Retirement Time

Went up on South Main Divide Road today to get a piece of furniture for my wife’s B-day. Visibility at times less than a mile due to dust and smoke from the many fires and windy dry weather. Hemet Ryan Field busy staging water dropping aircraft, so much so that planes on approach had to go around a few times before being able to land.
Fires visible as white spots in this satellite view:

Staying inside as much as possible today due to poor air quality.

Stopped @ Panera for some soup and a sandwich. Ate it before entering the place when I tripped and fell on an unusually high curb out front. Not hurt bad because I rolled as I hit the sidewalk, but had to scrub a couple of road rash toes with a toothbrush.
Funny thing was that it was next door to the dentist office where my daughter is going to have her wisdom teeth pulled so I feel worse for her.
Glad that the hours at work are slower now, it’s likely to get much busier as Christmas season picks up.

A mosquito was biting me almost every night. Finally got it cornered in the bathroom. Saw it on the faucet and I thought it was an ant, but it went airborne and when I took a swipe at it went down somewhere. Hopefully I got that bloodsucker.

Mosquito confirmed kill.
Thought this was funny, seven (count ‘em; 7) people sighted at HV Mall. What with Hobby Lobby as an anchor store, that boat’s not going anywhere.

PeanutButter does that too, but it's quite different, since he's well over 100lbs (120? 130? more?), and taller than even Kirin.... (when he stands on his back legs he could easily put paws on top of the fridge, or higher)

And he has no idea how big he is....

Time to start looking into Social Security and Medicare, turning 65 in eight months. Anyone who has been there have any tips? Already have health insurance through OPM retirement. Right now all the Open Season TV ads nauseate me. :?

Saw a Buffalo (Bison) this evening on the way to Game Stop. I knew that there are some on the Soboba Indian Reservation but was surprised to learn that they were this close to town, just five minutes from here. 8)

Another one in the same area as the last one. Hope they catch the culprit.
Heard on the radio news that they caught the guy. :D

Drummer friend from grade school dropped in on his way home from San Diego. Took him up to Simpson Park for a nice view of the IE and the snow from Saddleback to Tahquitz peak. Place was deserted except for a couple of hikers and one MTB rider. Colder weather means no rattlesnake danger, signs warning of poisonous snakes everywhere. The yearly Ramona Event down below the park has problems due to the kids hiding from the audience behind boulders during the play.

We’re all down with the grippe, flu shot helping a little this year. Wheezing sounds like a clicking Geiger Counter mixed with an old squeaky windmill. Dry cough is the worst part and chills.

Record warm temps today in the mid 80’s F. :D Took advantage of this by planting bare-root Double Delight roses by the front porch. Hope to establish ground cover around them to hold the soil before next rainy season.

Trying to get an appointment with the Social Security office was a joke. Phone waiting time of 59 minutes probably means over an hour and I never know if I’ll have the day off. So this morning I went there 45 minutes early and there were 25 people in line outside. By 9:00am when they opened there was at least 100 people in line behind me.
Glad I got there early, was out in less than an hour. :)

Checking a couple of nurseries for lampranthus productus to put around the new roses. Not flowering yet, want to get the right color.

Planted ground cover from a flat after pruning remaining roses in the front yard. Soil looks good with lots of earthworms and good drainage.
The back yard lawn needs a little more work and there’s quite a few leaves from the recent windy weather. :x
Only a half a dozen roses to prune out back. I hate to use weed and feed on the lawn because of Oliver. Dichondra would be the ideal lawn replacement but is expensive to establish and maintain. Lots of folks install plastic grass but I don’t like it. Bare dirt not going to happen.

Got my Medicare card, coverage starts June 1st. Lots of foxtails and dandelions coming up with the recent rain.
Got some bath tissue today, still need eggs. That’s about it, just in case we get quarantined.

Got a check in the mailbox from Publishers Clearinghouse and a letter saying that I won ten dollars. Went down to Wells Fargo to see if it was real and they cashed it! :p Was feeling rather chipper until I mentioned it to a lady at work and she said that she won a hundred dollars from them.
