Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Just got my 1000w 48v ebike kit from yescomusa, I've been dreaming of building my ebike for two years now. I've taken the first step and brought the kit, but I want to know what is the best battery option for me.
My goal is to use my hard tail MTB for offroading purposes, and the option to hang it on my bike rack on my car. Basically like a electric "dirt bike", I want about 20 mile range or so and will ride the bike almost every day. I will hitting the dirt trails, parks, and rare occasions on the street. I thought about lipo but I never soldered batteries before, I have a soldering iron and gun so I am familiar with soldering computer components.
I will mainly use the electric motor for uphills and rough terrain, I intend to just let the bike coast down on the dirt paths.
Any help would be appreiated thanks.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Pretty much how I use my yescome setup. I use either 55.5V 15AH or 74V 10ah battery pack. The 15ah pack will get me between 15 and 20 miles depending on hills and power usage. I use lipo which I do not recommend for you until you are thoroughly familiar on their use and care. You could buy an assembled lifepo4 pack. I would recommend at least 15/20ah pack for your desired range. You can use the stock controller with 15S setup as controller has 63V caps.
Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Batteries are the heart of your ebike. How much money do you want to spend ? You can't be cheap as cheap will ask for you to buy two batts. as starting over and pay more. Don't Victpower or bms battery or ebay junk.
So what amp draw is your controller ? Where. do you live ?

Welcome to ES****Do this before your first post or now (it's retroactive)*****
Please go to the User Control Panel, select Profile, and then enter your city, state/province, and country into the Location field (country minimum) and save it. This will help people help you. Example: Wylie, TX, USA. or just USA, but country as a minimum, and country is the most important. There are many cities with the same name all over the world. Without knowing what country you are in it's hard to make any recommendations. Thank you.
Rc lipo is all I use. For 20 miles I'd recommend 20ah of 12s lipo in the triangle. You don't need to solder a lipo pack together. All you need to do is plug them together using the connectors that come on them, then buy 6X charge cable and split the positive and negative leads to make those connections. I like to parallel the balance cables too so you can balance charge the whole pack as one unit without having to change anything. I can put a 12s4p pack together in under 10 minutes. 12s will get you a top speed of ~28mph on flats. A 12s 20ah pack and 12s charger will run ~$500 but will give you plenty of range. Slow down to 20mph and you can get over 40 miles on flats. Every 5ah is $100, so you decide if you can get by with less. 12s charger and psu is another $100. Maybe a little more depending on psu you get. The controller is 30A, but you don't ever have to worry about that using rc lipo. A 20ah 20c pack is rated for 400A and will weigh about 14 lbs and will easily fit in a 17"triangle frame with room to spare.

I used lipo before in my Airsoft guns, the rate of fire is much higher than conventional batteries. I also know that they tend to explode, and I need a good charger.wesnewell wrote:Hobbyking.com. Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Off road performance needs pretty much dictate the use of lipo, or limn types because of the lighter weight and smaller size.
Big bulky batteries that have to be carried on a rear rack, will just make you crash all day dirt riding.
If you want more of a plug and play setup, you might look at limn stuff. Electricrider for example, has very compact packs. 15 ah would be big enough to run your controller.
Ping or other lifepo4 will be too bulky, and about 3 or more pounds heavier. It's got fit in your frame triangle, for sure, or be so small and light that a rear rack carry doesn't matter.
Right now, my dirt ride is set up for 6 miles of dirt riding, with 5 ah of 48v lipo. 4 pounds.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
I wouldn't use one on a 30A controller, but they will work. It's like this. If you go wot all the time, or climb hills, you need a powerful battery. If you ride on level ground and rarely go wot, even a 1C battery will work. I use rc lipo so I don't have to worry about this crap. Personally, I'd never buy a pack that didn't have a continuous rating as high as my controllers max rating. Do that and you shouldn't ever have a problem and you should get max life from the pack.

How well will a fast wind motor in a 26" wheel hold up on dirt trails? Is the terrain you are looking at flat-ish hike-and-bike trails, or hilly stuff? I have that motor running 24s (and love it), but only run on the street and it is pretty flat around here.

Come up HC 136 from the river. Nothing real steep there but what appears to be a decent stretch of maybe 10% grade. It's not an extremely fast wind at 470rpm @ 48V, considering you can get a 1000W motor from leafbike that does over 700rpm @48V. Which is way to fast for all but very flat terrain.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Motor does fine with off road mountain bike conditions. Just did a 12 mile run trail run at San Clemente Canyon ( http://www.mountainbikebill.com/SanClementeCanyon.htm ). Plenty of hills, dropoffs and single track. Most all of my riding is off road. The yescom motor is a good all round unit quite capable when overvolted with some good lipo.maurtis wrote:How well will a fast wind motor in a 26" wheel hold up on dirt trails? I've been drueling at cellman's newly encased battery packs
Heres the 48V one, you should be able to run up to 30A battery current with 29E cells, thats 1.5kw. Maybe a bit more with 20R cells. http://em3ev.com/store/index.php?route= ... uct_id=161

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Same answer as before. It's a 10ah 20A battery pack. It's LCO too. I wouldn't touch any of those 20A packs, but they will work if you are light on the throttle. If you only want a 10ah pack, you should go with HK rc lipo. You've already got a charger I presume and you already know the chemistry. get a 12s 10ah pack for as little as $150 if you buy 6 4s hardcase packs.

Or for a little more, 4 of these that will charge easily with a 12s charger without having to make an adapter.

If you want a 2C pack, get a 15ah one.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
The lipos look good, but I am just checking out some plug and play alternatives. What about this battery, 30A discharge, I know the lipos would probably give better performance.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Yes, that should work well. It has a continuous 30A discharge rate with 40A burst max.

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
To get your $$ worth when buying a battery... the battery needs to last and I would only assume its going to last if you know exactly what sort of cells and BMS are in that. OR there should need to be a lot of people vouching for that seller or mfg'r of batteries. Otherwise you go with one of the forum favorites: Lipo, Ping battery, cell man, ebikes.ca
They make the claim "These are the same 18650 cell based batteries as in the Tesla car." but without just presenting the make/model of cell that just looks dam sketchy. The BMS is an unknown...

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
Looks like a solid battery. USA seller with 100% feedback. Much easier to warranty or get your $ back if something goes wrong.

Going to pick up the battery tomorrow, what does the PAS do, can I leave it unplugged for now? And also what about the brake levers that connect to the controller, are those for brake regen?

Re: Just got my ebike kit from yescomusa what battery?
The brakes have a kill switch if plug in. Just get it running first. Pas don't like it needs a crank ring and starts as soon as peddled or don't touch peddles at stop sign or as turning, as it will Go. No hook up for now. My E.S. opinion. Disclaimer. Zip...
