How does this lipo set-up looks ?

Hi everyone


I have just purchased 2x 6s8000mah lipo, and are going for a 44v 8amp setup for my mac 7T.

But since I´m a total noob on Lipo´s I would really appreciate you opinions :D

To my batteries i was thinking of buying this:

For when putting the lipos in series and connecting it to the controller, the controller is the 12 fet Infineon, i dont know which connection it uses, but then that is the only thing I need to change/solder manually? The controller is coming in the same bag as the lipos so the length os the harnes should`t be a problem?

I would recommend getting a set of lvc/hvc boards from Methods, or better yet the lipo protection kit. It's about as safe as you can get with lipo IMHO.
 
You put the batteries in series by breaking the connectors apart and plugging the black of one into the red of the other. That's it. Nothing else needed. The 200W charger will work fine. Undo the series connection and charge the 2 bricks in parallel. Get a parallel charge cable, and a 6s parallel balance cable to do that, or a parallel charge board. The 200W charger should charge both those in ~2 hours from empty.
 
I run a 12S 8P LiPo battery pack (44.4v 40Ah) setup too on my Mongoose Blackcomb.
You can consider doing a 1-plug charging setup, charging all 12 cells in series using a Hyperion 1420i charger/balancer like I did here...

The Hyperion 1420i charger/balancer costs more (of course) but it can charge up to 14s packs so no need to reconfig your battery leads to parallel every time youcharge / then reconfig back to series to discharge.

For the time beeing I´m not so wealthy(splled correctly?). Otherwise this could be a good idea perhaps in, the future.

HI sacman, thanks for the respons, But, my tech skills are very poor, I need something more simple, I can see that it is very simple when done, But its the part on your link where I need to change som wires/plus that concerns me... but thanks.

wesnewell, I liked your idea because it sounded very simple. But I´m not sure I get it. I have two bricks, lets call them no. 1 and 2, are you saying that I should take the black wire from no1 of them and put it in to no.2 red wire? what about the red on the no.1, should it just be placed nowhere, and only be in use when charging?

I think i have the charging part under control, but which plugs do zippy lipo´s use, EC5/EC3 or XT60?

would love it if hobbyking has some of the plugs that your talking about so i dont need to solder..

and an extra question, which plus does the infineon 12 use? I guess its eaier to change it to whatever I use at the end of my lipo pack?

To run the bike, at 44v, series connect the two batteries. Plug the black wire from pack one into the red wire from pack two. Now you have one red and one black connector left. Those plug into the controller. forget the series connector, it's not needed. All you need is to put some bullet connectors on your controller, with the polarity correct.

You will have to take the series connection apart to charge. Do not try to charge at 12s unless you have a 12s charger.

You can paralell the packs and charge them both at the same time, using a 6s charger setting. That's what the paralell board is for. Never forget to unplug that series connection before plugging into the paralell board. If you do that it will short, ruing the board and perhaps the packs themselves.

Or charge one pack, then charge the second later.

The monitors should work fine. you need two, since you have two packs. Or at the very least, you need a voltmeter readout of some kind for the whole pack. When it drops to 44v not under load, yer done.

The charger looks ok ish. 200w charger on a 350 watt power supply should work. But chargers and power supplies from HK are notoriously unpredictable. Maybe they work, maybe not. Problem is, returning them if not. You might try to source your charger and power supply in country. In the USA, EP Buddy is a good charger place with a good CS reputation. Little more pricy, but priceless if your power supply smokes the minuite you plug it in.

200w charging will be plenty fast, should top up both packs in an hour or less. Balancing takes more time. Should only need to balance every 10-30 cycles.

Now im finally done ordering, now I just have to wait for mac-kit from cellmanm china, charger+powersupply+bulletconectors+wires from HKchina, Lipo from HKgermany, torque arms from doctorbass in US to arrive.. Feeling like quite the globetrotter... :wink:

I can see that all is very simple when only dealing with 2 bricks, and if i want to upgrade I can just double the 8 amps to 16 with same equipment more or less.

Yes. you just paralell the batteries to get 16 ah size. Again, as many methods as there are people, but the common one is some y connectors for both the bullets and the jst's.

How much distance do you reckin theres is in the 8 amps?

I now it depends very much about the speed, im about 140 pounds in there are no hills, and its on a mac 7t??
 
You can use the simulator on ebikes.ca to get an idea of your range with no pedaling. Even light pedaling will greatly extend your range.

Since you don't want to fully discharge the pack and there is some question about how many amp hours are in those 8ah pack. You should plan conservativly for 5ah of battery which (for me) with moderate pedaling on moderate terrain should last about 10 miles or so.

You really need a watt meter like the Cycle analyst.

'sorry to nit-pick but please use Ah describing battery pack capacity. Saying "amps" when you mean Ah is very misleading, confusing and screams noob'ism.
 
At most 10 miles from 8 ah of 12s, 44v lipo. Range you can pedal without using the motor is of course infinte. I'm refering to WOT riding, up and down some hills, no big tailwinds, little to no pedaling.

In practice, you might want to consider less, so you don't discharge the pack down to where it gets more unbalanced, and costs you clycles. I like to say stop by 3.65v per cell.

Just ordered 2x 8Ah bricks more. Even thoug I will be pedalling a lot it would really suck ass to run out of Ah´s 10 miles from home in stormy frontal wind.

Looking farward to see how the 7T performs, can´t really find any reviews from a mac owner who has those turns, but i guess its a just a mix from the 6t and 8t. No matter what it will definetly be a huge step up from my current power limited 36v 250w front wheel assist- :mrgreen:

I too run 12 series 8 AMP HR LIPO on my bike, I get 15 miles from my 8 AH pack - full throttle.
I think you should get a watt meter by Hobby king or a cycle analyst- they really help you learn about your batteries and you will not be a Noob after using them for a while, That charger is excellent as well, I have one,
bought almost two years ago charges up quickly.

At first I did order the 6T from cell_man, but he only had the 7T on stock for now, so I went for that, It is the upgraded version with bigger phase wires and a temperature sensor fitted, along with the 12 fet infineon.

Does anyone knows how the temperature sensor works, do I need a/the Cycle Analyst to use the sensor?

Now that I have 4x8000mah lipos wouldnt it be the easiest to always have them in 2xparallels both when charging and discharging, that way they are easy to charge and when putting them to the controller I can just connect them in a series harnet?
I`m going to use only 4mm bullets, so the series and parallel harness would be these:
