Power is one of the most critical and high-growth areas in the engineering industry, given the increased attention to power design in everything from ebikes to smartphones to the smart grid.

Our expert editors present the engineering, design and integration of power electronic system applications, such as battery-powered systems, consumer, commercial and industrial power electronic systems; and power systems for electric and automotive transportation. Topics include ebikes, semiconductors, passive components, power management, packaging, energy efficiency, magnetics, thermal management and more.
Electric Cargo Bike’s Battery-Powered Motor Eases Pedaling
("Capable of reaching 20 mph, an electric bike employs a battery-powered mid-drive motor that assists the rider with each pedaling motion."):

The CERO One is a compact electric cargo bike from CERO that is intended for moving people and goods (Fig. 1). It is a customizable modular cargo system with one-size-fits-most versatility. These e-bikes are made specifically for pedaling and do not have a throttle like a motorcycle. In fact, some countries, don’t even allow a throttle on electric-assist bicycles.
Hehe... and ANOTHER win for the CERO One... 8)

E bikes are available to rent here and now.

The article refers to some ebikes as little motorcycles.

LimeBike Presses City to Enforce Dockless Mobility Policies as Competition With Bird Escalates:

Starts:
LimeBike, the California-based dockless bicycle and scooter startup, has sent a letter to Austin city officials and council members criticizing the city’s stance in allowing Bird to deploy its electric scooters on Austin streets and sidewalks.

“…we cannot ignore the competitive challenge that Bird’s launch in Austin is to our core business model of providing dock-free mobility to solve urban transportation challenges,” the letter obtained by Austin Inno from LimeBike co-founder and CEO Toby Sun reads. “As such, we are considering our next steps as a company if the City of Austin is unable to vigorously enforce its dock-free mobility policies.”

City transportation officials confirmed that they received the letter, and they’re planning to discuss next steps with council members at a mobility committee meeting on Tuesday at City Hall.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press is a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is distributed in the metropolitan Chattanooga region of southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia. It is one of Tennessee's major newspapers...

Fort Oglethorpe is a city predominantly in Catoosa County with some portions in Walker County in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 9,263. It is part of the Chattanooga, TN–GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Fort Oglethorpe small business owner reliving glory days, improving health through cycling adventures:
http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/loca ... ng/468313/

Starts:
A Fort Oglethorpe restaurant owner is reliving some old adventures with his cousin while improving his health and promoting another local business.

Jack Goodlet, 68, had ballooned to nearly 260 pounds at the beginning of 2017. Years of not being physically active were beginning to take their toll. The owner of Park Place Restaurant was aging, and he wanted to avoid major medical problems. He was ready to take control of his health and ensure that he lived a long, happy life. For that, he turned to his cousin, Chattanooga State professor Cliff Goodlet — and cycling.
Includes:
Jack Goodlet has been riding an electric bike, a bicycle with an electric motor that can be activated to assist riders. He said he wouldn't be able to take the trips if it weren't for that assist, and in turn, that decision led to a key partnership with the local bike shop, Battlefield Outdoors.

During the trips, which Cliff Gloodlet writes about on his blog, the duo has been touting the bikes and the local bike shop. That, in part, helped lead to a partnership. The shop is now a certified Petego retailer and is able to sell the electric bikes there.
... and ends:
"Jack, oh my goodness, he's been incredibly helpful," said Pat Bridges, who works at Battlefield Outdoors. "We wouldn't have Petego if it wasn't for him."

Odd. All this time I've been calling them "Pedego"... and even Battlefield Bicycles in Fort Oglethorpe Georgia still calls `em "Pedego"... Wierd. Maybe a "pet" name...

I reviewed an electric bike once in the 90s, before anyone discovered intuitive software. Working out how to turn it on and off was way beyond anything I’d picked up from a basic humanities education and it was like a high-intensity, unwanted brain workout accompanied by a real fear of death. Everything has changed. The Raleigh Mustang Comp controls are very obvious, the weight is greater than a regular racer yet it’s hardly a moped, but most of all, it’s no longer an energy boost for the tired commuter; it’s a training aid. You pedal for as long as you’re able, and kick the motor in only when you have to. It doesn’t go madly fast — about 22km/h unless you’re determined – but it feels like flying.

Every now and then the esteemed members of the Davis City Council come up with a solution to a problem I didn’t know existed.

Such was my reaction when I saw the headline “City Council OKs bike share ordinance” over Anne Ternus-Bellamy’s front-page piece in The Enterprise the other day.

I first heard the term “bike share” years ago, when my ’56 Schwinn was stolen from our Davis front porch and my dad discovered it several days later parked in front of a fraternity house near the UC Davis campus.

Ends:
“Concerns remain over a couple of issues — including the age and weight limits set by JUMP. Users must be 18 or over and weigh under 210 pounds, eliminating a lot of people who might otherwise use the bikes.”

Yeah, like the entire Aggie football team. Not to mention 90 percent of the high schoolers in town.

Doesn’t it make sense that those who exceed 210 pounds (see photo above) might be the very folks who could use a bit of electric assist as they peddle happily to Fluffy Donut for some maple bar madness?

JUMP. Electric assist. The bicycle share brotherhood. Coming soon to a bike lane near you.

Jalopnik is a news and opinion website about cars, the automotive industry, racing, transportation, airplanes, technology, motorcycles and much more, like maybe those new battery-powered bicycle thingees. Maybe.
I Tried San Francisco's Electric Scooter Share And It Was A Nightmare:
https://jalopnik.com/i-tried-san-franci ... 1825275906

Starts:
Someone—Bird founder Travis VanderZanden, formerly of Uber—decided it was a great idea to litter the streets of San Francisco with tiny electric-driven scooters. He raised $300 million to put these tiny EVs on street corners. Speaking to a friend who lives in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, this was seemingly a surprise to everyone in the city, “I just woke up one morning, and these scooters were everywhere.” I tried it, and if this is the future of mobility, count me out.
Darned if I could find where to fill the gas tank.

The Register-Guard is a daily newspaper in the western United States, published in Eugene, Oregon. As of 2016, it has a circulation of around 43,000 Monday through Friday, around 47,000 on Saturday, and a little under 50,000 on Sunday.
... and is famous in Turkey...
Since June 17, 2008, by court order, access to the website of The Register-Guard has been blocked in Turkey.

Oregon State Parks may allow electric bicycles on state beaches, including about 30 miles in Lane County:
http://registerguard.com/rg/news/local/ ... /story.csp

Starts:
Electric bicycles would be allowed on Oregon beaches as soon as this summer, under a proposal by the state.

Oregon State Parks’ rule changes would permit e-bikes on the sand between the low-tide waterline and vegetation line along portions of the coast, according to Katie Gauthier, legislative and policy coordinator for the state agency. A push by e-bike riders has prompted Oregon State Parks to clarify which of its trails, as well as beaches, are open for e-bikes.
"A push by e-bike riders"... Interesting... :)

Things heating up in Prague...

(They say:)
We provide information on entertainment and ebikes, culture, dining, shopping, business, accommodation, real estate, education, health, and travel, and aim to cover all aspects of life in and around Prague.
Bicycle ban in center starts soon
("Prague 1 is blocking bikes from pedestrian zones as of April 26"):
https://prague.tv/en/s72/Directory/c207 ... tarts-soon

Starts:
A controversial plan to keep bicycles out of pedestrian zones in Prague 1 during business hours is set to take effect April 26. The time for public comments has closed, and the district decided not to take any action on them. The move can still be overturned in the courts after a review if somebody sues to block the ban.

The Prague 1 Town Hall claims the ban is to protect the safety of pedestrians, but critics point out that accidents involving bikes have been rare.
Includes:
Ever since a ban on Segways took effect in much of the city center at the end of 2016. tours using bicycles, electric bicycles and fat-wheeled scooters have filled the pedestrian zones in the main sightseeing areas.
Will fears and ignorance rule? Stay tuned to ES TV Newz...

The Awesomer is a daily blog filled with awesome stuff like ebikes for awesome people. Initially conceptualized as a gadget shopping blog, it’s now more or less a massive repository for whatever we find interesting. We’re like that closet that you throw everything into, albeit a bit more organized, and minus the ratty tee you’ve worn since freshman year.
... and:
Curating every post by hand is time consuming, but it’s paid off: since launching in August 2008, The Awesomer is now averaging nearly 5 million pageviews and 2 million visits per month, with an exceptionally high repeat visitation and time on site. 89% of our visitors are male, 47% are between the ages of 18-34, and 70% are college or grad school educated.(Stats as of June 2014).
Bosch e-Bike PowerTube 500

Starts:
In their quest to make electric bikes even more convenient and stylish Bosch created a compact (13.7″ x 3.3″ x 2.6″) and lightweight (6.2 lb) power pack which can be housed inside a bike frame. New bikes using the PowerTube 500 are headed to dealers this Summer.

Mountain Bike Rider magazine
... from the UK...

Actually, THIS is the lightest mountain bike in the world
("How does 4.5kg for a complete bike sound?"):
http://www.mbr.co.uk/news/bike_news/lig ... ike-373960

Starts:
It looks like the honours for lightest mountain bike in the world might actually lie at the door of one Seb K.

It seems we opened up a can of worms by featuring Gustav’s über light Scott builds recently. It seems that these are not the lightest mountain bikes in the world, just probably the lightest 29ers in the world. Seb K, just like Gustav, is pretty well known in the world of the weight weenie and over the past few years has been churning out some crazily light builds.
Includes:
Talk us through some of your other bikes, as this isn’t your only build. Do you have anything more appropriate for offroad use?

Seb: I also have an electric fat bike that has had a ton of work including a carbon fork, carbon railed saddle with built in elastomers and shortened BB shell to allow the use of a Shimano Saint crankset.
... and:
Then there’s my fully rigid SingleSpeed electric bike with a very custom full titanium freewheel (screw thread) and all Ti nitride coated, shortened wiring, titanium blue axle nuts, aluminium axle spacers, MCFK seatpost, Tune Alcantara Komm Vor + saddle, magnesium pedals machined down with full Ti Nitride titanium axle further hollowed, Middleburn cranks, custom blue chain tensioner with blue ceramic tension jockey wheel, Magura MT8 brake with custom gold connector fixings, custom white Extralite grips machined down in the lathe (right side shorter to accommodate the throttle), Easton carbon handlebar, Tubolito tubes, re-laced rear wheel, front Easton Haven wheel and all cable guides machined off the frame then primed and painted .
(For the Techno-Weenie is all of us.)

Fantic USA Announces Partnership with GNCC Series:

Starts:
SAUSALITO, Calif. — Fantic USA is proud to announce a partnership with Racer Productions, organizer of the Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) for the 2018 season. Fantic USA will display and activate with MotoTees at each round, providing demo bikes for racers and fans to test out their industry-leading e-bikes before purchase. The bikes will be on hand at the upcoming Camp Coker Bullet GNCC in Society Hill, South Carolina, from April 21-22.
Hehe... and looking at the Fantic Motor S.r.l. site:
http://fantic-bikes.com/en/
Dr. Mario Agrati, of Agrati Garelli from Monticello Brianza, breaks away from their family business to join Henry Keppel, who was responsible for Foreign Sales at Garelli. Together they start a company that produces mini-bikes, go-karts and enduro bikes, for the American market. The company name is Fantic Motor and in 1968 it started in Barzago.
Basically, Italian motorbike company has "seen the light".

The Globe and Mail, founded in 1844, is Canada's foremost news media company and a part of Canada’s fabric. We cover events that have changed our nation like ebikes as well as the day-to-day happenings that continue to shape us as a country.
Hello, spring? Are you there? Where to find some heat and sun right now:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/tr ... ?cmpid=rss

Starts:
Spring seems to be skipping 2018 in Canada. A bit disappointing for those who’d been looking forward to doing anything outdoors during March and April. And while it might feel like the entire world is sitting under a shroud of overcast, believe it or not, there are places where the sun is actually shining right now. Many of which are just a short plane ride away. Here are five spots where you can get a quick weekend escape to sunshine, and still be back to bone-chilling temperatures and grey skies by Monday morning.
Includes: Orange County, Calif.
... and:
For a real hidden gem head inland to Irvine, where you can bicycle through picturesque California hills, with sweeping views of canyons and rivers. If you’re not super fit, Pedego bike tours offers electric-bicycle tours with all the nature and a lot less work, and might even give you beer for your effort at the end. It’s also home to one of Orange County’s highest rooftop bars at the brand-new Marriott Irvine Spectrum.
