Back in the Saddle: Going to California: 2011

It's not even the windy season yet ;) Please do not even consider Bear Camp Road out of Gold Beach to head east over the hill. Terrible road conditions rock strewn unmanaged potholes and more. It would be the worst road you could ever take and steeper than anything else you would consider. If...

My First Build is a Success!

Front disc brake wheels also have dish to compensate for the rotor, which is inherently weaker than a standard symmetrical front hub. The other interesting thought is the extra force applied to the j bend of the spokes at the disc brake hub during braking. This too can cause earlier spoke...

(iZip Zuma) vs (Pedego Cruiser) vs (Prodeco Phantom X)

I was hoping to get Tuxman to tell us if his bike shakes, this is his thread after all. This bike starts to shake at about 7-8mph I am 220 LBS I didn't buy the bike for myself, we got it for my wife and daughter who are both well within the weight limits soaking wet and carrying bricks on...

(iZip Zuma) vs (Pedego Cruiser) vs (Prodeco Phantom X)

Thanks Georgefromvt, Yes this is correct. I was told that the 2011 frame was sturdier, I knew about the 2010 problem, but as you can see, this 2011 frame still shakes. Does anyone who owns a mens frame on this forum have this problem?

(iZip Zuma) vs (Pedego Cruiser) vs (Prodeco Phantom X)

A good thought Tuxman, I didn't mention it, but I did need to use different spacers to adjust for fork steerer tube lengths. The headset is in good condition, seated properly, and I also inspected them carefully. The fork crown race is also in good condition and the headset was adjusted and...

(iZip Zuma) vs (Pedego Cruiser) vs (Prodeco Phantom X)

I would agree, don't leave the bolts loose please! The factors that I think play the biggest part in the brake squeal this bike has are; 1. Soft frame and fork material allowing for resonance to be magnified. 2. Resonance from poorly aligned mount. 3. Factory contaminated pads and/or rotor...

(iZip Zuma) vs (Pedego Cruiser) vs (Prodeco Phantom X)

Thanks Racer_X, I did check the spokes, and tensioned and trued these wheels. Loose spokes are also suspect of consideration with squealing brakes which this bike also had. I ended up buying Avid Mechanical brakes for it because they can align better than the stock Tektro Novella. Yes the bike...

Well after a few more miles, I got a bit bothered by the annoying shake this bike has. I'm not sure I could recommend this to anyone at this point, but maybe the men's frame is more stable. This picture is actually a click away from the video I took of the uncontrollable shake that occurs when...

Back in the Saddle: Going to California: 2011

Glad to see you are still rolling! I used to live in Brookings OR and you will be passing through there on your way to Gold Beach or Port Orford. We have to always mention that Port Orford doesn't have a boat dock, they use a crane to get the boats in and out of the water. The wind blows pretty...

If your tendon is sore kind of on the outside back of the knee, you are probably hyper extending. Lower your seat a little. It takes a while to heal from this kind of injury, but you should notice a difference relatively quickly. I hope this helps!

Gary Fisher gonna regulate yo asses LOL!

What about this situation, where neither speed nor power are the issue at all, only ignorance is the issue here. In this case a temporary exception was granted, but what would be outcome for someone else? What percentage of disabled qualifies for an exception? There is a whole "can of worms"...

Gary Fisher gonna regulate yo asses LOL!

This bike in the video is supposedly "legal". Does the rider appear to be responsible and courteous? Now what if this guy had a bike that did 40 mph? Well he probably wouldn't be in the bike lanes at all and right out in traffic (maybe not I saw him pass a moped riding courteously on the...

Gary Fisher gonna regulate yo asses LOL!

It seems easy to vilify someone when you don't understand what they are doing and saying. This thread turns to some kind of hate spewing tripe based on faulty information, to the point of calling him a Nazi???? The LAW currently states 20 MPH as the definition of an electric assist...

Thanks for posting all this KF! I can't help but armchair engineer along with you as you go, and I just wanted to mention a couple of things that "seem" like it might help. Mounting Hookworms... when you wrap the rim a lot of times with tape or liner, it make the tire harder to mount. Prove...

    Let's talk about brakes

One thing you can do to greatly enhance your rim brakes especially on a lower end suspension fork is to use a simple "brake booster" for about $12-$40. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=bike+brake+booster&_frs=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m359 It helps prevent the brake bosses from spreading when you...

Looks like China is even building our bridges for us now.

Uhhhh, pardon my missing something but... As far as I can tell, most all of the e-bike motors, the concept, the electronics, the bikes they are hung on, are all cheap Chinese items. Almost all of it. Why complain about the Chinese bridge in California from the seat of a Chinese e-bike? No...

    AWESOME pedals!!

Don't "trust me"... Data, cold hard facts data... trumps subjective feelings when it comes to synergistic components. The field of bicycle fit and ergonomics is studied by the worlds top professionals, not some Jonnny Idea in his garage. Bucket loads of research and cash to scratch out the last...

Pedal only bike recommendations for 200 mile trip

Road bike with drop bars, or mustache bars. Really important because you will want to change hand positions frequently. Then you really want a pair of padded gloves that fit perfectly and don't have too much padding. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/deakins/handlebars.html Seat or Saddle. This is...

Which of these e-bikes is the best for me?

I searched Vermont Craigslist for "electric" in the bikes section on CL. I don't know a thing about Vermont or these dealers but the first one installs Hilltopper kits (may help you install a kit of your choice), and the second one sells Pedego (certainly worth a test ride). LITTLE CITY CYCLES...

Which of these e-bikes is the best for me?

What I heard was 2 miles of dirt, the rest pavement. 1 of the 2 miles of dirt is 1% rising to 7% grade. You want to pedal. The bike is for recreation and errands 12 miles average and leading to 30 miles on occasion. I assume you prefer low maintenance. I assume you will get the bug and end up...

Which of these e-bikes is the best for me?

I had been trying to find out more detailed spec on the Urban Movers by Ultra Motor. I just found out that it appears the reason I couldn't find good detailed information either is that the info I had that made me think "Ultra Motor" was from where I got my iZip Via Urbano, here is Cowbooms...

Which of these e-bikes is the best for me?

A good geared motor is lighter, has more torque for climbing hills, uses less power to perform the same job, is physically smaller, and doesn't have any drag when not in use. Smaller motors also = smaller batteries = lighter total bike weight. Freewheeling geared motors pedal great, and don't...

Which of these e-bikes is the best for me?

Lou, I was mistaken about the battery placement on the Trek, I had the frame mount from BionX kits mixed up with what Trek ended up doing on the FX. Actually I would say don't get a bike with a battery over the rear wheel. You want the battery between the axles of the front and rear wheels...
