While Adam Smith got plenty right, I don't think he could have predicted that the tragedy of the commons would become a global phenomena. At a time when the oceans were teeming with fish, forests full of trees and seemingly abundant coal and coke, many of his prescriptions were well suited.

I also don't think he expected CEO salaries to be 500 times that of the base worker, or that slavery would be a major driver of economic growth (however it's presented, be it mortgage-tied wage slaves today, or Blackbirds of the 1880s).

I'm not a big fan of Adam Smithian free market economics either but I guess the article should have said EVEN Adam Smith had thought about the limits to growth on a finite planet.
