My Bafang Ultra Mountain Bike! Frey AM1000

Still no 27.5+ bike, the HT1000 won't take a 27.5+ wheel, and it doesn't sound like one that will is being made. Months of waiting for nothing. . .

I have 27.5 x 3.0 installed from Frey on my AM1000.

what do you refer to by 27.5+? am1000 takes 27.5x3.0 from what I understand.

No, I mean the HT1000 will not, the AM1000 does.

There was some talk on this thread of the hardtail, so in my disappointment at the news that I had waited for months for nothing, I posted to this one and the other thread that is for the HT1000.

no bike for me. . . :(

I want this bike and like this color. Tax to Norway is high + 25%, total price 4500 USD.
Or this with same motor.

Normally 27.5 plus tires fit on a 29 bike, you just need another set of wheels

It's my understanding at the moment that will not take a plus size 27.5 wheel, a standard 27.5 would likely fit. I've asked Ivy to clarify the dropout width.

I hope I'm wrong about it not fitting a plus size, I really like the bike and would like to own one.

I am pretty sure that Frey announced that the hardtail was available with 27.5 plus wheels and would fit up to a 2.8 inch wide tire....
I guess we will know when they confirm.

Good luck,
Lorrin

2000 km review

So I've been riding the am1000 for about 2000 km by now during summer/autumn, most of my riding is on trails, downhill, and rocky terrain with lots of roots. Making sure that no bolts shake loose or snap in half was the main concern.

All in all, I can say that a 66km range is to be expected (910 Wh 52v battery version) averaging 27 km/h (mode 1 - 2). While, on the other hand, the battery can be drained within an hour of explosive use (mode 4 - 5). An hour of 45 - 50 km/h on the flat, or an hour bombing up and down the mountainside with 30 km/h on average. The bike eats rear tires for breakfast in the latter.

The best thing I did for the bike was to use 1.5metre of velcro to strap the battery down and using 150 mm cranks to keep pedaling on tricky parts. The bike is a hell lot of fun and a good workout tool, it makes you, and enables you, to cycle daily. I tend to cycle around midnight a lot.

In terms of performance, the added weight is making it a nice downhill bike, while the motor is powerful enough that you don't feel it when pedaling up. If you want, you top 3 all the trails around your house on apps like Strava, even downhill e.g. without the motor assist.

Good value for money.

nice update Hardcore :) Where did you get the 150mm cranks? That has to be the worst aspect of the bike, scraping the cranks on everything.

Totally agree it chews through rear tyres, I have rotated mine once and almost to the point of doing it again!

Certainly keep check on those suspension bolts and screws, especially the 2 just back from the rear shock, found one hanging on by a few threads recently, even after tightening it. Thinking some threadlock is in order there.

Another downside is the massive display and thumb control. Hate to say it but something smaller would be much nicer, it's just too easy to hit and damage them on tight trails. Specialised have this perfected.

Strava is both fun and a curse, the bike annoys people with some of the partial section times it gets, it's just so damned quick on the less technical parts.

I got some unicycle cranks to be able to go this low. I tried 127, 138, 150, 160, 165, and the original and loved 150.

In terms of the display, I was thinking of getting an eggrider v2 display, which is extremely small. And some even hide it under the seat post because, in all honesty, one does not need to look at it whilst on the trials.

I tend to put my Strava times not on the public leaderboards because of this. Even though Switzerland allows 500W e-bikes.

What i don't understand is that the AM1000 is being sold through different shops.

https://www.cinlinebike.com/product/mountain-electric-bike/

i've been told from this company that cinline and frey is the same company only that frey is their highline products. but why does frey have a own internet site then?

been sent lots of pictures from customer bikes etc and it seems legit but i'm just very confused about which is what and so on.

VAT is high everywhere in Scandinavia and EU.
I live in Estonia, maybe with shared transport the total price will be lower. I guess 800$ is just for air transport. Maybe sea transport has the same price, but more bikes can be shipped.

I might be interested in joint purchase if shipping costs would be lower

Anyone else disgusted by the rear thru-axle supplied on the bike? I couldn't get it out - thought I was an idiot and missing something obvious - never seen a quick lock that comes apart when unlocked and offers no ability to remove the axle. Took to the local LBS and asked what I was doing wrong. The mechanic looked at it as it fell apart in his hand in disbelief - he couldn't restrain himself from voicing his total disgust - had to get vice grips to screw out the axle (the only other solution was to remove the derailleur and remove from the drive side, which is simply idiotic). He ordered a proper thru-axle and all is well. But Gawd Almighty, what is Frey doing with such crap on a $4K bike?

I have been scraping my cranks too. I may have to look into crankarms.

Thanks everyone for all the great info here. My buddy and I just received our Frey AM1000s with the 52v 17ah battery. I did tons of online research before I pulled the trigger, so figured I should put in my opinions in hopes of helping others.

Besides the Frey AM1000, I also ride a BBSHD 48v on an old Specialized FSR Enduro full suspension and a Specialized Carbon Evo FSR (no motor). I am a pretty aggressive rider and was concerned about the FREY being trail capable (not just a commuter).

POWER:
In comparison to the BBSHD, the power of the FREY seems about the same, but having the torque sensor is SO much better!

SIZING/WEIGHT:
The bikes are HUGE. I ordered the medium, and it is quite large. Definitely do not go up a size when ordering. It is also heavy. we had to put my buddy's on his roof top Yakima, and it took both of us! With that said, the weight is not an issue when riding. It feels very solid and the motor counteracts the weight, but I would not want to drain the battery and pedal that home w/o a motor.

SUSPENSION:
The Lyric / Deluxe fork/shock setup is nice. Feels similar if not softer than my Fox 32 on my Evo. I was careful to set the sag at 25%/30% respectively and it performed well. I did come very close (1/4 inch) to bottoming out both on some drops, so may need to up the sag a bit or put in one of the Lyric tokens. Very plush and confidence inspiring, especially with the fat 2.8 tires. The headtube angle is quite slack, so, with the dropper down, and a very short stem, it is quite DH feeling, which again, with the 160 lyric / deluxe and fatty tires, aids the confidence.

BUILD:
My initial impressions on the build is good. one bike was in perfect shape, the other had a slightly bent out of true rear wheel and the derailler hanger was bent, so it looks like the box was dropped in shipment causing this. We ordered 2 extra hangers, so could fix it. The wheel is not bad, but will need to get trued. We ordered with the headlights wired. This is cool, but they are hardwired, no quick-connector and the mount to the handlebars is a cheap plastic clip that broke on one bike, and is sloppy on the other. we will be modifying this so it is more solidly mounted and more flush (not sticking up so high). It also came with a rear light. We didn't ask for this, but there it is.I usually use a flasher dot light below seat, but this light is pretty cool. it works as a brake light when headlights are lights are off (When the headlights turn on, via the light sensor or by use of control pad, the tail light is solid; no actuation with brakes). We checked torque on everything and it seems ok so far. The rear through axle handle wiggles a bit and makes noise. I can confirm the seat tube is now 31.6. Droppers can be internally routed, but it takes some work to thread the cable in the downtube then up the seat tube. We did it on 2 bikes, so definitely can be done. There are also in tube routing in the horizontal tube to route an external dropper cable. That would be much easier, but look less clean. The chainring is a 130 bcd. The stock chanring is a 44t NW steel ring. The cranks are too long. Hit on everything. I will have to get shorter ones.

MODS:
I switched to a left thumb push throttle and it fits the bike much better IMO. (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/8FUN-bbs01-bbs02-bbshd-left-hand-thumb-throttle/32853544824.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.1cd84c4dUCnsBH). The tires come with schrader valves. I had anticipated presta, and was going to try to convert to tubeless, but had to order new stems. I will update if the conversion works once i get those. I could not find if anyone could do it and rims do not say if they are tubeless ready. I have successfully converted others (gorilla tape / valve / sealant) successfully. I will update on this.

USA CUSTOMS:
we were very concerned about the new 25% tariffs on ebikes. FREY PAID ALL CUSTOMS AND FEES. THE PRICE THEY GIVE YOU COVERS ALL CUSTOMS AND FEES. THIS IS ALL YOU PAY. This was a big deal for me. I was concerned that I would have to pay the 25% customs fees, but IVY was very good in assuring me FREY covers all of this, which they did. If you are like me and were holding off ordering due to fear of US customs / ebike tariffs, dont worry.

I could have sworn there used to be a "hide from leader board" option. I cant find it now in my settings. I guess I will stay private so as to not piss off my anti-e-bike buddys.

I converted tires to tubeless using gorilla tape/valve/sealant - no issues so far - installed Vitoria Airliner in rear tire.

I just got rid of my throttle - almost never used it - it placed the level control annoyingly out of reach of my thumb - was always having to search for it at inopportune times. Removing the throttle puts the control right where it should be next to the grip - however, wish the up-down level control was a bit more tactile - doesn't always respond even when I feel it click with my thumb.

I didn't want hard-wired lights - figured if I needed them, it's easy enough to clamp on aftermarket lights. Didn't want to smash hard-wired lights the first time I crashed anyway.

I use a Magura Vyron wireless dropper to avoid hassle of running cables.

cool. I had not heard of the vitoria airliner before. interesting. good to hear about the tubeless! Lights are a bit of a gimik. I cut the wire and put on a connector so i can remove it if i want to.

Do you feel the 48v BBSHD is similar powerful to the 52v Ultra?
If so, that is a bit dissapointing...

It might be a bit more power, but not drastically so. That is not a bad thing. I can use only throttle uphill with enough seed to jump (uphill)! Awesome feeling. It has plenty of power.

yep, these "The Robert Axle Project" axles are really cool...i ordered directly at their website, very smooth transaction.

i also wanted the front axle for my Rockshox Yari, so i ordered this set :

Lightning Bolt-on Axle - Front 15 mm x 158 mm x 1.5 Thread 1 $ 42.00 (LIG503)
Lightning Bolt-on Axle - Rear 12 mm x 178 mm x 1.5 Thread 1 $ 48.00 (LIG614)
