Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist who drew overly-elaborate contraptions that were much more complex than neccessary in order to perfrom a simple task.

paper bag would not hold water unless coated. :D

Magnifying glass would not burn hole in bag as long as there is water in it. :D :D

Nice critique,It was HUMOR.people in the thirties laughed wthout worrying about the tecnicalities.

In looking up info and a pic for this thread, I was suprised to find out most of his cartoons had a seed of satire and were making fun of how government operates. A friend sent me the window blinds video, and I thought there must be many young posters who've never heard of RG, and may have not seen these videos yet...harmless fun.

The windows blinds is freakin INSANE toooooo much time on there hands but very impressive none the less...After seeing LiveForPhysics efforts with that physics game he posted awhile back i reckon he could come up with some pretty cool "Rube Goldberg" contraptions!

The Honda ad also screened here in OZ...

RG was either the inspiration or the actual author for the famous and memorable contraptions used in the Tom and Jerry cartoons... overly complicated, psuedo functional but freakin hilarious!

This is also how an old water-wheel/steam-engine hammer-mill crushes ore from big rocks into small one. Its how cams were invented long before cars.

One of the most enjoyable 3-minutes and 54-second events I've had in quite a while (insert joke here about double-entendre that involves insertion)

One from Mythbusters.
