Need a replacement for my Ping

A layer of cork sheet at about 1/4 inch thick is a good dampening material - which I use in my pack.
Assuming you charge every 20 miles, that's only 250 cycles you had on your Ping. Significantly lower than the claimed 1000+.

I was using that interlocking foam they sell at Costco for playrooms and such. Tried to make it tight enough that the pack wouldn't move around. Even so, the constant jarrring somehow wore down the cells.

Lots of rubbing goes on inside the battery bag or box. Hopefully the shrink wrap used now will help with that vs the duct tape that was on the early packs.

That's why I make the super tight fitting inner boxes custom fit to my pings. There is just no movement at all, and all the rubbing goes on on the outside of the tight box. I have some areas on ping 1 that rubbed quite a bit of the aluminum box away, but remove the battery, and the duct tape still looks cherry.

On some nicad packs I have, it didn't take long to start putting some serious rub marks on the cell cans. I didn't protect them so good, and quickly realized I needed to do more, even with metal canned cells.

Payment sent for the Headway. Can't wait.

Which website did you order, I wanna get some headway pack. Let me know thanks

I just received a quote from Michelle for the 48V 20ah Headway Pack and charger, $530 + $144 shipping. Hope she is legitimate.

Well, it looks like that isn't going to work...

Any other suggestions?

Matter pending.

snowranger:
We seem to be in a similar circumstance(similar bikes too :D ). My 48v 20Ah ping is starting to go bad(my fault) and I need a new solution as well.

I decided to go the lipo route, and am using GGoodrum and Fetchers LVC boards and charge controller. You might want to look into that. Are you looking to replace the ping or upgrade to a higher voltage? What is your budget, technical level, time frame ect...

Nomad,

I am looking for an equivalent battery, and Lipo is not out of the question. I just don't have any experience using this format. Would two 6s in series be equivalent? Can you give me a list of components that would fit the bill?

Budget< $1000
Technical level : Can follow instructions and solder.
Time frame: Few weeks.

Sure

If you go the lipo route there are a few choices you have to make up front.
a 13s-14s lipo is pretty much equal to 16s lifepo4(48v ping), however most lipo packs(and pack building accessories) come in 5s or 6s configurations. So you can either go a little lower with 12s (2 6s packs) or a little higher with 15s(3 5s packs). The caps in 48v controllers are usually rated to 63v, which is the 15s packs hot off the charger voltage. I choose to go a little higher and got 9 5s 5ah packs to make a 55v 15Ah pack.
Let me know what you would want to do, since everything else depends on that.

Just to give you an idea on cost, with everything my 55v 15Ah pack (830ish Wh) will cost me about 850$
9 5s 25c packs 46$ each+(102$ shipping), battery medic 23$, wire 3$, connectors 6$, meanwell power supplies 60$(you might be able to use your ping charger instead, by upping the voltage), 3 LVC/HVC units 48 $ each, charge controller 85$.

15s seems reasonable.

Ok then here's what you would need.

If you want 15Ah get 9, 20Ah get 12

Your ping charger might be adjustable, but meanwell power supplies are the best.
You'll need some combination in series to get 63v for the charge, I actually am planning a 74v pack so my meanwells (2 48v SP 320's) are for that, I am going to use my 5 amp ping charger in the meantime.

It is supposedly on the way. I'll update with details later.

Thats the thing...you order from china you are taking your chances...you really could score big...but beware of alibaba rip offs....deals too be too good etc.

I think this headway deal is on the fence...sounds like it could go either way...the deal does not sound that outrageous..headway pack for 500 plus shipping.

But if it pays off...snowranger can make a lot of money selling those packs if he doesnt give up his source :)

If he gets ripped off...oh well..black list the *** and keep searching for that rainbow in china for the ultimate supply of lithium nirvana.

I paid with a credit card through paypal. I figure I have two lines of defense. We'll see.

We should add michelle@xhnykj.cn to the avoid list. Not only did she not deliver anything, she gave me a fake tracking number.

I'm still hunting for a replacement. Anyone buy a Juiced Riders pack?

Edit - The jury is out on this one. After she ceased communication, I did a credit card chargeback. To my surprise, a package delivery attempt was made almost 2 weeks later. Unfortunately, I had to refuse delivery because I had already ordered from evcomponents.

Okay, now I'm 0 for 2. I ordered the JuicedRider pack but was just informed that there are bms problems that need to be addressed with that product. Tora (Juiced) was prompt about informing me and refunding quickly.

I have just received 10 lipo battery packs direct from china.

48 volts 10ah, rated for 40 amp continuous.

Nicely built pack...dimensions are only 6x6x2...weight 6.7 pounds.

I ordered 10 of these so i do have extras.

Price without charger is $600.

if anyone is interested i can post more data and pictures.

Well. At least you got physical delivery of something.

Pictures would be nice and info about the bms and charging. Have you done any testing? Would there be any warranty? Are you located in SF? Thx

Yes i am in San Francisco.

Illia and i are currently both testing this pack. It is very interesting...6x6x2 is tiny compared to a 10 amp hour lifepo4 pack.

Pm me and i will send you info and stats on the pack.

I will try to get some pictures later tonight.

If you are in SF it would be worth hooking up with Illia or myself just to see the pack.

I think I will buy one of those if those figures are correct. It is about half the size 3 ponds lighter than my Lithium iron pack. I'll send you a pm to arrange a meeting time/ test drive.
I would like to be able to fit my battery in a smaller stiffer bag than I am currently using. I have played with various mounting configurations and nothing is up to the going down a curb test. I think a smaller lighter battery would make it easy to secure the battery in the frame.
I'll use my lithium iron pack as a replacement for the lead pack on my prima ebike and use a lithium polymer on my high performance ebike.
