Forest Fires 🔥

Driver error? Should have just ran the ladder over causing only damage to the truck instead of swerving to avoid it then losing control and rolling over.

From Edmunds.com- “The average catalytic converter contains about 1-2 grams of rhodium, about 3-7 grams of platinum, and between 2 and 7 grams of palladium.”

That’s less than twenty GRAMS of precious metals in a cat vs thirty KILOGRAMS just for the COBALT in an EV battery!!
Yep. But given how rare platinum, palladium and rhodium is to how relatively common cobalt is, you have to move about the same amount of rock - and do the same damage - in both cases. And, of course, use slave labor for both.

Cobalt makes up 25 parts per million of the Earth. Platinum is .005 ppm, palladium is .015 and rhodium makes up .001 ppm. That means if you have to mine 2 grams of rhodium you have to move two million kilograms of (average) earth; if you want to mine 30 kilograms of cobalt, you have to move 1.2 million kilograms of average earth. Now add in all the earth you need for platinum and palladium, and you have to move far more earth to make that catalytic converter. (Moved by those poor child slaves o my!)

Fortunately the Earth concentrates all those metals via various methods, so the actual amount of earth you need to move is thousands of times less - and since platinum is much heavier than cobalt, it is concentrated more easily by gravity based mechanisms. It ends up being about the same amount of ore needed in both cases.

OK, I don’t have time to fact check you, but let’s say that’s right… if cobalt was the only thing needed that’s fine. But we are only talking cobalt not the whole 1000lb battery. What about the rest of it? Still takes way more energy and pollution to make an EV battery before it even rolls off the lot.
