, I'm not quite sure what the calculations would be.
 
On another note, all my electronics have now arrived! I think I will proceed as follows:

- Test Electronics
- Print and assemble motor housing
- Build hydrofoil (wings, fuselage and baseplate)
- Fit to board
- Go flying :)

This motor is about 300W and probably brushed, which makes it impossible to push far out of its design performance limits. I cooked seadoo torpedo brushed motor in 1 min, just doubling the output.

Anyway, something similar designed for 2000W from start on, could make a great platform for efoil.

There is this brushless trolling motor. Different prop and probably it can do it.
 
You guys are making a good move on this project as of finalizing the hard part of the jet foiler. It makes more sense to build a E-foil than the jet board as for now. Last night I made a plexi waterproof box specifically for the ESC, so no contact with the water if the board gets submerged. I'm just going to remove the jet drive and refabricate the compartment for the ESC and the hydrofoil mount. I will be posting more better video's.

By the way the board is updated. almost close to done until now, turining it into a hydrofoil.

I have accsess to a small laser cutter, Small CNC 3 axis mill and a 4 axis wood cnc. Please give some idea what I can do to utilize these machine to make parts to keep cost low.
 
Have an idea, what about using 2 gears like drive gear and driven gear to run the bigger diameter prop instead of using the planetary gear setup? My 300a ESC just got in today and I have a gear drive setup to the brushless motor about to design a prop and PLA 3d print it.
 
Check this site out, a Torqueedo planetary gear box is a lot cheaper but I don't know how long it would take to come in the mail. Better than paying over $300. :roll:

Hi anbat8, quite simply there isn't a motor on hobbyking that will allow you to avoid a gearbox. That spirit motor appears to be around a 50KV motor (allowing for inefficiencies). Its completely custom built for epropulsion. You'd have to custom wind a motor to try and achieve something similar or alternatively buy the lower pod from the spirit motor and hope it works.

I've been toying with the idea of making one of these. I've ordered a kit from http://www.clearwaterfoils.com/ already. I'm going to just use it as a wake foil behind a boat for now. The thing that's holding me back from making an electric one is the gearbox. Even the one that pacificmeister used doesn't look like it was made to handle the power of that motor. I don't think it will last long. I was thinking maybe go direct drive with a small impeller and jet pump, but I think at 20,000rpm or so there would be really bad cavitation.

Maybe not with the right impeller design. Implanted heart pumps can run up to 15k rpm without cavitation. Instead of a more conventional propeller-like arrangement, it looks more like a screw with a housing around it.
 
how/where can I find an "efficient" jet drive?
and how much less efficient are they compared to impellers?

for an impeller, would it make sense to rewind a motor to have less RPM?
