TESLA to Plans to Build World’s Biggest Battery Factory!

Interesting. I wonder if similar deposits exist under the guadalupes, or other nearby mountains. Sounds like it would be a major strip mine operation to get at the stuff. Yuk.

Any body heard where the giga factory will be located?

I couldn't find anything here on this. Tesla may move to a different cell, in the deal with Panasonic.

Too bad if the old reliable 18650 isn't more or less universal.

In addition, the cells Tesla currently use are a standard model called an 18650. If the company has committed to a unique design from Panasonic, it would presumably be at least a couple of years before it went into use to allow Tesla time for other manufacturers to ramp up production of the design. Even with the new supply agreement, the forthcoming $35,000 sedan some are referring to as the Model E will require perhaps another billion cells annually on its own. The agreement announced today makes no mention of that vehicle.

Texas probably has the friendliest business climate than either of the states. But, I am sure the incentives and distance to the assembly plant will have some weight. I think Texas would be a bad ass place for it. Then Tesla can build supercharging stations all the way from here to California!
Dogman and I will sneak in and charge our bikes up in like 2 seconds....LOL

Sorry boys, but I was born in Texas and still love the place. Yea, I left for liberal Massachusetts because I hated the politics there. Since joining the ranks of the open minded and intelligent, I migrated to green and then radically green. So its kinda hard to lay down an insult on the Texas energy strategy knowing that Massachusetts, California and Texas are competing for the top spot on their renewable energy infrastructure build-out. I believe Texas can currently claim to have the largest installed and generating base of wind turbines, thanks to Boone Pickens and his crew. FYI, Cape Wind has all its financing in place and will break ocean bed for their off-shore wind farm sometime 2014-2015, so will likely take the lead of the three. Still, I'd agree that giant dick waving plays a big part in the current testosterone driven energy politics world. All hail the guy with the biggest dick!

gd.jpgGreen wacko communist environmentalism such as who has the biggest green dick doesn't do much too further the cause for free market libertarians like myself. The fact that I can breathe cleaner air and keep my energy use closer too home and away from people who want too kill me does motivate me. Global warming is a bunch of crap.

I remember a post somewhere too that said that Tesla was considering building a full size electric truck as the next model to be built. Now that boys is a big dick!

LG Chem CEO says mulls electric car battery plant in China

Slightly related: A wee bit of competition...

(Reuters) - Chief executive of LG Chem said that the South Korean company was considering building an electric vehicle battery plant in China, expecting Beijing's efforts to tackle air pollution to drive demand.

Park Jin-soo also said LG Chem, which currently supplies electric-car batteries for General Motors Co's Volt and Renault cars, will double the number of its customers to 20 in the near future.

"We are considering it (the China car battery plant), which should be in line with market demand," Park said at a press briefing on Friday embargoed until Sunday morning.

LG Chem currently has a factory in Nanjing, China producing small batteries for smartphones and other mobile devices, and Park said the firm is looking at not only Nanjing and other sites for the potential car battery factory.

China's Finance Ministry said last month it will extend a program of subsidies for buyers of electric-powered vehicles after the current subsidy regime, part of efforts to combat pollution in cities, expires in 2015.

The subsidies were designed to help China meet a goal of putting half a million new-energy vehicles, defined as all-electric battery vehicles and heavily electrified "near all-electric" plug-in hybrids, on the road by 2015 and 5 million by 2020.

LG Chem's crosstown rival, Samsung SDI, said in January that it will form a joint venture in China to spend $600 million on building a car battery plant in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, by next year and on other electric car battery-related businesses over the next five years.

Diversity is good. KF

Good stuff Maybe by then the next break though will be in the publics hands....

i think elon expects to introduce a totally new cylindrical format that is optimized to production and storage capacity that will be a test of the current limits of the jelly roll machines.

why not a 75mm diameter and 250mm long cylinder with the ptc built into the top?

i expect he decided to maintain control also so the intellectual property does not appear in shenzen in two weeks. the chinese are exceptional at finding the secret sauce in any manufacturing process developments within weeks.

i know that even though my paper on the planarization process was kept secret within H-P corporate labs when i presented it at the semiconductor conference that H-P labs held at stanford sierra camp i was contacted within weeks by headhunters who were already being tasked to bring me to california to help develop it for other IC fabs. within a year Applied Materials had developed a similar process and Intel had formed their own planarization process group.

what was so amazing was that Intel formed a partnership with portland state university here to build a campus facility to develop their chemical/mechanical planarization step. the building for it was built right next to the place where i used to walk on campus every day.

one of my former students who was an iranian stuck in the USA because he woulda died in iran if he went back had developed a process to make tiny MEMS, little mirrors on the surface of a silicon wafer that individually could be switched by application of electric field underneath which was how the digital signals were sent down the fiber optic cables, and his little company was bot out by AT&T for about $100 million and he donated a fortune to PSU to found another chair in the EE department and the chair was for this joint venture between Intel and PSU. small world circled back on itself right where i came to school.

I got my big dick being born in Massachusetts of all places?
Have since learned to live with the lizards and loving the sun. Coldest winter in decades and the great lakes are freezing over still isn't proof enough that it's a sham. :?
But, hey I do play well with others so what the heck....

winnyboy, know of others leaving Massachusetts for New Mexico and Colorado, so can dig the move. Sham? hahhaaaaa! Then you have obviously not been following my dialog on such here at ES, which is supported by actual science, research and reference. When you local forest burns down because of prolonged drought there in NM and you're ready to come back to New England, let me know.

Even after the forests are gone, I'll stick around here myself. Born here, I'm a desert dog.

Anyway, I had heard some buzz about Albuquerque being in the running. All the guys just laid off at Intel would love that.

I was telling my wife, Texas or Louisiana must be in the running too. Why? Why in oil country? Cuz the place isn't full of people who came from polluted states who will lie down in front of the earth movers if they try to build a factory here. Las Cruces has been particularly bad for that. We tar and feather a guy proposing a factory in this town. They had to take the Algae fuel plant to a neighboring county.

I'm just hoping that if it goes to Burque, that will mean cheap cells in the burque flea market.

The wood pellet plant that was proposed for Otero County never made it in business, because the neighbors complained about the dust. This would have been a great addition to our energy and economic mix, but no  .

The pellet plant shut down and then a bunch of meth heads went in and stole $50,000 worth of copper wiring and it will probably never open again.

Friendly to businesses that aren't threatening the oil industry, maybe.

Remember that they won't even allow Tesla to sell new cars in Texas. Somehow, I feel that Musk isn't going to allow battery production to be there without some other compromises being made on the other side of the fence.

I'm calling Nevada since it is the closest to California

Funny how GM has to outsource EV battery manufacturing to LG chemical of South Korea, but Elon Musk and Tesla will soon be making their own battery packs in USA. How come GM didn't make their own battery plant YEARS ago? Lack of vision perhaps?

Same reason that Tesla didnt get into making their own earlier..
Its cheaper to buy them in from specialist manufacturers.
In the same way car makers dont make their own 12v batteries, tires, or bearings, or... etc etc.
Most auto makers are only really "assembly" plants with a large proportion of components actually being supplied by independent manufacturers. ...even engines & gearbox's etc in some cases.
This is a huge risk for Musk, there is no way he can compete with China etc on labour costs, or local tax's, environment regs, etc, so he needs to be sure no body else sets up a similar plant in Asia making a similar product that he could buy much cheaper than produce himself.

I was hearing Austin mentioned in the Albq news last night. Not the best insolation in TX, but also a high tech town like Burque. Anything west of Odessa has the insolation, about 6 hours a day year round average. But even Austin would have plenty, it's not on the foggy coast.

The story last night was just about lack of a rail spur to a couple of the proposed NM locations along I 40. The rail guys were saying that's no problem.

Too bad they aren't looking at Santa Teresa. That's literally ebike range to my house. Has a humongous rail intermodal transportation hub that is brand new, and a humongous solar PV site already in existence. They have the permitting for expansion of the solar, so BING.

Then I'd only need to get my wife convinced to go get a job in their hazmat disposal section. You know, where they get rid of the b grade cells? Muahhaahhaaa.

Right now at NMSU, all the batteries she disposes of are just tired lead for emergency lights. No old Makita packs at all dammit.
