N.E.S.E. the no solder module

First time I've tried printing any of these and overall...meh? The parts fit and I think it'll work, but I have a lot more tuning to do. I have to do too much cleanup from retractions right now. The design is really nice, but I do have one question: How do you keep from breaking off the little wings on the top sides of the base? They are really thin and mine just popped right off. The ones on the cover were fine. See picture.

Also, I am building these for a race mini moto right now, but may have a commercial use opportunity later. Are you open to talking about commercial licensing? It'd be for the battery for a product I'm trying to get to market. Feel free to PM.

Couple possible reasons for them braking off easy:
Printing too cold
Damp filament
Also, that part of base is weak alone. When you insert tabs and cells, tab suports it from inside. It basically acts like spacer, and all forces are bared by the lid.
 
I don't *think* it was too cold, but maybe. I tried printing in ABS today and it did MUCH better overall, but I do have some moisture in the filament I need to bake out before doing one for real.

The space for battery is 700mm * 155mm * 8mm

Can your kit be up to the task for a big 15s battery?

I'm thinking of 14p15s pack. So I'd combine your 7p to 14p by putting 2 together and make the pack with 30 * 7p to get my pack.

Would that work?

Thanks do you know the price for a kit? And I've seen you mentioning providing enclosure. Would you provide as well?
 
All prices are on the website. There are other relevant components that you might want or not. I do not sell enclosures as it is too custom of a part to have stock.
 
I finally got to read this and I would like to order. Let me be clear: You only supply the metal parts and we need to get the plastic enclosures 3-d printed at a place of our choosing (like Shapeways)? You do not 3-d print yourself.

I am having difficulty printing these enclosures. I am trying to print the 8p version using the recommended settings. When I get the last cell into the holder, it always pops another cell out.

The metal hardware has not arrived yet, so I am testing the fit without them if that makes a difference.

Also, they seem very thin and flexible, has increasing the infill from 5% ever helped with print strength?

agniusm, do you have any tips or tricks for printing these? I am using a stock ender 3 for the print. Are there any printer upgrades that you think would be helpful for printing these cases?

If you get decent quality, you should not need anything. I print them at 0 infill. You need 4 perimeters 5 bottom layers and 6 top layers. You need to check an option to fill thin gaps. It depends on slicer how its called. If cell is popping out, print 20x20x20mm test cube and see if your printer prints dimentionally correct. You can also uniformly scale 8p enclosure by 1-3%. I have made them with tight tolerances so in times some cells could pop out as their diameter varies by small amount which is enough. But they are snug by default.
 
agniusm, thanks for the reply. I have adjusted all of the settings except for Perimeter layers as I cannot find this setting in Cura.

Does anyone have any idea if this setting could be called something else?

edit - I see a setting for # of walls. I wonder if this is the same as perimeter layers.
 
First, thank you so much for the design of the decade. I was about to give up & buy a spot welder.

Despite 2 years of engineering school (before a Macintosh technician).. I’m still not an expert on building my first bicycle pack for my Lee Iacocca Ebike.

Two questions:
1-I am guessing half of us are using used cells. This poses a small risk (numbers wise) but can be fatal if you are the unlucky one in a thousand. Does each cell need to have fusing of some type or do most cells have a thermal cut off built in. Thus making a bms per parallel pack good enough? (Most my cells are from laptops & ryobi tool packs.)

2-Have you ever considered adding cell level fusing to your amazing design? Like the link below?

I may even consider using the below on the 8p model & cutting it down to fit inside of it. But either way I will be buying your kits and promoting them for sure!

I always strongly advise on using brand new cells from reputable supplier. Pressure design relies on good contact and having cleaned second hand cells does not give you that fully. Its a risk where least you could loose is your property and worst, yours or your families life.
The link you provided is very thin nickel tabs for spotwelding, usually 0.15mm. My tabs are 0.6mm copper. It has bumps and is rigid not to collapse under pressure. Its not possible to make it work. I thought about making it compatible with fuses and its possible but it adds to overall width 13-20mm. Its a substantial amount.
If you use genuine new cells there is very little risk involved to need a fuse. Even medical packs don't have them. To add to this, laptop cells are good to 0.5C. They were not meant for high discharge so 8P would only give you 8A discharge with 2Ah cells safely. It will need 3 x 8P modules to do meaningful currents at the low end.
