HC fuel to heat/light to solar electricity: 40% efficient, currently..!

Well this light is from burning a hydrocarbon fuel and some sodium from a renewable source IIRC. I guess sodium improves efficiency here too, but IIRC it was about a specific light frequency the 'solar cells' liked where they (that bit) is 60% efficient.

Serial Hybrid Cycle with ICE Generator Onboard

The issue with small capacity engines is that the combustion chamber surface area to cc (volume) ratio goes goes up dramatically as cc's decrease. What this means is that there is more surface area for heat to escape through, rather than push the piston the smaller you go. ie: Halving all the...

    Fettering Rotor for Bicycle

I'm well aware that wind energy might be converted into forward motion while in motion, or at least some torque in that direction. I posted about ...er... sprung wings over spokes likely helping to provide a bit of forward torque here somewhere. (They would ameliorate the effect of side...

My first ebike build: custom-built KMX-based electric velomobile

I would say that if you are looking for the ultimate burn anything engine a modern equivalent of these Lohmann Variable Compression Ignition Engines, with a Pyrolysis System (using waste exhaust heat and a bit of catalyst: zinc, copper) is the answer. You can pyrolyze just about anything...

My first ebike build: custom-built KMX-based electric velomobile

Hmmm-ok! :) Some 26cc water cooled engines. 2-Stroke Engine Hobby RC Gas/Nitro Engines for Gasoline Boats & Watercraft for sale | eBay for many reasons (repairability, safety) I'd still use a chrome molly steel tube frame doing double duty as skin cooling and quarter wave silenced exhaust...

My first ebike build: custom-built KMX-based electric velomobile

I hear ya. :) So the ideal diff as always, is a limited slip diff. As the pinion gears only rotate fast when one wheel loses traction; putting strong torquey generators on them would be ideal... But that adds a lot of weight and size for something hardly ever working..? Perhaps magnetizing the...

My first ebike build: custom-built KMX-based electric velomobile

Got a link to that suspension? 20cc...? That's changed!? :) You were talking 5-6hp IIRC. The issue is at those cc's the surface area of the combustion chamber to cc ratio sucks and you lose a lot of efficiency to wasted heat. IIRC you're looking at ~7-8% at that cc vs 30% for a car sized...

My first ebike build: custom-built KMX-based electric velomobile

Ah... so the INSIDE wheel thats turning slower is the one getting the power. Hmmm... no-thx: That is the wheel that will try and push you into going straight rather than turning in the direction you want to turn in. (That's especially dangerous for delta trikes) Putting generators on the...

Where do/did you find a small Limited Slip Diff suitable for quads? I like the price and ease of making this diff: but no LS..?

After your experience this is a moot point (for you) :), but 2 words: Tilting/Leaning Trike. Now you have: Legal..? (The main reason and lower rolling resistance) High Ride Height is no longer a stability issue = more visible and safer. The equivalent of a 2 wheeler, with around twice the...

A handy passive to active battery cooling blog post?

So EV cars and trucks (Like Edison Motors' Topsy that will use the aircon to cool the battery when necessary) are all banging on the batteries way harder than the E-Bike crowd is? ie: You guys all run more than enough cells in parallel for heat=amps per cell not to be an issue, whereas; The...

A handy passive to active battery cooling blog post?

This looks like it may be interesting/useful to battery case designers and builders? I've often wondered about the sealed battery boxes, with almost no mention of cooling, in most posts here..? Thermal Management System in Li-ion Battery using Air Cooling. (Blog by Aniket Bajare)

A 'Make it with a Jig-Saw' wood 'velomobile'. Cheap and cheerful :)

My thoughts exactly. Looking at a the flat nose, my immediate thought was; "For light and EASY better aero, cut one of these in half for a more aero nose" The size is probably wrong but there are other similar bottles. The basics rule of thumb for the most aero nose is half an ellipse, where...

Double thick motor wires by half in one side and half in the other of a fully hollow shaft??

I've been looking at hub motors where ALL the wires go into/out of the motor through one side of a hollow shaft, with much ado about maximizing wire thickness to avoid them getting hot. That left me scratching my head: If you want thick wires that stay cool etc; why not have a fully hollow...

AWD/2-WD Series hybrid with removal genset.

In the video they do go into how it's a high end, tuned suspension system from (IIRC) an enduro bike. But ye; the laws of physics say: "Go light!" :) The unsprung weight is the one thing I dont like BUT NB that with tires this 'fat' a lot of the suspension is in fact in the tire, so the...

AWD/2-WD Series hybrid with removal genset.

So this vents the genset's warm air and exhaust forward so you don't 'boil your eggs'! :) But you're still in that warm air and exhaust, which would be nice in cold weather, but you're still getting fumigated. So this is more a 'Easily take your genset with you' to charge the bike when you're...

Wondering about potential of plywood velomobile

Ye, I said: "Along with the rounded nose I'd add.." Ideally a half ellipse with a 3 to 1 ratio if we're being technical. No front facing surface would be anything but that on 'my velo'. I'm think hot wire cut, replaceable styrofoam is light, cheap and may even help in a head on collision...

A 'Make it with a Jig-Saw' wood 'velomobile'. Cheap and cheerful :)

I couldn't agree more! :) Regen or not; Lightness is where it's at for efficiency! But a light and safe (and aero) velo is Carbon and Aramid fiber and that's not cheap and easy! The Mochet seems to be lighter due to more steel construction? 4 wheels makes it a car in most jurisdictions too...

    Streamlined gasoline-ICE microcar/tadpole trikes

Ye; water cooled is way better and you do get water cooled RC engines nowadays. Then there's no reason not to put it in a 'Helmholtz designed' box. Water's one way to do it and exhaust is full of water once you cool it down enough. There can be other advantages too. But rust, weight and aero...

    Streamlined gasoline-ICE microcar/tadpole trikes

Hear: We are talking constant rpm Series Hybrid here, where Helmholtz and Quarter Wave Resonators (anti noise waves) are hugely effective at damping specific frequencies. Frequencies that remain constant at constant rpm..! They work in engine enclosures, exhausts (extensive anti drone use), and...

Einstein–de Haas effect: a change in magnetic moment causes the body to rotate

I'm thinking maybe a thick Ferro-Fluid instead of Laminations and get the little (electrically insulated/oxide?) ferro balls to rotate N-S-N-S rather than magnetize one way and then the other the whole time, but whatTH do I know!? :)
