I remember when I worked at the airport (normal jet aircraft) and they did a very similar procedure to their Nicad batteries. Shorting the cells always seemed scary.
Problem is how often would you have to do this reconditioning? I'd say if there old, you're probably doing it all the time which would make you go crazy. I've tried the dead short thing, trickle charging and the nicads were toast after that. Maybe low grade nicads don't like this.
