Chalo what do you think about this? (ReTyre)

I'm not a perfect replacement for Chalo, but I can say reasonable certainty that idea seems nice, but I bet it will degrade handling and cause considerably more rolling resistance - even improperly glued tubulars tend to do this. How exactly bad will that be - remains to be seen...

I'm not convinced that zippers can do what we ask of tire sidewalls. In this case, it seems the zippers are not being required to hold in tire pressure, which is good. But it means whatever tread you zip onto the, um, under-tire (?) will be slack by tire standards, and likely to squirm when placed under lateral loads in turns and on side slopes.

It also means that whenever you're using a tread other than the one on the base tire, you essentially have two tires mounted. That can't be good for rolling resistance, ride quality, or weight.

It looks like the swappable skins are not continuous loops, I suppose so they can be installed without removing the wheel. This puts a seam in the tread which could serve as a weak spot, an abnormal wear spot, and/or a noticeable bump as the wheel rolls.

Swapping tires isn't hard (unless you use a tubeless system, which serves as its own punishment for foolishness). I can't imagine that zipping on an over-tread is so much easier and faster than swapping the tire that it would justify the added drawbacks and expense this system presents.

They've been around a while and brought up before, if interested.
