C Cab Hot Rod Power Advice

Looking good!

Ready for the paint yet?

The ibb-hosted linked pics do show up, but if you really want to make sure they always show up and never go away when someone is reading this thread, you should do what's done in that last post, or just copy and paste the actual images (not just links to another site with them), directly into your posts. That way the images get hosted along with the text of the post, and will also be served up wiht them regardless of someone else's access to any external websites.

(because external sites go away, or delete content, or make it inaccessbile thru hotlinks, etc., but if it's right here then if you can read the text you can see the images).

Using the Attach button does the same thing that copying the image and pasting it does, so you can use either method. :)

FYI
That picture is from the first road test time frame. But I am soon readying the project for another road test.

But between Marty's and your comments, I have learned why the pics may not be appearing ...again.
The new computer doesn't have a slot for SD cards. My bad on that. So, because of the previous snafu, I started using direct download from the camera via USB. I have Windows 11, and I think the pics go to a temporary file. In any case, as was inferred, I copied all those pics and pasted them into 'Pictures' for now. So when I post here, I will source my pics from there.

I will no longer copy and paste from one website to another. As for the loss of data due to a website closing, that has happened to me before, but I really haven't thought about it for this application.

The other site that follows my build is AtomicZombie.com, now called ChopZone.com. They will also be closing down by the end of this year.

Pics have always been a main focus when posting about my projects. Always better for those trying to see and comprehend what I'm doing.

I do have one question.
I've never figured out how to preview my post before hitting the post button. How do I do that?
I've always posted replies and then edited them when something isn't correct.

BTW
I had to use ImgBB.com to load images to AZ/CZ, because they had to stop offering that capability.

Okay, now I must go watch Monday Night Football.

The icon at the far right of the toolbar above the posting box (page with the magnifying glass) turns the preview on or off. You can't edit while it's on, so you have to turn it on to see, then off to correct anything.

When you are typing your post out, there is a bar of icons right above where you are typing. It's the one at the right end of that bar.

On my screen, the icon you want me to see/find/use does not show on my taskbar
My icons stop at the 'drafts'. I have clicked on 'more options' and found no help there.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your time and effort, but let's not worry too much about this.
I've decided the best course of action is to make NO mistakes. If I do, I will do a workaround (post then edit) as I have done many times.

Something interesting just happened. I went over to my AZ/CZ thread, and guess what? That icon you want me to see/find/use shows up on that thread. Over there, it is labeled 'Preview'. But I can't edit in preview. I must go back to the original text.

I've been using it forever. Why doesn't it show on my ES thread? You probably know better than I.

Same here. Windows 7, Tried Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Google Chrome. No see Preview button.

Sorry if I am missing something totally obvious, but is there a way to preview a post before hitting Post reply?

It's possible to enable this feature but i tried it and the preview looked exactly like the output. ( exception i know of: the quotes look different )
Therefore it seems like yet another superfluous xenforo feature..

If you notice significant discrepancies in the editor view vs the post itself, point them out!

So why can Amberwolf see something that no one else can? He has Supernatural powers which enable him to see and use icons that are invisible to everyone else.

He can because, as we all know, he possesses analytical superpowers, of which we can only dream. His mass of experience, intellect, and uncanny ability to solve [our problems] means he has been endowed with the power to see things we cannot.

Of course, in some places, that may get you room and board at the local funny farm.

Which "skin" are you using? I'm using Shades of Grey, but the default is ES 2.0. I just tested by switching over momentarily, and found that ES 2.0 does not have that preview icon...but Shades of Grey does. Different skins apparently can have different icons, placements, etc.

Hi this is Batman, formally known as Marty. I am down here in Amberwolf's Wolfcave. Thinking of getting a cat to deal with the bats. The Wolf's are just laying around like lazy dogs.

White text on Grey background has given me Supernatural powers. Today I will end all litter on planet earth. Anybody reading this know how a garbage can works? It's really pretty simple. Take trash and put it in the can. If you see a litter bug dropping trash on the ground. Politely teach them how to find a garbage can and dispose of their trash.

Learning, learning, learning.

In the course of recalling, relearning, redoing, and maybe, some redesigning, I discovered my lithium-ion battery wasn't/isn't fused properly. At least from my understanding. The BMS has its own circuit breaker, but I had thought of installing another external to the battery. I have since discarded that idea.

As a result, there was no fuse between the battery and the positive point on the distribution block to the controllers.
I also learned that the, 40-amp fuse rating was incorrect for a 48-volt system.

So I searched and found 40-amp fuses rated for a 48-volt system.
Now I know what an 'ANL' fuse is

So, here is the new (in-process) fusing for the battery.

Making my own cover. I understand that this type of fuse is recommended to be within 7 inches of the battery.

So I'm making a holder/cover for the location it best fits.
The connector to the battery is just to the right in the picture.

Last but not least, I hope I have resolved the adding attachments fiasco.

Completed and mounted.

Cutting and installing terminal ends later.
No time today to install the battery and electrical check.

Question for you..the viewer.

Which is best for you to view the pics?

Thumbnail or full image?

Every viewer is different. For me I like big. Big like so I can print billboard size images.

You can always make a photograph smaller. Never good to make a photo bigger.

Also the world is horizontal. People who make vertical movies and pictures with a phone should be killed.

If it helps the decision:

Thumbnails should be faster to load the page (especially for pic-heavy posts); then clicking any thumbnail brings up the image viewer where one can scroll right/left thru all the post's images, or click on specific ones at the bottom.

Regarding the fuse, it looks like a good mounting; as long as it's close enough to the battery itself that there's little risk of the wire from the battery being able to short to itself or the frame, or anything else, before it reaches the fuse.

(meaning it's safest to ahve the fuse as close to the battery as possible, to protect as much fo the systme wiring as possible).

I yearn to learn...but
The more I know, I find the less I know.

Since deciding to go with two voltage sources and adding relays, and reviewing my wiring diagrams, I find that some things need to be changed/upgraded. So in the interest of safety and comprehension, I’m doing somewhat of a do-over.

Most important is the motor circuit.

Adding the new 48-Volt, 40-amp fusing on the positive wire from the battery is the first step.
Learning that made me think my 12-volt relays for the motors also need/should be 48-volt 40-amp..

Remember, the intent is to switch on one motor at a time (left or right), or both as needed, using a switch for each motor. I’ve attached the diagram that came with the 48-volt 1800-watt motors. I will be modifying that to include the two toggle switches.

There is now a fuse on the (+) terminal, called for on the diagram
Each motor has its own dedicated circuit/controller, using this diagram for each one.
mtr diagram.jpg

Not sure if any component needs to be rated for 80 amps (if both motors are running), since each motor has its own circuit (40-amp max). Each motor is drawing about 33 amps.

Cleanup complete, and an embarrassing find.

Before
DSCN5813.JPG

After

Most everything is back as it should be. Almost.
I need to buy some 8-gauge end terminals for the 40-amp fuse
and maybe a couple of 12-volt relays.

I've removed virtually all of the 12-volt system. Will reinstall when I've finished with the motor circuit.

Now for the embarrassing senior moment. (That's going to be my excuse)

All the talk about needing to change from 12-volt relays to 48-volt relays was for naught.
Been there, done that. Two already on hand and prepped for hookup.

So I'm left with four 12-volt, 40-amp relays.
Nothing is fastened yet, except the original fuse block and adjoining distribution block,
just in case there is a change.

No in-shop work today. Had 7 am coffee with the guys, Topics today: aches, pains, and wiring.

Also searched for more info about ANL fuses and how they are used.
The link below seemed knowledgeable. It will also explain why I wired it the way I did..

He is using amplifiers as an example, but the result using my motors should be the same.

It's quite interesting. See what you think.

Based on recent knowledge and today's supplemental info, the diagram below is presented for your perusal.
If I have drawn it correctly, this should get me going. Hoping this will result in a function test soon.

I ordered a set of two 'midi' 40 amp fuses with holders and covers.
Getting short on space, so the midi's being much smaller will help greatly.
Also ordered two more 12-volt relays.
All should be here tomorrow.

Oh, and I just remembered that this system with my current battery will need to be upgraded in the future. Probably to a 100ah size. At present, I can only use one motor at a time, using 33.5 +/- amps of the 40 amps that are available. Both motors running will pull a +/- 67 amps.
