Salsa Blackborow with Grin Max45

Just got word from Justin that they are upgrading the axles on the max45 to a solid ring instead of the cutouts.

I am super happy about this.
I wonder if they will redesign the torque arm while they're at it.

They gonna send you one for some "testing"? ;D
I asked Justin if i could exchange this motor with the new design and never got a response. My thinking is the new design will resolve this problem but there is not a chance i am going to spend another 1000 to find out.

In the last month i have only used the bike once for around 10 miles and now have a bad hall sensor. Has anyone ran into this problem with the all axle motors? I have had over 10 different hub motors over the years and never had a hall sensor go bad on me before.

Is the bad hall sensor intermittent? i hope not
It started with low speed jitters and after awhile it made some loud screeching noises and faulted the controller. Power cycle got me moving again for a short time.

Yeah this happened to me on the regular all axle, and on a few different controllers, including a early phaserunner, i randomly got WOT & in this condition, the ebrake wouldn't work!

Your ASI might react the same way.

I ended up running the motor sensorless on a VESC with some tune designed to bring back the lost low end torque you get from sensorless.
Coincidentally this is a really good tune for if you have a weak axle interface.

I think this could be eligible for warranty.

That sounds more like a connection or wiring fault htan a failed part (unless the leg broke off the sensor body, in whcih case it's both).

Halls, whne htey do fail, usually outright die (from overheating or from electrical damage (to-phase shorts, etc)).

I physically inspected my all axle with this problem and found no construction issues.
Strangely enough, the motor has no problems when being ran with the wheels in the air and upside down, it's only when there is a load and the bike is on the ground, do we get a problem.

I finally got a message last night confirming they are willing to swap me out with the new axle design once they are ready. So while i wait i will see if i can find the exact problem and post the results.

I know I'm late to the party joining in the thread in 2026 but did you ever get a replacement motor with updated design and has that resolved the issues you have?

I was told weeks ago the motors with the new axle design were ready to go. I pulled my motor to send back and now I have to wait the super long process for someone to get time to respond back to me.
