Wooden bicycles, lots of pics

Hehe... speaking of Vienna and getting yer ass electrified... more Giggle Translate, in part:
In the B2B area we also offer My Donkey Bicycles made of WOOD, which due to the frame construction offer very good possibilities for a new B2B bike concept!

My donkey frames are produced and assembled in Austria!
Unique possibilities of corporate branding
My Donkey offers in the B2B area all models as eBike but also without electric drive with 8-speed shift or singlespeed.
The frames are tested to ISO standard and weather resistant

ebike in german E is for Esel.

actually i think the name is short for the somewhat pejorative label for fahrrad.
typically invoked by noncyclists i.e. peds & cagers to show their disdain by calling them a 'draht-esel'.
the first part is being left unspoken & generally understood as implied.
similar in sentiment but just differing in aspect it's like when referring to someone as lycra is closest comparable i can think of.

^^ Hehe... Funny mixed up Europeans (their languages...) "English" a real polyglot eg with lots of Scandinavian ("Viking") thrown in there. Gotta imagine "German" is also pretty "mixed up". "English" borrows lots from the French too (one eg their "parliament") my own "English" name taken from Celts on the islands of the "Britons" ("Italian"/Roman term...)

Just another "mixed up" European here :D
I agree, some translators are horrible.
Hopefully my own English is better.
About wooden bicycles:
Here is a nice project from a guy nearby.
He is an architect and builds wooden velomobiles (faired recumbent tricycles) in his free time.
There's a mile long thread in the German velomobilforum about his builds.
https://www.velomobilforum.de/forum/index.php?threads/velomobil-in-holzbauweise.38648/
Currently he's into his fifth build.
The first project was a 40+kg test mule for determining the needed ergonomics and material dimensions, which ended as an Easter fire :?

Build2 (around 32kg) can be seen here:

This is build3 during some airflow tests.

His fourth build, now tipping the scale at 22kg:
Velomobil in Holzbauweise

All three completed builds are driven by himself and his sons.
I met him a few weeks ago at his home, talking for some hours about his building techique which is close to what was used in wooden airplanes almost a century ago.
Most impressive to me was his test work of some sort of "wood comb": He made a sandwich using two sheets of 0.6mm thin airplane plywood with 3mm thick balsa strips glued in between. This results in a weight of just 1000g/m², but is rock solid.
Also impressive to see, how he reduced the weight further and further from build to build.

Only flaw for you is, you have to use a translator for the said German thread.

Reminds me of a bicycle thats been on Kijiji now for a couple years. Similar to below but Circa early 90's. Coined term "Soft Ride" https://www.kijiji.ca/v-road-bike/calgary/vintage-original-softride-triathlon-bike/1403862155?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

A wooden bicycle would be awesome to make even if there were just blue prints I could buy so there is no guess work. I wonder though how a wooden bicycle would handle 380lbs plus the battery and motor, lots of flex!

https://www.epoxyworks.com/index.php/a-wooden-bicycle-frame/

Lots of info on it online. using my phone so the search doesn't work well.

Shocking to think my AT&T internet would be DOWN (As usual) and there's nothing I can do about it. (As usual)

They're dumb enough to think that with this never ever working right I'd opt for their more expensive service. (As usual)

Yay, my internet is back. (For who knows how long. . . .) https://toolcrib.com/blog/2009/03/10-free-wooden-bike-plans-make-your-own-wood-recumbent-bamboo-bike-and-more/

Another wooden velomobile:

I've been unsuccessful finding more information on it.

In fact, the 2nd iteration of my coroplast shell looks a lot like the above, except I have open front wheels and exposed front axles. It's not finished or ready to use yet though.

I wonder whether that velomobile is monocoque, or if it has a tube frame under there. Building a glassed plywood monocoque velomobile in the manner of a kayak would be a great way to use wood effectively, rather than only as a style exercise.

Not to be dismissive, but it looks like a variant on the Fantom and there's no need to research it specifically.

Info on 3 wheel velos is everywhere.

I'm guessing it has a frame underneath, but I really don't know. Monocoques are difficult to design properly and a lot of work.

Unlike the above links, that wooden velo's wheels aren't away from the body shell. Its aerodynamics in all likelihood offer greatly reduced drag over the Phantom or the ones presented in the 1st and 3rd links.

Unless you're referring to my first(non-wooden) prototype, which does look a bit like the Phantom, and even moreso like the one in your first link, except I used a NACA0026 airfoil shape to design it. My goal with the 2nd design iteration that is currently in construction is to get a CdA of under 0.15 m^2 while retaining open/exposed wheels/axles. The 3rd design iteration is going to use a rack and pinion steering and do away with the steering bars to allow a narrower/lower frontal area body of less weight and optimize all the little details to further reduce drag, possibly to under 0.1 m^2 CdA.

In the long run, I may end up using plywood sandwiched between fiberglass over my steel framed KMX in a shape that mimics earlier coroplast prototypes I made. Coroplast is a good material for prototypes, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

But aerodynamics on these are not hidden away, you can search for racing and they all do something with the wheels.

My one thought is about the track maybe getting too narrow. You don't want to lose stability. That picture looked like a risk to roll over. But then so does mine.
