IRVINE — A 78-year-old bicyclist died Tuesday, Sept. 26, after he hit a parked car while riding in the city, police said.
The Newport Beach man was riding his bicycle southbound on Laguna Canyon Road and hit the back of the vehicle, which was parked in the shoulder of the road, said Irvine Lt. Dave Klug.
Police and firefighters found the man after getting called about the collision at about 9:51 a.m. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His name has not been released.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Irvine Police Department Detective Christopher Ostrowski at 949-724-7047.

An 74-year-old Petaluma cyclist was struck and killed by an SUV at the intersection of Valley Ford Road and Gericke Road on Wednesday morning.
Paul Umino was riding west of Valley Ford Road with his partner when he attempted to make a left turn onto Gericke Road, but rode directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle around 10:20 a.m., said Jon Sloat, a spokesman for the CHP.
The driver, Susan Davis, 68, of Novato, was traveling east in a 1999 Toyota RAV4, and tried braking but was unable to avoid a collision, Sloat said.
Umino was pronounced dead at the scene, about 15 miles west of Petaluma, Sloat said.
Drugs and alcohol were not a factor and Davis, who was traveling about 50 mph, was not cited, Sloat said.
In addition to CHP, Bloomfield Fire, Two Rock Fire, Bodega Bay Fire and Marin County Fire responded to the incident.

ORANGE – A 56-year-old Aliso Viejo man died Wednesday, Sept. 27 after falling off of his bicycle on Santiago Canyon Road.
The cyclist was riding west of the 241 freeway when he fell and sustained significant injuries, the Orange Police Department said. The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are investigating the incident.

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and industry pioneer Darryl Hensley, 79, known as "The Mad Hatter", died after colliding with a car while riding his bike as part of the Bike Burlington Dinner Ride on Wednesday, Sept. 27, KBUR reports.
Hensley was riding southbound on Carman Road in rural Henderson County Illinois shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday when he allegedly turned in front of a car. According to police reports, Hensley was killed instantly. The driver of the vehicle that struck him was also taken to an area hospital after complaining of chest pain.
Nearly everyone knew Hensley as "Hatter," short for "The Mad Hatter," which was the disc jockey's on-air persona.
"It started as his on-air persona, and then it became... it fit. It became him. He's always been Hatter to this community. Mad was his first name, and Hatter is what we called him," said Jon Billups, a co-worker and longtime family friend.
As a morning show disc jockey, Hensley often used voices and imitations to keep listeners laughing.
"To compel a teenager to get up early in the morning to listen to a radio show, that's how funny he was. I would get up early just to listen to him," said Billups.
Hensley, who had spent the last several decades in Burlington and still was working as an account executive at KBUR,  was the featured personality on radio station KZEV-FM in Clear Lake in the late 1970s when he decided a tribute was in order to commemorate the deaths of rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.

In addition to spearheading the creation of the Buddy Holly Memorial Concert, he also helped found three rock and roll FM stations in Clear Lake/Mason City, Minnesota and Burlington.

Hensley was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
"He was never anybody but Hatter. Never anybody else. And that's something to be said, because you know what, he played a lot of roles, but he was always Hatter," said Steve Hexom, a friend and morning jockey at Pritchard Broadcasting.
Rob Sussman, news director of KBUR, called Hensley an inspiration and beloved co-worker.
"Hatter was a dear friend and coworker to all of us at Pritchard Broadcasting," Sussman said. "He was larger than life and had the heart to match. Not a day went without Hatter telling us a wild story from his long and legendary career in broadcasting. We will miss him dearly. All of Burlington will miss him dearly."
According to Illinois State Police, no charges have been filed in Hensley's death.

Hemet bicyclist killed in hit-and-run near San Jacinto

A bicyclist was killed Sunday morning near San Jacinto after being struck by a vehicle that left the scene, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The victim was identified as Vivian Thomas, 57, of Hemet, according to a Riverside County Sheriff/Coroner’s news release.
The victim was riding near Ramona Expressway and Alessandro Avenue, just outside the city limits. The coroner’s release noted she was found Sunday and listed the time of death as 6:26 a.m.
The victim was found along the eastbound expressway, about 590 feet east of Alessandro Avenue.
CHP Officer Darren Meyer said the crash is being investigated as a hit-and-run. No other information was available for release, he said.

YUCCA VALLEY BICYCLIST STRUCK AND KILLED ALONG HIGHWAY 62

A Yucca Valley man riding a bicycle towing a trailer along State Route 62 in Yucca Valley was struck and killed yesterday. The county coroner says at 10:31 a.m., 911 calls were received regarding a vehicle versus bicyclist on the highway at Prescott Ave. David Rodriguez, 52, was injured and in full cardiac arrest when first responders arrived. He was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center where he died from his injuries. Accident investigator Deputy Ryan Arthurton told Z107.7 News at the scene that David Rodriguez was riding in the eastbound shoulder of State Route 62 just east of Prescott Avenue, approaching Avalon Drive, when he was struck from behind by an eastbound motorist; the driver, Diego Kim, stopped. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the collision.

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - A female cyclist was killed Friday morning after she was hit by a car near Arroyo Grande.
According to California Highway Patrol, it happened at about 7:30 a.m. when a man driving a grey Subaru hit a woman riding a mountain bike on Corbett Canyon Road near Tiffany Ranch Road, just east of State Route 227.
The driver said he was blinded by the morning sun and did not see the cyclist riding in the middle of the road when he hit her, CHP said. He slammed on the brakes but still hit the woman sending her flying into his windshield and then down onto the pavement, according to CHP.
A doctor who happened to be nearby stopped to help. He performed CPR on the bicyclist until paramedics arrived. Regretfully, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased woman has not been released but she is described as Caucasian and between 20 and 40 years old, possibly a transient. She was riding the bike while wearing flip-flop sandals. She was not wearing a helmet, CHP said.
The unidentified driver of the Subaru told CHP that he drives to work along Corbett Canyon every day.
No arrests were made. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor. A portion of Corbett Canyon Road will be closed until 10 a.m. The crash remains under investigation.

Two men believed to be behind the recent broad-daylight kidnapping and sexual assault of at least two bike riders near the Detroit-Hamtramck border have been arrested, police say.

Calling the men "serial rapists" in a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said they're also suspected in a third sex assault and may be behind more unreported incidents. 

"It appears that these suspects have done this before," Craig said, urging any additional victims to come forward.

On Sept. 30 at around 6:20 p.m., police say the men forced a 24-year-old cyclist into a van and robbed and sexually assaulted her before letting her free. That incident happened on Orleans Street and E. Milwaukee Avenue, in the area of the Russell Industrial Center. 

Eight days later, on Oct. 8, they allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted another woman who they found riding her bike about a mile from the location of the earlier incident. The 27-year-old woman was in Hamtramck, near Denton and Lumpkin streets, when she says two men in a green and gold SUV grabbed her, put a bag over her head, and threw her into the vehicle. She says she was then taken to Highland Park and tied up in abandoned house. She eventually escaped and made her way to a nearby gas station for help.

Police on Wednesday said they also suspect the men were behind a third assault that happened in or around New Center in early September. 

Separately, another woman tells Metro Times she was nearly abducted on Sept. 12 on Seward Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues in New Center — less than two miles west of the Russell. The woman, who asked that her name be withheld, said she was biking through the area when a gray van with men inside began to follow her. Eventually, the van disappeared, but as the woman went to lock up her bike, she says one of the men who'd been in the vehicle approached and muttered something like "Give me your bag and come with me." He then dragged her about 50 feet before people in nearby homes heard her screams and offered help, she said. 

It's not yet clear whether the men involved in that incident are the same men police have in custody.

Police describe one of the "serial rapists" as being in his early 20s while the other is said to be between 35-40 years old. One of the men has a prior history of sex assault.
Authorities have seized three vehicles in connection with the cases: a white van, a gray trail blazer, and a black Neon one of the suspects was driving when he was arrested. They say all of the vehicles were stolen.

Four months after a community activist was killed in a hit-and-run crash near Lake Merritt, Oakland transportation officials announced Tuesday a new plan for how to improve the safety of dangerous intersections more quickly. 

On June 2, 68-year-old Robert Bennett, a nonprofit founder who advocated for juvenile justice and mental health policy reform, was struck and killed while in the crosswalk at the intersection of Harrison and 23rd streets in the city's Uptown district. 

Traditionally, the city of Oakland has tried to approach similar tragedies with significant infrastructure changes to streets that often require major construction and can take years to complete, according to city  spokesperson Sean Maher. But at the Harrison and 23rd streets intersection, the Oakland Department of Transportation used a simple paint job to widen the median, create a bike lane, and make the crosswalk larger and more visible. 

The street improvement was completed in about 10 weeks and cost around $30,000, Maher said. Since the renovation, there’s been an 86 percent increase in drivers stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalk, according to the Oakland Department of Transportation. 

“We’re not going to stick to the old processes where took five years to get anything done,” Maher said.

Cyclist Who Survived Being Run Over By Truck Says He's 'Done with the City'

Ryan Leary faces a long recovery after he was run over by a dump truck last week.
ELMHURST — For Ryan Leary, 31, a transplant to Bushwick from Western Massachusetts, getting run over by a dump truck last week was the final link in a chain of bad luck that convinced him it's time to leave New York City.
Since he moved to Bushwick three years ago, his bike was stolen, he got bed bugs, he was mugged on his own block and he lost most of his earthly possessions to water damage after firefighters had to spray a blaze started on the roof of his building when his neighbors set off fireworks there on the 4th of July. 
Then he got run over by a truck.

"I'm done with the city," Leary said from his hospital bed at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens on Tuesday evening where he's recovering with a laundry list of broken bones including his pelvis, femur, ankle and a potentially torn ACL. "New York City has done enough to tell me it doesn't want me here."
He has a broken pelvis, sacrum, femur, ankle a potentially a torn ACL and will be bedridden for months while he recovers.
He'll be bedridden for months to come.

The crash happened Oct. 3 around 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Grand Street and Bushwick Avenue in Williamsburg. Leary was out for a "joy ride," trying to clear his mind, overwhelmed with the flood of news of emerging about the Las Vegas mass shooting.
He was riding north on Bushwick Avenue next to a yellow dump truck, when he noticed the truck gain momentum as it began to turn at Grand Street. He'd been riding straight but tried to veer out of the way to avoid it, but it was too late. 

"It happened so fast and it was also in slow motion at the same time," he said. "The truck was just going completely over me. I didn't lose consciousness at any point."
"My mind was just going a million miles a minute," he said. Videos of crashes he'd seen flooded his head, and oddly practical thoughts, like what will become of his new job at French Connection, he said. "I thought I was going to be killed."
Then he was on the ground and he knew it was bad but his body was in shock. He could see his right leg was mangled. 

"It didn't really hurt but I was screaming my lungs out," he said. He started trying to crawl out of the roadway but bystanders soon gathered around him, "telling me not to panic, not to move, to breathe."
Then began a waiting game.
"Waiting for an ambulance, getting in the ambulance, then getting here; it was all just so much. I was terrified," he said. "The whole time I was just thinking, 'Somebody call my parents.'"
He'll be bedridden for months, though his doctors haven't given him any reason to believe he won't make a full recovery.
"I don't expect to be on the dance floor until like March. Even that may be positive," he said. Once he's released from the hospital he plans to move back home with his parents in South Hadley, Massachusetts until he's able to take care of himself again. Then he plans to move to California. 

Until then, with a lot of free time on his hands, he's hoping to focus on his side hustle of illustrating. He specializes in pet portraits and in hoping to bring in some commissions as the holiday season comes around.
A group of dedicated friends have helped pass the time, streaming in and out of his Queens hospital room, playing cards with him, fetching his belongings from his Bushwick room, watching football and bringing him smoothies.
On a recent visit, "they washed my hair for me and cleaned my face and scratched my back," he said.

The truck driver, 23-year-old Charles Carpenter, was arrested on scene for driving with suspended driving privileges in New York state for an unpaid ticket, according to police. He was given a ticket and is due back in court Nov. 14. Carpenter had a valid commercial license in New Jersey, according to their DMV.
L+Y Enterprises, LLC, a small New Jersey trucking company, didn't return a request for comment.

Police were also probing why the driver was on Bushwick Avenue in the first place, which is not a designated truck route, though it's frequently used by them.
The Department of Transportation, which promised a "safety action plan" for Grand Street this spring — a notoriously dangerous throughway with three deaths of pedestrians and cyclists in two years — has failed to deliver.
When asked about the promised plan, DOT declined to comment, instead pointing to a plan for better bike lanes on several nearby streets.

Leary, who'd only began cycling around the city in May, lamented the lack of protections for bikers in New York City.
"The laws are out there. They're either stupid and unenforced or they make a lot of sense and they're not enforced," said Leary.
"I wish there was more accountability for drivers with the amount of cyclists on the road," he said. "I’ve had enough close calls. It's scary how dumb they seem to be."

On October 15, 2017 at about 7:03 p.m., the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) responded to a radio call for service regarding a traffic collision involving a bicyclist at the 200 block of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).  Upon arrival, officers discovered the bicyclist on the roadway suffering from significant trauma. 
Unfortunately, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The involved vehicle initially fled the area; however, the driver later returned to the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. 
SMPD's Major Accident Response Team responded to the collision to conduct an investigation. A preliminary investigation revealed the bicyclist was riding his bicycle northbound along PCH.  The involved vehicle was travelling northbound along PCH and struck the bicyclist from the rear. 
The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation and there have been no preliminary indications the driver was impaired.  SMPD Traffic Investigators will be conducting a thorough investigation into the collision and the circumstances surrounding the driver fleeing the scene.

BOYLE HEIGHTS — One cyclist was killed and another wounded after they were shot early this morning near the Indiana Gold Line Station, police said.
The two men  heard gunshots as they were riding near 3rd and Indiana streets at about 1:35 a.m. when they realized they had been wounded, said LAPD spokesman Drake Madison.
The victims were transported in critical condition to a hospital, where one of them died. The condition of the second is unknown, Madison said.
No information was available about the suspect or suspects. It’s not clear if the shooting was gang related, Madison said.

The turbulent history of the bike bridge that will finally complete the North Shore Channel Trail Late alderman Berny Stone once blocked plans for the Lincoln Village Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge. Some say he was motivated by real estate concerns, others say racism.By John Greenfield

The late 50th Ward alderman Bernard "Berny" Stone was a colorful character. Elected in 1973 under Mayor Richard J. Daley, he presided over the far-north-side West Ridge community for nearly four decades. Throughout his career Stone was famous for his feistiness.

In the 1980s he was an original member of the Vrdolyak 29, the nearly all-white aldermanic bloc that tried to thwart Mayor Harold Washington's every move during the racially charged Council Wars. Stone reportedly relished the many verbal battles he got into at City Hall during this period. In 1986, for example, he mocked compact then freshman alderman, now congressman Luis Gutierrez as a "little pipsqueak."

In 1993, angered by plans for a new Evanston shopping center that he argued would lead to more car traffic in his ward, Stone had a nearly three-foot guardrail, nicknamed "Berny's Wall," installed in the center of Howard Street between Kedzie and California Avenues to block drivers from crossing between the suburb and the city. A judge ordered him to remove it the following year.

During his later years in office, Stone sometimes fell asleep during council meetings but was no less fiery. In 2011 he lost an acrimonious runoff election to Debra Silverstein, an ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Stone passed away in December 2014 at age 87.

Earlier this month, Silverstein showed good sportsmanship when she joined Emanuel and members of Stone's family to cut the ribbon on Bernard Stone Park, a memorial to her former foe. Located by the west bank of the North Shore Channel, just south of Devon Avenue, the 1.8-acre green space replaces what was the weed-strewn parking lot of a defunct movie theater.

Silverstein says naming the park after her onetime rival was her suggestion. "Given that he was one of the longest-serving aldermen, I felt like that would be a nice tribute to his service." That's big of her, considering that during the election Stone reportedly dismissed Silverstein, whose husband, Ira, is a state senator, as "nothing but a housewife."

It's also ironic that the park that honors Stone will be served by an upcoming bike-and-pedestrian bridge the alderman put the kibosh on while he was still in office, for reasons that remain somewhat mysterious. More than a decade after the bridge was originally planned, the Chicago Department of Transportation is finally moving forward with building the 180-foot-long weathered steel structure over the channel, just south of the new green space. Construction is slated to begin in early 2018 and wrap up a year later.

Officially called the Lincoln Village Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge, it will provide the final missing link in the North Shore Channel Trail, which runs nearly seven miles from Albany Park to Evanston. Most of the path's Chicago portion hugs the east bank of waterway, but north of Lincoln Avenue the trail shifts to the west bank. As it stands, people strolling, running, and biking are forced to make the crossing via Lincoln or Devon, busy four-lane highways.

By 2005, CDOT had designed a bridge near this location and secured funding for it. But Stone, who'd originally endorsed the project, pulled his support, forcing the department to put the initiative on ice. (I was working as CDOT's bike parking czar at the time but wasn't involved in bikeways planning discussions.)

According to CDOT deputy commissioner Luann Hamilton, who worked on the project back then, Stone claimed his opposition was based on feedback from neighbors east of Kedzie, which parallels the east bank. He said residents were worried about people parking on their streets and using the bridge to access the Lincoln Village Shopping Center, west of the channel. But Hamilton says the alderman provided no documentation to support this claim.

Not long after Stone gave the thumbs-down on the bridge project, the Lincoln Village Senior Apartments were constructed just west of the trail, near the proposed span site. "An alternative theory was that the developers . . . were concerned that the bridge would impact or detract from their site," Hamilton says.

A handful of bike advocates held a meeting with Stone to discuss the matter, according to Bob Kastigar, a retired WTTW technician who lives in the neighboring 39th Ward. "It started out friendly but soon degenerated as it became clear he wasn't going to change his mind," Kastigar says. Stone claimed he was concerned that cyclists coming off the bridge might be struck by drivers in the shopping center parking lot. "But there was a large distance between the path and the parking lot, so that didn't make any sense. We were trying to find out what his [real] concern was."

Former Active Transportation Alliance executive director Rob Sadowsky, now living in Portland, Oregon, claims that, as with the Vrdolyak 29's resistance to Washington, there was a racial element to the bridge opposition. Sadowsky says that while he was working for the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs in 2001 he attended a meeting on affordable housing in the 50th Ward during which Stone referred to African-American and Latino youths as "little blacks and browns." The alderman implied, according to Sadowsky, that the ward should avoid measures that would bring more young people of color to the neighborhood.

Sadowsky adds that when he was leading Active Trans in the mid-2000s, CDOT staffers working on the bridge project indicated that there was racially motivated NIMBY resistance to the span from white homeowners and merchants as well as from Stone. "They believed that nonwhites would travel in hordes through the ward. But no one would say that in public—they would talk about 'gangs.'"

"That infuriates me," responds Stone's daughter Ilana Stone Feketitsch, who served as the alderman's chief of staff during the last 18 years of his career, in response to Sadowsky's statements. "Never did he ever dismiss anyone of any race, color, and creed. He was a great man who lived his life for his community, including people of every race and religion." Asked about her father's involvement in the racially charged anti-Washington resistance, she responds, "He got caught up with what was going on and what he believed in."

Feketitsch, who has lived in Arizona for the last two years but attended the park ribbon-cutting, says her recollection of the bridge issue is spotty. But she says she believes the alderman's main concern was the opposition from the residents east of Kedzie, which she doesn't think was racially motivated. "He always stood for what the community wanted—they came before the bicyclists." Feketitsch adds that she currently supports the project. "It's a good thing that people from other parts of the city will use the bridge."

"That's utter nonsense to say it was a racial issue," echoes Stone's son, Jay, a hypnotherapist who in 2003—contrary to his father's wishes—unsuccessfully ran for 32nd Ward alderman against machine incumbent Ted Matlak. The younger Stone notes that the 50th Ward is home to a wide range of groups, including "Jews, Muslims, Catholics, Indians, Pakistanis, Assyrians, and African-Americans. It's such a melting pot. The biggest thing I was proud of my father for was his ability to bring people of different races and religions together." He adds that, as a cyclist himself, he was in favor of building the bridge back in the mid-2000s, but he respected his father's position on the issue.

In 2007 aldermanic challenger Naisy Dolar used the missing bridge as a campaign issue. Berny Stone blasted that strategy as "ridiculous" before defeating Dolar at the polls.

After Silverstein ousted Stone in 2011, she told CDOT she was interested in resurrecting the project. (She now says that she has no idea why Stone blocked the bridge, and hasn't heard much from constituents on the subject.) But by then the bridge funding had been used for other projects, and a canoe launch had been built at the planned bridge location, forcing the department to return to the drawing board.

In January 2013, the Illinois Department of Transportation allocated $979,600 for the bridge, but it took a few more years until additional federal and local money could be lined up for the $3.4 million project budget.

In September 2016, Silverstein and CDOT officials including Hamilton held a community meeting to present the latest plans for the bridge, which will be located just north of the canoe launch. "When they were finished there was a long period of silence," Kastigar recalls. "There wasn't any opposition. Finally someone started applauding and we all joined in."

Kastigar suggests that we should name the span the Stone Bridge, not to honor the alderman but to serve as a reminder of how one pugnacious politician can derail a worthwhile project for years. "I'm sorry he didn't live long enough to see the bridge get built."

Has Stanley Roberts Found San Francisco's Most Dangerous Bike Lane?

We're all educated people, well aware that (as first stated by Ian Betteridge), "any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." But after watching Wednesday's "People Behaving Badly" I'm struggling to Betteridge the hed I wrote above, as this lane at Battery and The Embarcadero is completely freakin' terrifying.

As you can see from Stanley Roberts' report, the dedicated bike lane is between two car lanes: The one on the far right is the turn lane, and the next two over (bike then car) are for travelers headed straight. But again and again we see drivers in the middle lane (including taxi cabs, which one might assume as non-Uber-driving professionals should really know better) plowing through the lane dedicated to forward-traveling cyclists to take the turn.

Even those of us who don't ride a bike can see the issue here — at one time or another we've likely all been shocked by a driver who suddenly chose to turn from the middle lane, other travelers be damned (my husband's only car crash ever was at the hands of one such driver, he announces every single time we witness such a maneuver). But, obviously, cyclists are far more vulnerable — we all recall the case of cyclist Amelie Le Moullac, killed by a truck driver who took a right turn from the middle lane through a Folsom Street bike lane. And she's not the only one.

Roberts notes that there are two signs warning drivers against turning from anywhere but the right lane, yet you see drivers ignoring it over and over and over. It's confounding.

According to Roberts, "hundreds and hundreds" of cyclists use the lane, called Bike Route 5, every day. Like I said yesterday, all the SFMTA efforts in the world won't work if people insist on driving like jerks, which they clearly are here. And I say this as a car driver who loves cars and driving!

Is there more that the SFMTA could do to protect cyclists at this intersection while still allowing cars on the road? And, as I ask in the headline, could this be the most dangerous bike lane in SF, or are there others that pose even more peril?

Shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a traffic collision at Broadway and Williams Street and found an elderly male in the roadway.

“According to witnesses, the elderly male was riding his bicycle eastbound on Williams and was struck by a car traveling southbound on Broadway,” Schneider said. “The vehicle left the area southbound without stopping.”

A bicyclist struck by a driver who fled the scene on over the weekend has died from his injuries, Santa Maria police said Tuesday.

Armando Recendis-Alanis, 74, of Santa Maria died at a local hospital, Sgt. Duane Schneider said Tuesday.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a traffic collision at North Broadway and Williams Street and found Recendis-Alanis lying unconscious in the roadway.

“According to witnesses, the elderly male was riding his bicycle eastbound on Williams and was struck by a car traveling southbound on Broadway,” Schneider said. “The vehicle left the area southbound without stopping.”

With the assistance of a witness, officers located the vehicle a short time later in a nearby neighborhood. However, the driver had fled on foot, Schneider said.

At 11:30 p.m., police were alerted that the driver had returned home and arrested Maria Agustina Apolonioangel, 42, of Santa Maria.

She was taken to the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

Traffic investigators are requesting anyone who might have seen the accident to contact the Police Department at 805-928-3781 x 2297

LOS ANGELES — A man riding a bicycle was killed this morning in a hit-and-run accident in Koreatown and the driver was later arrested, police said.
The crash was reported around 2 a.m. in the area of Western Avenue and San Marino Street, said Sgt. C. Barlow of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Bureau.
Both the bicyclist and the vehicle were traveling south on Western when the vehicle was believed to have rear-ended the bicyclist before continuing on, she said
The victim, who Barlow said was possibly in his 30s, died at the scene.
The vehicle believed to be involved was located and the male driver was arrested, said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

SANTA ANA – A 54-year-old homeless man died Thursday evening, Oct. 26, hours after riding his bicycle through opposing vehicle traffic and colliding with a 2005 Corvette, police said.
The bicyclist, identified as David Lee Macmillian, was riding his bike north on southbound Main Street, on the sidewalk Thursday evening. He went off of the curb and tried to cut through traffic near Columbine Avenue, said Commander Jeffrey Smith of the Santa Ana Police Department.
The bicyclist, who suffered major head trauma, died that evening.
The driver stayed at the scene. Whether Macmillan was under the influence of drugs or alcohol was still unknown, Smith said.

SANTA ANA — An 87-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed Saturday, Oct. 28, after colliding with a pickup truck while crossing the street, police said.
Witnesses told police that Lien Huu Ha, of Santa Ana, was headed east on West 1st Street and attempting to cross south at the South Center Street intersection around 12:50 p.m. when a vehicle headed east on 1st struck him, a Santa Ana police statement said.
Orange County Fire Authority paramedics responded and treated Ha at the scene and took him to UCI Medical Center, where he later died.
The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, the statement said.
It does not appear the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision, the statement said.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy on Ha, which will determine his sobriety when he was struck.
A Sigalert for traffic headed east on West 1st Street and Center Street was issued.
Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact the Santa Ana Police Department at 714-245-8200.

A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle in West Covina early Thursday.
The bicyclist was traveling westbound on West Francisquito Avenue at 4:41 a.m. when he collided with a vehicle traveling southbound on Sunset Avenue, according to West Covina police Sgt. Tim Rodgers.
The bicyclist, identified as 64-year-old Baldwin Park resident Alberto Velez Hernandez, was transported to Queen of the Valley hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:11 a.m., according to Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter.
Rodgers said Monday investigators believe either the bicyclist or the driver ran a red light.
The collision is still under investigation. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with investigators.
“Investigators are treating it as an accident,” Rodgers said.

The City of Los Alamitos announces the installation of a new “Dero Fixit Service Station and Air Pump” located in Coyote Creek Park, adjacent to the bike trail. The commercial grade bike repair and air kit station will afford cyclists the opportunity to perform repairs and maintenance. The Fixit includes all the tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. With the ability to hang the bike from the hanger arms, the pedals and wheels can spin freely while making adjustments. The Air Kit bike pump allows cyclists to fill a replacement tire or top off their tires so they can continue their ride.
The bike trail adjacent to Coyote Creek Park is just off of the Coyote Creek Channel extending from Katella (south of the 605) to Ball Road. Its reconstruction was completed in the summer and provides regional connectivity and recreational opportunities for biking, jogging, and walking separated from motor vehicles. Some students also use the trail to get to school.
