I would like to thank gwhy for his guidance, it was indeed an excellent choice I realize now after hours of study...
Also Lebowski who confirmed it, and cleverly pointed out that a clutch would alleviate my concerns regarding ride-ability.
My next worry is speed control. I've read the esc's don't like running on light loads, I'm thinking a lot of my riding will be part throttle. Will it be a problem?
Would this be sufficient? I've read about voltage spikes and various other horrors, would anything need to be modified to ensure reliability?

Or should I buy something else?

Before you decide how you are doing to control it you really need to decide what voltage you are going to run and what power, if going for 48v then the CC will do the job , but please read all the threads on how to get the best out of a CC and about all the potential problems ( if going though the CF clutch should work ok ) . The kelly will also do the job at 48v but you will need to retro fit position sensors on the motor and you will have to also get the high speed option for the kelly. A much cheaper option to the kelly would be either a modded ( 3077 fets more than enough for the 3kw motor) 12fet controller from lyen (forum member) or get a 12 fet from this guy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/48V-600W-brushless-controller-for-E-bike-scooter-/300352534034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45ee67f612 ( and reprogram to run 1kw'sh ) , with either of these controllers you will have to fit postion sensors to the motor. If you go down the 24v route I would go for this rc esc controller ( to play with ) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SkyWing-200A-brushless-ESC-Speed-Controller-with-5A-BEC-for-RC-aircraft-motor-/230891817172?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item35c23988d4 , if you are running though a CF clutch then no mods will need to be done and it will pull away from a standstill , if not running through a CF clutch then you may need to get upto around 2-3mph before you can apply the power ( this may still apply if you go down the CC esc route). If you want to be able to use it at a legal power level then you will need to use a controller that the current limit can be set i.e the kelly of the 12fet , if you go down the rc esc route then you will need to add additional electronics to be able to limit the power.
