Gazelle Impulse motor/battery issues

Has anybody had any luck getting the Impulse motor/controller to power up using an alternative battery or power source? I am helping out a friend who has a battery with a dead bms, there's 3 connections to the bike so I'm guessing its pos, neg and a signal of some form (canbus?)
