Dude, your thread title sounds like a video game. Like a really KEWL video game. Like, GAME OF THE YEAR!
Did you know the U.S. founded the Liberian colony as a place to send exslaves? At about the same time as the English founded Sierra Leone for the same purpose. In the 1830's, at the time that the U.S. government was trying to PREVENT the freeing of so many southern slaves by owners who couldn't afford to own them in the 'Panic of 1837' and there was no buyer, they could have had what huge number for FREE to send to the fledgling colony. Except it would cost a few dollars each (Like a weeks' pay for a poorer person at the time) to transport them to a place that's going to need some amount of support for a little while. As compared to spending $6 billion on a war that was NOT over slavery, but had that as an aggravating factor in so many problems and maybe, just that one thing removed 20 years before the fighting started in Kansas 4 years before secession. . . .
Such is the foundation of the ongoing problems in both Liberia and Sierra Leone. The fecklessness of starting it but not committing to sending them ALL. Even after 37 black Republican exslaves had served in the House of Representatives those are then the people most needed in Liberia. Whether they wanted to go or not. But they would have run the place, wouldn't they?
Your warlord probably wouldn't have been a warlord in a place where more of the exslaves fit to lead were there to pick a FATHER OF HIS COUNTRY from more than a century earlier. One good candidate would have been the sailor in the Confederate navy who led other black Confederate sailors to steal a ship and surrender it to the Union blockade, even collecting his family and friends along the way, think of what he could have meant to them in Liberia if, early in his political career after the war, he'd headed to Liberia with his war record (In BOTH navies) and his early government experience. Especially since he was somewhat well to do. (After the war, he spent the reward the North gave him for stealing the ship to buy the house of his former owner.) Or at the very least there'd have been some hope he'd have been a GOOD warlord.
So obviously my storyline for the game would be pure fiction. It's more fun that way. But still some amount of what might have been. . . .
