this is about the all-cell battery and how it supposedly will prevent thermal runaway. which has never been proven.

http://evbud.com/news/244/

the author talks about how thermal runaway is caused by the oxidation of the electrolyte which is not correct. thermal runaway begins with the breaking of the SEI layer to expose fresh carbon underneath that the electrolyte reacts with to produce more heat in an exothermic reaction. so that statement is a total lie but what everyone believes because they do not know any more than this guy.

then he talks about molten metal at 1000o C from the heat of the fire. but there is no metal inside the pouches or can, just the aluminum and copper electrodes which all melt at lower temps. but in most cases do not melt because the fire never reaches that temperature.

then the pictures for the article are misleading. deliberate misinformation. the tesla fire in seattle was caused by a metal piece on the freeway piercing the battery compartment and shorting out the battery. it was a short that caused the fire and not thermal runaway. the fire in the boeing 787 airliner was caused by a short and not because of thermal runaway. even though both batteries did experience thermal runaway after the battery was shorted. it was not the cause.

References ??
What are you saying ? ... its only thermal runaway if its completely spontaneous and not caused by any other factors ?
About that short in the Boeing pack.... The only "explanation" ( report findings) i recall were comments that the cells "possibly" experienced an internal failure as a result of some potential contamination during manufacture ? ...however no solid evidence for the theory was shown !

My understanding of the allcell goop was that it merely helped inner cells not get a ton hotter than the outside edge cells in the pack. Hoping it would make the cells last a few more cycles.

I never believed it could actually stop a thermal runaway, if one should happen. Might slow it down some perhaps, buying you some time to heave that thing out the door if you aren't asleep a the time.

the prismatic cell in the boeing 787 had a short in #6 cell from metal fibers left over from the initial production that shorted out the electrodes. the short led to the thermal runaway.

my point was that the author of the article did not even understand the process which is thermal runaway. it is not the electrolyte which is oxidized that causes thermal runaway. it is the oxidation of the carbon on the electrode that causes the SEI to spall off of the elctrode and expose more bare unreacted carbon to the electrolyte and the lithium perflourate. this reaction uses the electrolyte to oxidize the carbon, not the other way around.

so when people who should be authoritative and understand this stuff because they write the articles, and people consider them authorities, make inaccurate statements about the cause of thermal runaway it makes it impossible to have a coherent body of information about how thermal runaway is promoted or activated in the cell.
