do the seals on the axle keep the water out of the hub? even the phase wires would be shorting through the fluid on top of the hydraulic pressure inside associated with the water trapped in between the hub and the stator as well as the covers. so even if it was sensorless and they could seal the phase wires it is still an accomplishment.
 
Pure water doesn't conduct.

Impure water only conducts as much as it has free ions to conduct.

Any brushless will run fine underwater. The water's tiny bit of resistance is nothing to the motor compared to the fluid drag.

Not only brushless either Luke... brushed motors also run fine underwater IIRC i read the rc car guyz used to break their motor in underwater when the brushed motors were all the go years ago...
