Hey guys, I've just recently finished my second bamboo bike. This one is the world's first "fat bike" made of bamboo - like a Surly Pugsley if you're familiar with snow / sand biking.

Check it: http://dillerdesign.com/random/bike/fat_bamboo_v1/beauty_and_the_beast.jpg

Here's a very terse build log: http://dillerdesign.com/random/bike/fat_bamboo_v1/fat_bamboo_terse_build_log.jpg

You can bet your ass that I'm going to make a bamboo e-bike frame with super duty clamp dropouts! I really got pissed at my e-bike's torque arms when trying to change a flat. NEVER AGAIN.

This is actually a wooden prototype to test fitment before welding together a cro-moly steel frame, however, the builder noted the wooden mock-up rode just fine. If he had fiberglassed over the wooden frame it would have been very strong as is. There is a thread about shaping a stiff foam core, applying carbon-fiber over it, and abandoning the foam core inside, which works well. Some carbon-fiber frames have the foam core dissolved out with a solvent to lighten it a few ounces, but the foam is not very heavy to just leave in. Bamboo in this shape with composite over the joints would be very strong.

Bamboo is everywhere down here. Looks like a good setup on that Bamboo build. I like it.

Lock,

Thanks for starting this thread.

Meant to post this for a while, so here it goes:

Its about a bamboo fixie that an industrial designer built - he rides it pretty much every day rain, hail or shine and is a very fit rider, especially for his age.
The first one was was hit by a car..v1.jpg
..he repaired the rear stays..View attachment 1
..and has recently completed a new one experimenting with profilesv2.jpg
Enjoy

No worries, mate! I'm just glad I'm not the only one who likes the wood and bamboo...

Edit: part of my interest in starting the wooden bike thread and also the DIY carbon-fiber/composite thread, is my desire to collect ideas from the vast pool of expertise here in order to be able to make frames at home without a welder/brazing-kit, and also show others how to make frames. Anyone can easy and cheaply get a couple of steel/aluminum frames from used bikes in order to acquire the BB and head-tubes, etc.

The two things I want in an electric bike that are hard to find is a good frame triangle for a battery pack, but with a low enough top-bar that I can stand flat-footed when at a stop (instead of on my toes). The second thing is a frame that is a little longer for more high-speed stability to allow a non-hub motor to be mounted just behind the BB and in front of the rear tire.

FERNANDO PONCE
Argentinian designer Fernando Ponce’s all-electric trike is a wonderful vehicle with green features.

The beauty and charm of the tricycle lie in the wooden frame, which was carefully crafted and fitted to make the trike more appealing. Taking basic design cues from classic tricycles, Fernando Ponce has integrated his all-electric trike with the necessary components and features of a trike, making it both useful and stylish.

The trike features batteries placed between the wooden frames and derives power from a hub motor placed in the front wheel, enabling the tricycle to be controlled with a handle grip. Considering how the environment is often something to take into consideration while using any mode of transportation, this eco tricycle may provide a great alternative for those looking to be more eco-friendly.
