This guy took LTC6802+Luminary Micro+LCD+contactors.
Full design documents listed as well- pretty cool :)

"Design flaws in some current lithium-ion systems can be overcome with some additional hardware and the right microprocessor solution. In this creative project, an LM3S9B96 microcontroller is used to implement a battery management controller (BCU) with a safety-certified RTOS with compact and efficient battery monitoring, data reporting, and circuit protection, all in a self-contained battery module assembly."
 
Ironic that he used the LTC part in the TI design contest. That explains why he only got an honorable mention :lol:
 
I think you are correct there, Troy- for such an involved project they could've given a better prize if not for that :)
