Electric Surf Board

The jet pump dosn´t produce enought trust.. I will get one of this kawasaki pumps and hope to get more trust.

It looks pretty good on the YouTube video. I can see how you want more thrust but it is comendable that you follwed through and got the first one working
 
To make a quick and dirty evsurfboard would a cheap 12v trolling motor work. I can see how rolling in a wave and getting hit with either a heavy jet drive or a prop and heavy motor could be deadly. A screen mesh cage around the prop would make the prop safer.
The ultimate safety would be an RC boat drive system built into a board. Since those parts are light weight and small they would hurt less if you got hit by your own board in a rolling wave. Buy r/c boat motor, esc , prop and prop shaft and install in a hollowed out spot in the board. Prop shafts and props could end right before or after the surf board fins. finally put a small cage around the props.
 
Being hit by a water jet is no problem. I would rather have ten jet ski jets on my body for an hour than a second in a sharp propeller, no doubt. I've been playing with high performance stand ups and I have never been hurt by the jet. Just forget everything else than a proper jet with both a impeller and a stator. And lots of power if you want to get out of the water.

My opinion is that propellers do not belong amongst people :)

This site shows a ice powered board.
Looks like lots of fun, easy to transport and unique.

I am seriously looking for a windsurfing board now. Would need a lot of motor to compete with a ice, but could try with two or three 80-100 as a start :D

Very nice video ! I hope you will continue this project. Does anyone know the rpm of a jet prop of a jetski ? A boat prop is about 2500 rpm I thought

I know that most of the stand up jet skis using 701-750 ccm motors have rpm limit around 7500 rpm.
Thats why someone have to link a few of the 80-100 180kv motors togheter and try combined with hv160. That gives 8500 unloaded. That's perfect for a ice replacement.
 
So a jet motor is directly to the crankshaft ? Then we don't need to rewind the Turnigy's, that is good

If you expect anything like effective performance or efficiency, the waterjet impeller pitch and diameter needs to be carefully matched to the motor power and target hull speed ...just like a prop drive.

Also be aware that impeller and housing condition, and peripheral gap, is absolutely critical to a jetdrive operation. A worn impeller or housing can result in total loss of performance, so be careful when buying a used jet unit
 
I bought a kawasaki 550 jetpump. I will test how much trust I get with one turnigy 80-100.
My goal is to reach planing speed. Dont know how much trust I need to reach it? I think more than 200lbs..?

Does anyone know how much trust a kawasaki 550 produce?

Some guy that supposedly know his stuff said that you will get 1hp out of the pump for every 1kw you put in. I don't know if that is spot on, but may be.

The kawaski 550 have 37hp stock and put out 360lbs of thrust. If we divide the thrust produced by motor hp we get 9.2 lbs of thrust per hp. Maybe you motor can provide peaks of 8hp, so let say max thrust out of the pump will be 73.6 lbs, or 33.4kg of thrust. That's not a lot, but may be enough for a surfboard?

Yes I hope that the produced trust is enought to reach planing speed..
Does anyone know what happens on planing speed, because of the much lower friction the motor amps must be also lower, isnt it?

I'm following your project, very interesting, I might try this too.

Have you thought about using foils to lift the board out of the water ?

It does not take so much power i think. There is a kayak with foil and a well trained person can lift it out of water with paddling only, I think it called the flyak or something like this.

There is a lot of potential in hydrofoil but whit my jet pump it is not so easy to realize this.

they say it's only 1 HP ??
i tried to find more technical info on their site, but one of them is returning an error,
and the other does not return any results

What is the latest on this project? I watched the videos and it looked like it would work well. I am curious what battery and motor setup you are using. After finding out the price and performance of the gas powered surf board, I want to build one for myself.
