JST balance taps suck. What should I replace them with?

The subject says it all. I've replaced some JST connectors as they fail with... new JSTs. Now they're failing again. They suck. What's a good alternative? (I can easily use Andersons, but they are pretty bulky)

i did a lot of research on this when i was building up my charger. The only connectors that have a long service life are the kind that hook together like andersons real andersons with stainless pressure spings inside. I was surprised to find out molex style connectors or any bullet style have short sevice life 20 - 50 times. I'm sure some of the hobby connectors will have long service lives too but there not modular and will be bulky.

I use Molex Mini Fit Jr. They work pretty well for me with #18 - 22 wire.

Thanks for that - I have 12 sets on the way from Mouser to upgrade from JST

Daaaaaamn, already pressed "go" on the Molex Mini Jr order. But, great input. I think I'll buy another 100 Andersons this weekend just in case the Mini Molex let me down. I still have a license & car etc, but like many ESers I prefer to ride the electron wave. Being "charger challenged" sucks ass. Reliability is essential. Andersons - bulky as they are in a set of 7 - are a known entity, and something I might just jump on. Thanks!

I am using Tyco connectors, known as CPC , (circular plastic connectors) AMP style.

I can't really speak of quality yet, they have not been in service that long.

Just curious as to what people think about these.

Thanks

I have the mini-molex style connectors for a variety of non-waterproof applications, and while they are easy to put together they aren't perfect. There is only a small section of conductors actually touching, and in the case of my cell-log8 units they give false readings if you wriggle the connectors a bit. But for stuff you don't take apart very often, they are alright.

I've used lots of these. Pretty good. Kinda expensive. I like them for panel mounts installs. They get bulky for free hanging connects with high pin counts.

what about those 7 pin stereo din connectors
they're cheap and seem pretty reliable

I'm using the Mini fit Jrs with special high mating cycle pins - the female pins are rated for 1000+ cycles, the males 200 cycles from memory.

Could you please provide a link to the data sheet of these high mating cycle pins.

I checked all 42 available mini fit jr connector data sheets and there all 30 maximum cycles. Maybe there in another location on the molex site.

Thanks

sorry to jump on the thread

but I'd love something like a Mini fit Jr but with more connections... at least 25 so I can use it for a balance connection on my 24s pack
(multiple parallel packs)

I'd buy motherboard power connections and extend them, but they only got up to 24pins and I need 25 connections

I'd use a parallel printer port type of plug/socket, but with paralleling packs on a cell level I'd like something happy with a higher current ?

What about the 25 pin serial cable type? 25 pin D connector. They were used for many years on computers, still in use.Cheap too.

Amphenol make good data connectors- there's a round 26 pin one. A bit more expensive than the 25 pin serial one. Amphenol have been used on electrical and electronics equipment for years and have an excellent reputation.

bought these on ebay... will see what they're like when they get here :)

That's amphenol type. I hope it does the job. Now I'm getting older I hate soldering when there are so many pins close together.

I use these in between connections. So I still have a jst at the end but it doesnt have to keep being removed from the charger.

As long as you remember to put heat shrink on before soldering each wire and do one at a time it should be fine. I also fill it with gorilla glue before assembly to keep it strong.

Those round multi pin connectors are appealing and when used for regulated electronics i'm sure they are great.. but i'm always weary using them for battery hookups that are always " live " and direct path to high power cells.....

Andersons on the other hand... awesome... for example :

A bit costly, but reliable and i feel safe using them as each pin is isolated completely from all others.
