    'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

Trials cranks are available in modern splines including some PF bottom brackets and a few people have made adapters to mount splined freewheels on DM cranks. It's not rocket surgery.

    Left side drive: what's current?

Sounds like you just need to buy an LMX.

Sur-rons ARE motorbikes. "Bicycles" with +1500w ARE motorbikes. Trail access is a very real issue that isn't helped by building motorbikes that can pass as bicycles. Around town I don't personally care, but at places set aside for MTBs I absolutely understand why there are lines in the sand...

What’s the weakest link in my electric bike?

On a ground up build with what you're trying to do I'd use an OSET hub and forget about the freehub. That'll let you run regen as well.

What’s the weakest link in my electric bike?

    It'll be the freehub.

    'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

Honestly you can either pick between fast-ish production with the first units being not fully developed (CYC) or a much slower development with what are hopefully very refined systems (Lightest).

What are the problems with e-bikes?

Anything that negatively impacts traction and is fiddly to setup isn't going to fly in the commercial realm. Personally I see the integration of gearboxes and motors in the frame as the big leap for EMTBs. Electric motors need lots of reduction but not lots of gears, humans can turn pretty high...

    'lightest.bike' 1.7kg 1000w mid drive

The observed trials world offers a variety of much higher quality freewheeling cranks in a range of lengths and bottom bracket types.

What are the problems with e-bikes?

I think EMTBs can get lighter through better battery tech and possibly some motor optimization. 40-45# has been done in the DIY world by keeping power low enough to be an assist rather than offering Olympic sprinter power on top of what the human produces.

What are the problems with e-bikes?

Heavy and expensive, even the very best factory EMTBs are just too damn heavy.

    Recumbent Trike as Legal Wheelchair?

I'm assuming this is to allow use in areas that prohibit ebikes? If so I'd want to be sure the person truly requires the accommodation.

Why Shimano Di2 is the perfect complement to a BAC 855 and BBSHD setup

Di2 is amazing for hand cyclists with limited hand movement or strength. Hopefully electric shifting becomes more mainstream and affordable for them.

    3D printed 400mm EDF project

Yes. But compare that with getting the tools to machine 6061 or to produce carbon fiber parts in the traditional way, costs are similar or a bit less.

    3D printed 400mm EDF project

Continuous fiber filament printing I believe can produce parts with almost the strength of aluminum now. Prices are coming way down too.

Spinning the axle would allow quite a bit more weight reduction and mounting options.

Is a full-on Downhill DIY ebike a mistake for XC Singletrack?

I'm mean a 27.5er (possibly 29er mullet) with ~160mm of travel. Power systems I'd consider are around 10-15# including battery. I intend to use power simply to build momentum to clear sections rather than hike them, not flow uphill. I have no interest in the "enduro" style of light electric...

Is a full-on Downhill DIY ebike a mistake for XC Singletrack?

Sure +2 two hours of EMTB does have certain fitness challenges so long as you are riding difficult terrain. But 30-60 minutes around home isn't going to do much when you're using a motor that simples adds way more power than you need. I ride a lot of classic West Coast single track and the...

    DD Motor

The problem with DD motors is weight and low end torque. Fix that and they become relevant.

Is a full-on Downhill DIY ebike a mistake for XC Singletrack?

If it's fitness you're after leave the motor at home, especially a DIY setup which includes a throttle. If however you must add a motor then do something like this: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=107622 Which offers minimal weight and just enough assist to help without...

Not generally problematic any more than the chain wheel on a regular bike. The strength of the X1 or Stealth is they can be mounted inside the frame. Also on a 29er the chain wheel is pretty small. Because of the chain secondary you can also play with the gearing much easier. The downside to...

I'm very PRO mid-drive and ANTI hub motor for off-road use actually. What I am against is loosing ground clearance and having a motor hit obstacles first. As was just posted the X1 is a mid-drive from CYC which has just started shipping.

Backpack battery is one option. Custom to fit the frame is another, especially if you keep the power and battery small. Definitely don't do a rack mount battery and hub motor, you might as well ride one if the dinosaurs Chalo posted.

Kollter usa Banshee Storm / Time ET gearbox emoto

Where did you find the Nicot? They do look much better and apparently the brand has been around a while on the value end of the spectrum, probably much like Japanese bikes in the 70s.
