    Honestly you can either pick between fast-ish production with the first units being not fully developed (CYC) or a much slower development with what are hopefully very refined systems (Lightest).

    Anything that negatively impacts traction and is fiddly to setup isn't going to fly in the commercial realm. Personally I see the integration of gearboxes and motors in the frame as the big leap for EMTBs. Electric motors need lots of reduction but not lots of gears, humans can turn pretty high...

    I think EMTBs can get lighter through better battery tech and possibly some motor optimization. 40-45# has been done in the DIY world by keeping power low enough to be an assist rather than offering Olympic sprinter power on top of what the human produces.

    I'm very PRO mid-drive and ANTI hub motor for off-road use actually. What I am against is loosing ground clearance and having a motor hit obstacles first. As was just posted the X1 is a mid-drive from CYC which has just started shipping.

    Backpack battery is one option. Custom to fit the frame is another, especially if you keep the power and battery small. Definitely don't do a rack mount battery and hub motor, you might as well ride one if the dinosaurs Chalo posted.
