So I bought a Dutch Fat Bike from Switzz Bikes!

Fat 8.1 specs:
Wheels 26"
Tires: Kenda Juggernaut Sport 26″x4.00
Frame: Aluminium 6061
Disc Brakes: Tektro Aquila Mechanical Disc
Gears: 8 Speed Shimano Clarius
Chain: KMC -72
Cassette: 8 Speed HG41

Dropout / HUB spacing / Axel for rear wheel: 197mm and Switzz says I need 220mm!
Bracket for midmotor: 120mm

So I bought the Fatbike kit from www.future-bike.it

500 W option with 120mm bracket
Protection cage for motor
48V 17Ah battery in bottle form which can be removed
Race Control Display type VLCD6
Metal Gearings as standard
Speed sensor
42T with 10mm offset (installed this one)
42T standard
32T race torque thing I will never use...

Maxspeed is around 40km/h, than I pedal so fast the motor stops assisting...
I can really climb hard with this bike! So far one big LOVE for this built!
I did a test ride on a 18km technical, steep short climbing MTB track in The Netherlands and it was awesome!

Installation took some time to figure it all out and some issues:
-Battery could only be mounted upside down on two M5 bolts (so far no problems, but double check to lock the battery before riding)
-Speedsensor did not work but found some strong neodymium magnets which fixed the distance problem
-Motor would rest on a part sticking out from the motor on the left so I bought a wedge to fit in the middle
-The bolt which should fit on top did not fit because of the big diameter of my frame. I just did not use it....

Electric Rat Fink first gen

-Bafang BBSHD
-Lekkie Bling Ring 42
-Iron-cross pedals with spikes.
-Shimano CN-HG71 6-8speed chain 132Links + about a foot from an old chain I had laying around.
-Alfine 8 igh with roller brake put on a 24" rim.
-Boxkars 4" hot rod suicide-shifter.
-Locally manufactured eccentric bottom bracket adapter. (Why is there no large scale production on those adapters for American style bottom brackets?!?)

-Brooks England B-33 saddle.

-Apart from those mods the bike is original as of European standard in 2004.
That's why I've got a v brake up front which is well needed.

Winter setup includes
-Nokian Extrem 296 26" * 2.125" studded tire up front and a Berm Master 24"*3" in the back.
-Snowboard rack/kickstand.

Photos are a little mixed up but you get the picture.

Have you tried putting the motor inside of the frame? If that fits it's more protected.

I definitely had that in mind while going through the build in my head.
The angel of the frame turned out to be a little bit to sharp for the motor-housing to fit that way so I went with the second best position.

Cyclone 3000, 52V 30Ah battery. Got working handlebar control lights, horn, even figured out how to get brake light using MOSFET and some spare AA batteries. 2.3kW on V-Brakes and feeling fine.

"Before" being before this particular upgrade set:

Salsa Fargo Rival XS frame Bafang BBSHD with Lekkie 42T, Hailong battery 14S4P Panasonic GA cells

the XS frame meant little, if no clearance to put the Hailong battery case, I achieved this by drilling the aluminium plate, one for the bolt on the bottom and for the top bolt, I dremmeled 2 additional areas to fit the steel clamp, which would serve as the top second bolt that would normally go on the bottle cage area. See the attached picture, green drawing shows where I dremmeled the plate.

To insert the battery, I would tighten the bottom bolt and leave a slight angle to insert the battery, then rotate back to where it would sit. Then, tighten the steel clamp around a rubber tube to avoid scratching the frame.

It actually worked really good with minimal side to side play of the battery. I bought a tube / steel clamp combo from Home depot. see attached pictures.

I had to use 2 x 2mm spacers to clear chainstays.

I have a Lekkie 42T crank, I had to add 3 additional links on the stock chain, it worked well with the 11 speed drive train (though I wish it had 8 speed instead of 11, certainly don't need all those with the BBSHD)

Finally, the brake sensors where just hot glued to the STI shifters.

I still haven't figured out where to put the throttle and also I need to install gear sensors.

I thought I would share with you this project, hopefully it helps someone here in the forum.

Aesthetics? There are pearls among the oysters, but you have to dig for them. I have asked permission from the builders to feature them, and here is an index, 90% found on ES

To be fair, the vast majority of posts are not about "how can I make my bike look nice?", I think that part is fairly easy among the type of people who frequent the DIY forums. The part that is the most often shared information is "What are the newest options, and how do I get them to work?" Just my opinion....

There have definitely been a few bikes i've seen on here that have blown me away. And i've been obsessed with riding and building bikes for the last 16 years so it takes quite a bit for me to be impressed.

That said this forum is a stark contrast from mountain bike forums i've been on where people place looking "cool" just as important, if not more important then actual riding :lol:
