The Concept:
I’m 63 and not as fit any more. I still want to ride with younger friends and do some charity rides…etc. so I bought a nice used road bike to start. I had converted my wife’s step-thru a couple years ago with a Eunorau Torque sensing 350w rear motor kit. I liked it so much better than the 500w E-bikeling kit it replaced. So I wanted something similar for my road bike build:
The parts:
Felt F-60 aluminum frame, carbon fork, stays, seat post. $175 US
Eunorau e-Torque kit (No motor) with
Eunorau torque sensing BB.
Bafang FM G320.250 R 13 geared 1:11 on a 26” front wheel.
Used SRAM square-taper crank arms.
Bafang 850c display.
36v 13Ah battery. (Same as on my bbs02 commuter and my wife’s bike)
The Problems:
Eunorau changed motors from Shingyi with zero speed magnets to Bafang with 1 speed magnet used on their E-Torque BIKES. Then they discontinued selling the KITS. They couldn’t supply me with any help with manufacturer contacts, or a controller upgrade and I was locked out of the advanced functions of the controller. I needed to change the motor size and the number of speed magnets. I wanted to keep this controller, because it was set up for the torque sensing BB.
The kit sat for a year. Meanwhile I found a bike and rebuilt the 26” wheel to a 700c. I didn’t realize the hub had 36 spokes but my 700c Alexrim had 32 holes. When you leave 4 empty holes in the hub you have to use a large variety of spoke lengths ( like 8 different lengths! ) Frustrating. I also did some cutting and grinding on the hub axle to fit my skinny carbon fork.
The speed magnet problem was solved by cutting 5 magnets out of the motor shell.
The Felt had an FSA splined crank. The new BB is square-taper. Tried a 165mm crank and then went to a 175 that gave a better response from the torque sensor.
What’s left ? :
I want to keep the throttle option, but the standard kit throttle is not easily mounted on drop bar brifter hoods. Anybody have ideas here?
Also, I want to make a custom battery that looks like a large seat-bag hanging off above the back tire.
And clean up the cabling a lot.
Let me know what you think and any suggestions.
