As an AMA motocross pro/am mech, I would help my rider by coaching his technique when on the course. Body position is quite important on 2 wheels.
As a gymnastics fan, we have names for elements performed

So what names are associated w/ what positions?

Tuck= best aerodynamic position
Standing= max cooling, lol 8) , little unstable but convenient for transition.
Sitting (str8arm?)= resting pos
NOHANDS= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN8gsLWENzU (this guy lives 5mi from me  )

So having to keep my big @$$ of the seat alot, I ride w/ a stiff leg (semi standing) and the opposing side of my pelvis to the outside of the seat. What would this position be called?
Any other position name suggestions besides missionary?

Sorry not to agree, standing is the most stable position, and the only position that let you have complete control of the bike's balance. Just try how long you can keep balance on your stopped bike when seated. Wonder why trial bikes have no seat ?

As a DH rider, and long time dirt rider of many bikes and motorcycles, I can tell that standing saved my life many time in critical balance situations, and also did on the street a few times.

That said, my favourite position is sitting straight, riding downhill no hands. The posture of horse riding, with ankle, hip and head align on a straight vertical line. Yet, I'm always ready to stand and grab the handlebar. 8)

Well for some reason I can't get the utube display to work, but this lady is on a higher level: http://youtu.be/rWYemEeLTTE
And who knew, "you ride like a couple of girls" could be taken as a complement: http://youtu.be/fhmIDBiI3os

Good to see that somebody knows how to ride a bike without a motor anyway. Thanks for the thoughts although I am a bit to old to try that yet. ;^)

Haven't posted in a while, so figured some contribution was in order.

Started getting complacent about riding position by dropping my heel off the back of the peddle. Having large calves the stretching felt good. Started getting this pain, just in front of the heel yet not in the arch of the sole. Asked a friend their perspective and it turns out my riding position was causing the problem. The Achilles tendon was pulling around the heel, causing extreme stress to the weaker attachment approaching the sole/arch.

So keep this in mind fellas. Don't over stress your foot ligaments with bad riding positions of temporary comfort.

Not at all, this is how we learn without having to suffer the consequences first hand. And while my logic at the time escapes me, your assessment is valid.
Standing certainly allows more versatility in body/bike position. Must have thought a higher center of gravity was a negative, yet like balancing a baseball bat in the palm of your hand, the paradox is in the practice. Thank you for the disagreement, I stand corrected.

Anyone else have a potential riding position practice that's caused problems?
