FLORENCE, Calif. (KABC) --
An innocent man in the Florence area was killed in a shooting following a car accident he wasn't even involved in.
The deadly gunfire erupted about 11:30 a.m. near South Hooper Avenue and East 92nd Street, where LASD deputies discovered the 20-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.
Homicide investigators said it all started with a crash between two vehicles near the location.
The occupants of the vehicles were in an argument when shots were fired by a third person. Officials said the gunshots appear to have been directed at the occupants but they were not struck.
The victim was riding his bicycle toward the scene of the collision when he was hit by gunfire in the upper torso, investigators said, and he died at the scene.
They added it did not appear he was an intended target.

The suspect, who was in a separate car, went back inside his vehicle and fled eastbound on 92nd Street and out of view. Police confirmed that person's car was not involved in the original crash.
Detectives were trying to figure out exactly who opened fire. The occupants of both vehicles were detained, interviewed by investigators and released, according to LASD officials.
It was unknown if the incident was gang-related.
Anyone with information was encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

A man who stopped at a Riverside gas station to put air in the tires of his bike was ambushed and fatally shot Sunday night, according to a witness.
Police received several calls about 9:19 p.m. reporting a shooting had just occurred behind a gas station located in the 7400 block of Indiana Avenue, the Riverside Police Department stated in a news release.
Responding officers found the victim, who has not been identified, suffering from several gunshot wounds.
He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to the Police Department.
A witness told KTLA the victim was putting air in his bike's tires when he was ambushed by a gunman who got out of a car.
It was unclear if the shooter got back into the vehicle or fled on foot after the shooting, Lt. Dwayne May said.
No weapon was recovered at the scene and no description of the gunman or the vehicle was immediately available.
Detectives are hoping surveillance video from the store will provide further details about the shooting.
A social media group reported officers were involved in the shooting, but police say that is not the case.
“Unfortunately a Facebook community group or page reported falsely that this was a fatal officer-involved shooting by Riverside police,” Officer Ryan Railsback said. “None of our officers fired their weapons for any reason while here.”
The location where the shooting took place was described as a well-known gang area but it was unclear if the shooting was gang related, May said.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Police Department at 951-353-7213 or 951-353-7103.

San Francisco Bicyclist Hit In Intersection
June 20, 2017 – Moises Chavez 51, a San Francisco resident, was struck and killed by an unidentified person driving a car while riding his bike along Alemany Boulevard near the intersection with Silver Avenue. The fatal collision occurred around 5:30 pm Tuesday evening.
Police reported the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Chavez was taken to the hospital and later passed away from the injuries caused by the incident. No other details about the crash have been provided at this time.
We offer our condolences to Mr. Chavez’s family and friends.

San Francisco ranks as one of the most walkable cities in the U.S. It’s also a very bicycle-friendly city. Tens of thousands of bicyclists take an estimated 82,000 daily bicycle trips. Unfortunately,
The City is also home to some of the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians and
bicyclists in California. Alemany Boulevard is considered a high injury area by the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

In 2014, San Francisco adopted the goal of reducing serious and fatal injuries on its roads to zero within 10 years; thus far, it has not made much progress. Every year in San Francisco, about 30 people lose their lives and over 200 are seriously injured while traveling on city streets. More than 70% of severe and fatal traffic injuries occur on just 12% of The City’s streets.

BATON ROUGE - Police say a bicyclist was randomly chased down and murdered on a Baton Rouge roadway, and the suspects are still at large.
According to police, 39-year-old Wilbert Bell Jr. was shot and killed in the 2700 block of Lockwood Avenue on June 15.
Police say Bell was chased on the roadway and shot multiple times. According to L'Jean McKneely with BRPD, it's believed the suspects approached Bell as he was riding his bike along the roadway.
"He dropped the bike, took off running and these guys gave chase," McKneely said.
Throughout the course of the investigation, police learned that the victim was shot by multiple black male suspects who were last seen fleeing the area westbound on Chippewa Street in a white SUV. Police believe Bell was randomly targeted.
"We think it was a random act," McKneely said. "They saw this guy riding his bicycle and they just attacked him."
Homicide detectives are attempting to identify the individuals who were captured on surveillance video as they chased after Bell on the night of the shooting.
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 389-4869.

Terrible Person Shoots Ballard Safe Streets Advocate With Pellet GunTom Fucoloro

Image from Keller. The pellet hit her in the thigh.

Some terrible person shot Haley Keller with a pellet gun Monday night while she and her husband Dave were biking home from watching the sunset at Golden Gardens.

Keller, a Connect Ballard advocate, Board Member of Cascade Bicycle Club and Washington Bikes, and co-founder of Pedder Brewing, said the pellet hit her in the thigh, leaving a nasty welt that is turning into a bad bruise. The experience shook her up, but she’s glad that at least it didn’t hit her in a more dangerous spot, like in the face.

The two of them were biking south around 11 p.m. on the Burke-Gilman Trail where it runs next to Seaview Ave NW near Shilshole Marina when someone in the rear seat of a car driving in the same direction shot “at least five times in a row,” she said:

Advertisement. Story continues ↓

We immediately stopped, and I sat on the ground trying to process what just happened and look at my leg. Dave immediately called the cops. They came pretty quickly, took my story, took pictures of my leg, it’s Incident #17-239632. They said they had reports of someone shooting something similar from a vehicle at houses & condos in the area too. So sounds like they shot at me on my bike, sped away, then shot at some houses too. Really terrible, I’m quite shaken up about it, definitely didn’t sleep well last night.

It sounds like the assholes who assaulted her went around shooting at homes in the area, so if you have any information you should contact Seattle Police and give them the case number above.

Keller is a business owner in Ballard and a strong advocate for safer streets. She has been a leader in neighborhood efforts to improve the sidewalks on the Ballard Bridge and, of course, to complete the Missing Link of the Burke-Gilman Trail that should run near her brewery.

Bicyclist struck by garbage truck has died

The Bakersfield Californian 21 hrs ago  0
A 64-year-old bicyclist who was struck by a garbage truck Tuesday morning has died, according to a coroner's release.
Michael Yunk, of Bakersfield, was pedaling along the 200 block of Jefferson Street, northeast of downtown, when he tried to pass a City of Bakersfield garbage truck, police and coroner's officials said.
Yunk lost control of his bike and fell, and the truck ran over him, police said. The driver called 911, and Yunk was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he died about six hours later.
Police said neither drugs, alcohol nor speed appeared to be a factor for the truck driver.

Police have arrested the driver who they believe struck a bicyclist on Natchez Trace Parkway on Saturday morning.
Greg Goodman and Tyler Noe were cycling on the designated bike route when a black Volvo struck Noe.
Noe, who has non-life-threatening injuries, is receiving treatment at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.
Goodman was wearing a camera and provided video to investigators. He posted the video on Facebook, which has since gone viral.
After reviewing video of the incident, 58-year-old Marshall Grant Neely III, was arrested.
Neely, who lives in Franklin, served as dean of students at the University School of Nashville.
A representative from the University School of Nashville sent the following statement:
Marshall Neely served as dean of students at University School of Nashville before transitioning to a part-time role this summer. He also is parent of two alumni. As of today, USN has placed Mr. Neely on leave of absence while we investigate the circumstances. All other matters related to his employment are confidential. We appreciate the work of law enforcement on this matter and will cooperate fully with their investigation. Our thoughts are wit the cyclist and his family as well as the Neely family during this difficult time.
Neely is charged with reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to immediately notify of an accident and failure to render aid.
"The Natchez Trace Parkway is a designated bicycle route, and bicycle traffic increases dramatically on the weekends and holidays," said Acting Chief Ranger Calvin Farmer. "In Mississippi and Tennessee, bicyclists are allowed to use the full lane of traffic to ride in when necessary. Federal regulations require bicyclists to ride single file, and riders are encouraged to move to the right to allow for vehicles to pass. It is also highly recommended riders wear high-visibility clothing and flashing front and rear lights. Vehicle drivers must provide a safe distance when overtaking and passing a bicyclist."

Neely was booked into the Williamson County Detention Center. Additional charges are pending.

SAN BERNARDINO >> A pedestrian and a bicyclist were struck and killed by vehicles Thursday night in two separate San Bernardino crashes — one of which authorities said was a hit-and-run.
Just after 11 p.m. Thursday, a 37-year-old man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle on soutbound Arrowhead Avenue near 13th Street. The driver fled, police said.
Paramedics took the man to St. Bernardine Medical Center, where he later died.

Investigators tracked down the driver, and he was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Sgt. Todd Zeigler said. The driver’s name was not released Friday morning.
Earlier Thursday, a pedestrian was struck and killed crossing Highland Avenue outside of a crosswalk.
Shortly before 9 p.m., witnesses told police they saw a man run into the road when a eastbound vehicle struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, visibly traumatized over the incident, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, police said.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected factors in the crash.
San Bernardino police are investigating both crashes.
A third person was reported to police as being struck and killed on Byron Street and Sterling Avenue, but those reports were unfounded.

The extent of the injuries suffered by the second cyclist wasn’t immediately clear.
The driver fled before officers arrived, Morouse said, but was located a short time later attempting to push the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision out of the roadway on Newport Boulevard, near 16th Street.
The driver, who police identified as 23-year-old Taylor Evans, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI with bodily injury, hit and run and vehicular manslaughter, Morouse said.

Three boys, ages 12, 13 and 14, were charged with felony robbery in connection with the July 11 incident. They were taken to a juvenile detention center. News 6 is not naming the boys because of their ages.

Ridnel Meus, 19, was riding his bicycle home from the grocery store around 6 p.m. on July 11 when a group attacked him on Alhambra Drive, deputies said.

"I see five of them -- three guys and two girls, and I knew two of them and then one of them stand in front of the bicycle," Meus told News 6. "One of them punched me in my back. So, the one that was in front tried to hold me down for the others punching me. When I was falling on the ground (they), like, stomped on my head, beat me."
Deputies said the boys hit the victim, stomped on him, took his bike, stole his Adidas sandals and threw away his groceries in an attack that left Meus suffering from multiple scrapes and bumps.

A witness filmed the attack and gave the video so it could used as evidence to help catch the attackers. Detectives thanked the witness and said the video was "key in this investigation."
The first arrest was made Friday, the same day deputies released the video. Deputies announced the two additional arrests on Tuesday and said that no further arrests are expected.
Since News 6 originally reported on the attack, a couple purchased a new bike for Meus and aGoFundMe account has been established to help Meus with his and his family's expenses.

REDLANDS >> A 55-year-old San Bernardino man riding a motorized bicycle was killed around Saturday night after being struck by two vehicles, according to Redlands police.
The man was riding on Alabama Street north of Pioneer Street about 10:30 p.m. when he was hit by a passenger vehicle traveling south on Alabama, according to a Redlands police news release.
The vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old Highland man, left the scene of the accident.
But, two hours later, the driver reported his involvement in the accident to Redlands police, according to the release.
“The driver came into the police station and reported that he had been involved in the accident,” said Carl Baker, city spokesman, in an email Monday.
The man told police where he had parked his vehicle, Baker said. Police located his 2010 Suburu Impreza a short distance from the site.
The man has not been arrested, Baker said.
Shortly after the accident, the victim, who was lying in the roadway, was struck by a second car driving south on Alabama Street.
The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene until police and paramedics arrived, according to the release.
The driver of the first vehicle had already left the scene before the man was struck by the second vehicle, Baker said.
The victim was treated by paramedics before being transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later, the release says.
The accident is still under investigation.

Bicyclists work to identify hit-and-run driver who mowed down three cyclists
9Updated on July 31, 2017 at 12:36 PMPosted on July 31, 2017 at 11:43 AM
By Christine Vendel
About 50 bicyclists plan to converge tonight near the site of an intentional hit-and-run wreck that severely injured a 67-year-old cyclist and knocked down two others.
The event at 7 p.m. in Lebanon County is intended to help identify the driver who reportedly mowed down the cyclists and raise awareness that bike riders and vehicle drivers need to respect each other's right to be on the road.
The driver who plowed into the cyclists without warning remains on the loose after the July 22 wreck.

Supporters plan to erect three red bikes at the scene to represent the injured cyclists along with a sign reminding motorists that state law requires them to maintain a distance of four feet. Three of the four bicyclists involved will attend the dedication and address the crowd.
The red-bike dedication will represent the first in the area.
The idea grew from an annual event where Ross Willard, of the nonprofit Recycle Bicycle, sets up white "ghost bikes" on the Capitol steps on the third Wednesday in May to represent bicyclists who were killed the year before.
Similarly, the red bikes posted at Upper Lawn and Colebrook roads will serve as a reminder for vehicles to share the road with cyclists, Willard said. He obtained permission from the property owner to erect the painted bikes.
The Chocolate Tour cycling event on Aug. 5 will pass through the exact same area of the wreck, which is another reason organizers said they wanted to bring more attention to the hit-and-run driver who remains on the loose.

The hit-and-run wreck occurred on a quiet country road about 11 a.m. July 22 in the 8000 block of Colebrook Road. The cyclists and a witness told police that the driver of a light-1990s model Dodge Durango purposefully served toward the single-file line of bicyclists--twice--plowing the second cyclist in the group into the asphalt, shattering his hip and breaking his elbow.
That cyclist, Thomas Bay, endured a 10-hour surgery last week to insert metal plates and screws into his pelvis and elbow. Bay began his long, painful road to recovery this week with a move to a rehabilitation hospital.
"He cannot move the left side of body," his wife Susan told PennLive. "He's not paralyzed, but he has to keep his left arm and leg very still and cannot do any weight bearing activity."
The injuries have kept Bay, an athlete all his life, bed-ridden for eight days. He started his first session of physical therapy Monday July 31.
"We're taking it one day at a time," Susan Bay said. "I wish they would find the driver who did it, but right now our focus is on Tom and healing him."
The wreck outraged bicyclists in the region who often have to deal with road-rage and near-misses regularly as they try to enjoy their hobby and stay in shape.

The cyclists wanted to do something to support Bay and his three friends and create opportunities for discussion about how vehicles and bicycles can peacefully coexist on the roads. That's when Bicycle South Central Pennsylvania planned the red bike dedication, said Marilyn Chastek, past president of the Harrisburg Bicycle Club.
"This is a big concern for those of us who are on the roads," she said.

While some bicyclists don't follow the rules, which gives other cyclists a bad name, Chastek said, drivers need to know that state law requires them to maintain a distance of four feet when passing cyclists.
Most drivers, however, are respectful, she noted. It's just a small percentage of the driving population that act out in ways that pose potential dangers to cyclists.
South Londonderry Police have received dozens of tips in their investigation into the hit-and-run wreck.
Police Chief William Reigle called the case the department's "highest priorty right now." Anyone with information should call police at  (717) 838-1376
"Ideally, the driver will contact us and explain what happened," Reigle said. " It's going to be a lot better for them in the long run."

Bill Eyler said he was doing a group ride on San Jose Boulevard in Lakewood when he heard the shots and felt a sharp pain.

“I heard the pops, I think, from the gun and felt the stings in my backside and the side of my hip,” said Eyler.
He said it wasn’t the first sign of animosity his group experienced that night.
“Some guy sticks his hand out the window with a Taser in it and fired it. And you could just see the blue flames just flicking at the end of the Taser,” said Eyler.
Nine miles away, on Jacksonville’s eastside, another cyclist told Action News Jax last month that someone shot him with a BB gun, too.
“Really? Is this the way I’m supposed to ride my bike nowadays? In a warzone?” said Eyler.
He said he’s not going to let his injuries stop him from cycling.
“Oh, heck no.”
He hopes other cyclists don’t get scared off the road by drivers who don’t want to share it.
