I've seen a lot of people talking about pneumatic wheels on their skateboards, and people making their own 6" wheels, but I wondered if anybody had considered just putting MTB wheels on a longboard deck?
All you'd need is a clever little adaptor to change from 8mm skate axle to 10mm MTB axle (I think that's right!).
Some nice Primo lightweight MTB hubs are £10 a go, tyres about the same, and off you go! This would give you the benefit of having 1 board that was very easy to change between a streetboard and a fairly rugged mountainboard.
I thought I had found some adaptors, but Surf Rodz don't make them anymore. Kind of like this:

Or something like this (but this converts 10mm to 8mm):
