I'm feeling productive today but I work 10 hour days for the next few days so I'll try to get all the advice I can before I have time to start getting everything together.
My Kona Unit build (recently completed rim/spoke/tire upgrade) has a pretty low gearing (32t chainring and all I had for a while was a 6 speed with the smallest gear being 14t --the maxxis hookworm helps a little with its larger OD, I'm not sure about the crank length)
I bought a 44t chainring with the same BCD as my current chainring (104mm) and I also got a ACS CROSSFIRE 13T---1/8"-3/32" TEETH GUNMETAL BMX BICYCLE FREEWHEEL. A 3/32 chain is also in the mail. My question is if these components are compatible. The chainring says its 3/32 compatible as well as the freewheel. Last time at a local bike nonprofit workshop I tried to install a 12t freewheel from ebay with my current chainring. The chain wouldn't sit correctly on the last few cogs of the freewheel - I'm assuming that that freewheel was a BMX freewheel and thus has different spacing between the cogs(?) On my other bike I have an identical freewheel bought from Kayne motorsports but it works OK with a chain tensioner (no sliding dropouts). Does it only work because of the chain tensioner? If I peddle super hard on the bike with the chain tensioner it seems it slip and click before it catches, is this because of the same cog distance problem I have on the other bike?
The chain on the kona was perfectly aligned with a the 12t that seems to stick out away from the hub a little more than the newer, flatter 13t freewheel. So I will Have to get freewheel spacers? How Many is acceptable?
I'd like to hear any thoughts, thanks.
