A hit-and-run driver struck two bicyclists, killing one of them, early Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, on Long Beach Boulevard at Bort Street in North Long Beach.
A bicyclist died after he jumped onto an SUV and tried to stop its driver from fleeing from the scene of a crash in North Long Beach early Monday morning, according to authorities.
Police said two bicyclists were riding along Long Beach Boulevard at the 91 Freeway off-ramp when a 2000 Ford Expedition hit one of them around 1:50 a.m.
After the crash, the second bicyclist jumped onto the SUV’s running board and reached through the driver’s window to try to turn off the ignition, police said.
But the driver sped off with the man still hanging on, according to authorities. When the SUV made a sharp turn at Bort Street, the bicyclist was thrown off and landed in the street where he hit his head on a curb, police said.
“That person came off the vehicle and was severely injured by what they struck on the street and was deceased at the scene,” Long Beach Police Lt. Mark Coble said.
The driver then stopped the car near Long Beach Boulevard and W. Adams Street and took off into the neighborhood on foot where he disappeared, according to police.
The other bicyclist struck by the SUV wasn’t seriously hurt, according to authorities. Medics treated him at the scene, Coble said.
Police didn’t identify the man who died but said he was a 51-year-old Los Angeles resident.
Authorities didn’t have any description of driver available.
“Unknown on the suspect at this point,” Coble said. “But we do have the vehicle that was involved in this collision.”
Authorities shut down a stretch of Long Beach Boulevard at Bort for a few hours while they investigated, but it reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
Police said they’re still looking for anyone who witnessed the crash. They asked that anyone with details contact Detective Brian Watt at (562) 570-7355.
