Hello! I just finished installing my brand new Baserunner + All-Axle rear grin direct drive. Excited, I test ran the rig 200 meters and everything seemed ok. I headed back home, turned it off and on, and since then it makes this horrible sound. What's more, I can reproduce it by spinning it by hand.

Does anyone have an idea?

That's a very odd sound for a hub motor to make and it sounds a lot like tire rubbing.

I would contact grin about that since you should be under warranty. They may advise you to open the motor for inspection, or send it back.

Finally found a lead in another post, they describe a "Cogging" feel and it is EXACTLY what I feel and hear (through vibration through the frame I guess?) from the motor. My guess is a shorted phase wire somewhere, either motor/harness side or controller.

I'll test phases later today.

I have a halls wiring issue on mine.. yeah, could be wiring.

I'm thinking this is the case. Orders have been slow and certain items listed as out of stock for 3-4 months now.

Yes, but with the wires disconnected, and the motor spinning, a problem with halls cannot make the noise you're describing; what you have is a mechanical problem.

Damn in good point. I removed the cassette already, and followed the whole wheel to make sure there was no rubbing. No idea what it could be at this stage.

Talk to grin, they'd know!

Hope you get it sorted. I thought I was going to have to take apart my all axle to replace the motor wire I smashed in the dropouts but it's holding up with the liquid electrical tape I applied.

I got disassembly instructions from Grin. For some reason I didn't realize I'd have to unlace the wheel and use presses and a crank puller to get it all apart. Labor and shipping to send it back to Grin was expensive. But yours should be warranty id guess.

I'm noticing this clunk after < 100 miles.. noticed it right after installing the spacer they sent me. it might have been going on before, but i ride with headphones.

Has anyone successfully repaired this?

Grin recently put out a video showing disassembly:

Mine was a short in the winding. It was a mega-clunking though, no sound with the motor unusable. I had it fixed by Grin.
It's so annoying you have to unlace to disassemble...

Oof, that's bad news, i think the cure for that is a new stator.. i'll be sending mine back!

Dang, looks like I'm staring down the barrel of a similar problem.
Yeah it looks exactly like what I had. I'm bummed seeing it happen to a multitude of people. I hope now that they did a rebuild it will last somewhat longer than the warranty period...

You wrote: "Normally, I would tackle this (it's just hall sensors, right?) except that the all axle requires you to unlace the wheel to open it. I, honestly, didn't know this when purchasing the motor and, until it was in my hands, it didn't dawn on me."

110% this. Pretty bad surprise for me too.

That's the biggest drawback to hub motors. I can remove my TSDZ2 mid drive in about 15 min. It sounds like Grin do not test each motor on a stand before shipping. I suppose that's not standard practice?
