My econo-e-bike

Looks like I have a forced 6 week break from my ebike. Just got back from the ER after crashing on the trail. Passing by some teens on their 29ers (they saw me, and made room and said pass on the left), when one does a wheelie and veered into me when I passed by. Broken collar bone and a knee the size of a softball. Ugh. 6 weeks in a sling; hopefully not more, since I’m old lol. Feeling my hip too now that I’m home.

I hope I can do some left handed wrenching in a few weeks to get my bike fixed. I rode home on throttle, even with my handlebar bent 90 degrees (which helped me reach the throttle, with my shoulder so messed up), and my derailleur hanging by the chain.

Lucky my body was still in shock, since it started wearing off and pain setting in After I got home.
I’ll need some Chalo advice, since I’m worried that I won’t be able to find a derailleur hanger for my old frame.
Sorry to hear that! Hope you can take some time to heal up

Dang bro i'm sorry to hear it!
Best wishes with the recovery.. PT as early as possible is a good idea.

Thanks. First broken bone ever. I thought I might make it through life without one. Right now my knee and shoulder are taking turns hurting more. Waiting for the pharmacy to fill my pain med prescription.

Ugh! I encounter a fair bit of foolishness on the bike trails in my area. Last worst one was an oncoming pedicab barreling around a blind curve. As if it wasn't enough that the pedicab was taking up most of the width of the narrow trail section itself, he was decidedly occupying ALL of the "oncoming side" of the trail. Send me off into the weeds to avoid a headon collision. He continued on his pace as if nothing had happened.

Aside from managing your pain, try to aggressively manage the swelling. At least it's still summer, hot season, so the icing should not be as unpleasant.

I feel your pain, literally everyday, from my attempts at flying after a bike launch. I broke my right collarbone, about a couple inches in from the shoulder. That never healed, but keeping it in the sling for five weeks and not flexing the elbow caused the elbow to freeze up. That required physical therapy. So my advice is to flex your elbow from time to time.

Your derailleur hanger should be an easy repair. I have used these guys a few times: Home .

Thanks. I'm keeping the ice on my knee and its about 1/2 as swollen but still a third bigger than my other knee.

Thanks for the tips. I dislocated the same shoulder about 28 years ago, so got used to wearing a sling, but forgot about the elbow until you mentioned it. Not looking forward to the physical therapy. My break is in the same spot. I saw a couple of pieces on the xray.

I've had 2 bone breaks, 3 rounds of physical therapy, and have studied orthopedics and biology on my own for 15 years.

My recommendation is to take the physical therapy seriously, start it as soon as possible & actually continue to do it after the regimen.
Bicycling will be therapeutic for the knee, but the force has to be very low and very slowly increase..
..motion is a trigger to the body to repair cartilage.. you want to exploit that during the recovery process.

Two days later and all of the other minor injuries are showing up. Bruises all over my other leg, knee, hip and arms, and somehow my face must have taken a hit, since i have a few scratches on my lip and cheek. In general my whole body is aching now. Sucks being old. Knee swelling is down though, and I figured out how to sleep propped up, so got a little rest last night.

Get well soon, man!

Have the parties involved filled the pain meds yet? In my case(s), at 70 and with no broken bone injuries yet, I usually get by pretty well either with the standard Acetaminophen and codeine cocktail or Percoset.

For some, the above clog up the intestinal tract and/or knocks them out. I'm just lucky I guess, and function/recover just dandy.

Unfortunately, my primary physician subscribes to X amount, and the insurance company says no, and then there's some back-and-forth about a lesser amount.

I got 6 vicodin pills for 3 days, so I'll try to see my doc tomorrow. Ice on my knee seems to work better. I used to hate icing, but the pain from cold is offset by how much its reducing the knee pain. Collar bone is only hurting if I move wrong right now.

My wife has some Percoset around, but I don't think I'll need that, although it probably would have been good on Friday. I have a lot of things to get done before the rainy season, so this timing sucks for a lot of reasons.

Ya, insurance sucks to deal with. One positive on the ER visit was when the clerk said no copay or additional charges, with medicare plus my insurance.

Healing gets tough as you get older. Hope you have a speedy and relatively pain free recovery.
I would recommend Single Malt Scotch.

Man, sorry to hear you got stove up. I'm still a pretty fast healer, but definitely not as good as I used to be at bouncing back from injury.

I lean pretty hard on vitamin C when I'm bruised, a couple of grams a couple of times a day. It seems to speed recovery and return to normal coloration, and to (slightly) diminish the feeling of soreness and fatigue.

I’ll need some Chalo advice, since I’m worried that I won’t be able to find a derailleur hanger for my old frame.

When I'm not sure where to find a specific hanger, derailleurhanger.com is my first stop. They have an easy search tool, and the example photos are good enough that I can usually find a match from a related model even if the exact one I'm looking for isn't named.

E-HP, sorry to know about your accident, hope you have a fast recovery.

As others mentioned above don't skip on physiotherapy.

I had a shoulder surgery done after a few dislocations, physiotherapy was a torture, but it was required to regain full range of motion, now it is stronger than the otger shoulder.

Sorry to hear about the accident. It’s a shame that it was caused by carelessness of others. A bit of a wake up call to see peoples stories of injuries. It sounds like trails and other riders are a big factor in the stories above. Things that I don’t come across thankfully

Well this Friday will mark 5 weeks since my crash. The orthopedic surgeon said 85% chance of healing after looking at the X-rays, and my follow up is next week. The collar bone only felt sore occasionally so hopefully has been healing, otherwise it’s surgery. My leg however has been in a fair amount of pain. All the other bruises and swelling showed up around my body a few days later, and although my knee hurt like hell and was 3 times its size, the entire back of my leg, from top to my heal was purple and black and swollen. My foot finally fit into my shoe last week, and swelling, except the knee has gone away as of yesterday. Foot pain is still there, so not sure if some tissue died or was damaged. Weird. The black was scary and didn’t lighten up to a really dark purple until after a week or so. My right knee is only about 1/3 bigger than my other knee now 👍

Thinking back, I really don’t recall how I sustained the injuries besides my knee and collar bone. Based on a quick look at my bike, I need a new helmet, bars, new brakes and sensors, derailleur hanger, grips, and throttle. The doc said at least 3 months before I’m riding <sigh>, so I’ll have a lot of time, and maybe do some of my back burner upgrades. I’m missing our Indian summer, and the best weather for riding, especially those evening/sunset rides. 😧

Must have smacked down hard enough to burst a blood vessel.
That makes sense. The bruising did sort of radiate up and down from the back of my knee, but no real signs of trauma that would cause my whole leg and foot to swell up and bruise like it did. I hope the doc gives me a thumbs up next week so I can start rehabbing my arm and shoulder.

Some people are swellers!

Other than swell central, glad to hear you have all your bones in OEM configuration!
For me, my big upright spill caused very little swelling but tons of cartilage damage..

How are your knees moving?

Thanks. Finally moving almost pain free. It was a little unstable laterally for a couple weeks, which was concerning, but now feels solid when climbing my stairs. The big scab is now down to a very thick one the size of a nickel, so not constricting my movement like before.
