Had a simular incident when I was young coming down mountain a scrambler was behind me the sheep got scarred running fast as it could and side swiped me I rid it down banking felt like I broke my arm but got myself home and few days soon felt like I'd live.

Not to mention that he didn't even recommend full face protection when the majority of cycling "head injuries" are injuries to the face...and that goes back to when helmets weren't common, so it's not a case of helmets commonly saving the skull but not the face, though it may be the case here since the crash was serious enough to break his neck as well as smash his face.

Hit a Crocodile
26 years ago, in Cairns, Australia I overstayed my visa, got caught by immigration, escaped and went on the run.
Having spotted a police car I began avoiding the police by taking a route through a swamp on my XL500, but I met a croc, or at least something that saw a bloke on a motorbike and came toward it through the rushes.
In an Instant of absolute clarity, things went from a fun crazy adventure with no consequences (deportation was a given) to the realisation something was about to eat me.
Hauling the front wheel out of the goo, I gunned the motor and got away from the first patch of thrashing rushes and 20 metres away I ran over a second croc. The front wheel went over it and the back wheel didn't. Bike fell sideways, I trod on the second croc staying upright on the bike. The croc scooted out from under my foot, nearly sending me into the mud.
Escaped the swamp and ran into a police drink drive check, I hadn't been drinking and they let me go, despite the out of date bike rego & no licence/ID etc. Trying to act calm and normal at that point - 3AM covered in mud was a challenge, who knows what they thought, nice chaps though
Love Australia but it's like jurassic park, even the giant chickens (Cassowaries) will kill you.

This almost happened to me just after dusk one night, in a non-rural area where that young deer should not have been. I was going about 25mph late to get home, when from the high school a deer was suddenly on an intercept course, and cut me off right as a jammed on the brakes (thank goodness).
