I want to reduce the no politics rule. What do you think?

Should we significantly loosen the no politics rule?

Today the 'T' world invokes much stronger negative emotions than the 'F' word, so it will be replaced with 'Orange Man'.
Maybe I read too much Harry Potter as a kid, but I'm a believer in "fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself." Are you suggesting that people aren't allowed to mention the name of the current US President on the forum? If so, I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with you on that. If you can't stand the mention of the name of an elected official, that's a personal problem. It's just a name.

Furthermore, if the forum is indeed trying to attempt to remain impartial, not allowing to mention the name, and allowing a pejorative term based on his physical appearance, is picking a side. If people want to use a (very) mild pejorative instead of the name of an elected official, I think that's mostly okay, though I personally disagree with it. If we are to mandate on this forum that the elected official's name cannot be use, and a pejorative needs to be used instead, that violates the spirit of the attempted impartiality of the forum.

If it's really too difficult for a person to read the name of an elected official, may I suggest "the US president," or "the current US president"?

Hey, I see that you've actually coded it so that the forum automatically corrects the spelling of the current US president with a pejorative. I didn't realize that you could do that. Can you please remove that feature, on the basis of my reasons in the previous post?

Even moreso than mentioning the 'Austrian Painter' that social media tends to censor? That's quite something!

With all due respect and appreciation for the hard work you guys do moderating the forum, I feel compelled to voice my objection to the president's name being changed to orange man. This is exactly the type of escalation and insults you were trying to avoid.

The entire point of not talking politics is to tone down the insults and personal attacks. The guy is the President of the US and his name will inevitably come up in factual and non partisan discussions.

If a poster on here is talking about a price due to the president's tariffs, that is a non-partisan factual statement. If it changes his name to orange man, that poster is now hurling an insult at the president.

I am very careful about the political views I share with the public on the internet. Having my statements retroactively changed to appear partisan feels disgusting and violates the trust I have with this forum.

On top of that this particular presidential administration has subpoenaed tech companies for information on users that post critical content about the administration. Please do not put words and opinions into users' mouths that are not their own!

Removing my content if I accidentally say something political is the appropriate way to handle the no politics rule. Changing my words is terrifying and unethical.

Please remove this change. This will drive away users.

Thanks again for the work you guys do here.

testing - orange man
That's silly. Please stop.
Mandarin Oranges have been bad this time of year.
Ya know this is the internet. People in the future will be reading about the past. You can't change history. In 1063 days T.rump will be no more.

Days until T.rump is out of office

Okay, i've rescinded it because you guys have some valid points.
'orange man' is the least pejorative term i could imagine that still invokes who we are talking about.

That's why the rules cannot change.....Even the administration has problems keeping neutrality. It's human nature.

It's similar to calling Elizabeth Warrren 'Pocahontas' or California's governor 'Navin Gruesome'

PS, i was contacted privately by both conservative and liberal leaning people over this.
This really reinforced my idea of how ideologically diverse we are.

I should have asked about that change, and this is my error for not doing so.

I appreciate you guys holding me accountable.
We are divided by politics, but united by the love of the EV.

I know I shouldn't press it, you rescinded the change, but wouldn't "current US president" have been less pejorative? It's factual, accurate, objective, and differentiating from past and future elected officials.

we've always replaced the F word with 'frock' to help tone things down.
Wow! I had no idea! I always thought it was the poster's own language choice! I recall interacting with some posters who were throwing around the frock bomb a lot when it really was the F-bomb they were throwing us! WTF?!?!?!

May we ask what other words or terms are automatically replaced by the software?

Just the F word.

True, but i think if we are going to do that, it should at least be funny.
Maybe that's not possible at this time. The T word is like dropping a F bomb in the 1930's.

Yeah, this has been the setting since way before i inherited the forum.
I think i know who you're talking about btw, lol

I also didn't know until today, and I've also noticed a half dozen obnoxious new posters use frock, thinking it was just unusual word choice

Haha, yep, in fact I started to think it might be some new urban slang that maybe I should start implementing in order to be more hep early on ahead of the wave. :D

Guys.
I want to sincerely thank you for your feedback to help make a good decision for the site here.
This has not been an easy discussion but i feel like enough aspects got aired out and considered.
And we also got a few reminders of what happens when we crack the lid.

The idea is canceled.

The discussion also brought up some holes in understanding of what off topics section is for. And i also noticed that the politics rule is hanging out there and should actually be in the rules post these days. So, some new members might be missing it.

Here's the changes that are made today:
- the wording about what is acceptable spice level for political discourse in off-topic is un-stickied and remains up for historical context.
- the main rules post now clarifies the existing politics rule, and a super condensed version of the why.
- the main rules post clarifies that off topic is a little less loosely moderated.
- we've always replaced the F word with 'frock' to help tone things down. Today the 'T' world invokes much stronger negative emotions than the 'F' word, so it will be replaced with 'Orange Man'. <-- not popular and percieved as partisan, so cancelled

I want to apologize to those who can handle respectful discourse on highly charged topics, and miss this part of ES. I am in your camp.
We will re-evaluate this idea when the zeitgeist is far less fighty, but not before that.
Rest in pepperoni, but then again, you've been very flexible with all of us, even with no rule relaxation.

Thank you so much for all you do here and for including our feedback. This is the best forum in the world thanks to the mods and all of their hard work!

I wanna talk about soldering and mosfets, not freakin' politics on a site like this.
Volts, let's talk about volts. 108 vs. 84, which is your preference?
Next up: Amperes.

I need to go get a soldering gun, because for some reason, the tip of mine is FUBAR.
Any suggestions?

This is a global community, so American politics would seem out of place in most threads. I'd be happy enough to have a few threads with american politics in the biker bar, if the moderators here can handle it!
